You won’t regret getting DCT. My first DCT was on a CRF1000 and I only bought it because I couldn’t get a manual in the colour I wanted. 300 miles in I loved it after getting to properly understand how it works. My only advice is to ignore your instinct and others views about D mode. The AT engine is built for low down torque and does not rev very high. The result of this is that it pulls like a train from low revs but most of us have come from high reving engines that need to be run higher up the rev range to get the feel and torque we need to perform manoeuvres such as roundabouts. You will find when using D mode just opening the throttle more will provide the torque you are looking for to balance the bike on slower manoeuvres in higher gears. By all means you can use the sport mode to create a safer feeling by running a lower gear, but the only thing you are doing is unnecessarily using more fuel due to the faster turning engine. If you are happy with this then that’s fine but I see a lot of negativity toward D mode through lack of understanding of the engine characteristics and how it produces it’s torque. As a truck driver I am very used to this slow chugging engine and gearbox characteristics so running D mode has not phased me. I understand that it is a little strange to most which is why I like to suggest to anyone about giving D mode more of a chance. Happy riding on your new purchase. PS. A mate had a CRF1000 in manual and in most situations (especially going up hill) he’d be riding two gears lower than me.

Love the nt I’ve got a dct crosstourer and it is amazing I had all the same misconceptions prior to riding it and once I did I doubt I’ll ever go back to a normal manual. Sub 4 mph car park practice is a must though. Figure 8’s and u turns. I ride mine in sport mode 90%of the time and use the paddles for downshifts mainly. I also have the left hand rear brake conversion which changes it again. Great video

I imagine that is no coincidence that the dealers only had the DCT on demo. There is so much tosh written about DCT versions mostly based on what people think it would be like rather than reality but as you discovered keeping an open mind can lead to good surprises. The only thing that concerns me on a touring bike is that they have to cheek to charge extra for a comfort seat! Look forward to seeing your new bike in action.

Fantastic choice of Bike, i have had 2 GS BMW's and 2 triumph Explorers, 3 NC 750's at different times, and this NT1100 ticks all the boxes, bit of everything in the NT. I have the DCT on my X ADV, and after 2 years, its still fussy, in fact its irritating on roundabouts, when i changes gear, half way round when banked over, however i do like it OK ish, but not enough to pay extra for it. its also a complicated piece of kit, that has left a few people (NC700/750 Forum) stopped, when sensors don't play good, possible early versions or winter riders. You will need to get used to keeping your foot on the back break, for manoeuvring control, when in tight situations, (u turns etc ) as its impossible to have any fine control with your throttle, as its either on or off. You can also put it in manual, and mess around with it on the twisty bits, for a bit of F1 style flappy paddle fun, so it is quite involving if you get a bit bored. If i had the choice, i would always take manual, and maybe a quick shifter, Best of Both, in my humble opinion. I suppose after Honda has used it for 10 years or more, on so many models, it has now been tweaked and improved several times. There must be a reason, why only Honda has used it, much like their V4's , as no other manufacturer in the motorcycle industry seems to want, or need it, i don't recall anyone asking for DCT on a motorcycle, before, or since, the DCT was introduced, maybe just an over priced, over complicated Gimmick ?, possibly, just like their V4's. The NT 1100 Could also end up a very underrated bike, like the NC750's, living in the shadow of the higher revving Tracers etc Ill just grab me coat now,

DCT is the best technology put on a motorcycle since ABS. Obviously love mine (XADV). To appreciate DCT you need to assess with a "clean sheet". Making comparisons to a manual can miss the point. I found that ignoring the gear position, ignoring the rpms and just ride. If you want to go faster twist the throttle more. And if you want to go slower back it off. If you simply find circumstances would be better in a different gear than revert momentarily to the paddles. The gear changes are significantly smoother and efficient than is possible with a conventional hand clutch and toe shifter. Other than tight slow speed u-turn type maneuvers I find DCT to be superior in every aspect. I have a quick shifter on my BMW F900XR and to be honest it feels like a gimmick and is practically useless. DCT fits the classic statement "where have you been all my life". 😁 The NT1100? Nice. A possible replacement for my BMW as well,,,,???

Thank you Paul, for the excellent report. I'm in a similar boat to you, in that I'm waiting for a NT1100 test ride (last week's storm put a stop to that) but my dealer's demonstrator is a manual. I've just spent four years on a DCT Africa Twin and a couple of years before that, on a DCT NC750X, so I'm sold on the semi auto gearbox. HOWEVER....my local Yamaha dealer has a brand new Tracer 9 GT I can have now, with a £1000 discount, but of course no DCT. Oh the first world choices we have to make. :) I look forward to seeing how you get on.

Hi Paul, thanks so much for your video. I am in exactly the same position as you, currently have a 2018 RT and have a test ride booked at Honda in Colwyn Bay on the 3rd March. Really pleased you like the NT, I am still sitting on the fence as I feel I'm sacrificing a few things the NT doesn't have, Key less ride, Shaft Driven, central locking, hill start assist etc. I fully understand your feeling about the RT, I have completely given up trying to sync my NAV 6 with my phone and my SENA, you need a degree in IT to even start planning a route with Basecamp! So my attraction to the NT will be the technology and the interface with Apple Car Play as I use this in my car daily and really like this option. I think the few things I am giving up on the RT will be well compensated with the NT features. So thnaks again for your honest opinion and thoughts around the RT, its really helped me swing towards the NT. I am now though worried about delivery/availability. Big trip planned to the French Alps in June so its sounds doubtful the NT will be here by then but I will see what Colwyn Bay say. Cheers.

Don’t make a purchase decision based on the NT’s apple CarPlay. I’ve heard it works well in cars but on the Africa twin it’s a nightmare of a faff. You have to restart it every time you turn off the ignition. I’ve owned my CRF1100 since last July and have resisted installing my old garmin because I have CarPlay. But I have yet to find a nav app that will run preplanned routes through the big touch screen. The most I have been able to achieve is selecting a favourite to navigate to. Maybe there are apps out there that can run preplanned routes through CarPlay but I’m not willing to pay for yet another yearly subscription to find out if it does. Last weekend I finally gave in. A garmin satnav is far better than CarPlay currently is. (And once paid for has no annual subscription). I agree that basecamp is complicated to use but with perseverance it will start to make sense. I’ll try and post a link for you but if I don’t find it look up Crusiemans Garage channel he has excellent instructional videos on basecamp.

@@eMotion_Video_UK Thanks Martin, very interesting to hear your view as likewise I am really struggling to route plan using Carplay. I get Google Maps and this is really useful and easy to plan routes, I can then create the Files from them to upload but you are right, I have yet to find an app that will receive the PDX File and then give you step by step route guidance. There certainly a gap in the Market unless its too complex/not enough demand for this sort of thing. Thanks again

I now want a lighter bike, but one my wife can be comfortable on. I'm originally from Halifax and moved to Canada many years ago, and the NT isn't over here yet. I have my name in the hat at my local dealership for when they arrive, but my reason for commenting is to find out what your wife thought about being on the back. My missus was okay on the FJR, but not the Africa Twin at-all, she's very comfortable on the Goldwing (of course) but it's me that wants to come down in weight. I'm 5'-11" and the missus is 5'-8". Ref the DCT I think you've made the right decision. I bought my DCT Goldwing Tour at about the same time you got your BMW. You will get used to it quite quickly but I found it took me about 3 months to fully understand how to use it to best advantage. A test ride isn't long enough to do that. At first I thought that in some modes it was changing up too quickly but actually I've now realised that most of us leave changing up unnecessarily late when riding at normal road speeds, though I am of course talking about a bike with monstrous amounts of torque at low revs. When I first got it I tended to ride mostly in full manual mode. Even in that mode DCT is better than conventional IMO. Far smoother and more convenient changing with the little up and down paddles than a conventional clutch and foot pedal even with a quick shifter. As I got used to it and became familiar with auto I started to use that more and now I tend to ride about 70% full auto and 30% manual depending on my mood but I've learned that I really can trust the bike in full auto in all 4 modes in all circumstances, though sport mode is a bit wild on anything but open roads. There is actually no need to ride in manual mode at all but I do just for fun sometimes. I have a couple of classic bikes as well. While riding those I sometimes find myself thinking "I wish this thing had DCT". Conversely when riding with DCT I never find myself thinking "I wish this had a coventional box". I hope you manage to get hold of the new bike sooner rather than later. It looks like Honda have really hit the mark with that one. As for me I'm happy with my Wing. The updates so far aren't significant enough for me to trade mine in for a newer one and in the first three years it has been 100% reliable. Not even one little niggly fault since I've had it.

@@eMotion_Video_UK I suggest you try one. The size and weight really aren't as daunting as some people think. I'm only 5'6" and weigh in at 10.5 stone but have no trouble with mine at all. With DCT you get the forward and reverse walking modes so you never have to really manhandle it and push it around and as long as it is on level ground it rolls up on to the centre stand very easily. The low seat height and low centre of gravity make it feel much lighter than it is. It isn't the quickest steering bike in the world but that is as much down to the long wheelbase and geometry as the weight and on the plus side it is incredibly stable once under way and very easy to ride feet up at walking pace. All in all it is much more of a motorcycle than many people believe and actually a pretty good all rounder. I use mine for everything but it won't match your A.T. on the rough stuff :)

@@iannicholson9875 The size and weight I was referring to was the older model, which I didn’t really like the look of either. I’ve had too many Hondas now to realise it was a good bike. It just wasn’t my thing, but on seeing the new one my attitude changed because I started to like the the looks. That’s when I had the light bulb moment and really fancied a go on one with DCT. If I ever win the lottery I’ll definitely book a test ride. Unfortunately my dealership knows I can’t afford one, so is going to be difficult to blag my way onto one. 😆

I own the Africa Twin 2020 ATAS DCT ES. It's very similar, just a bigger front wheel and more of a spongy suspension. Just a few tips, almost everyone that owns this kind of bike as a DCT drives it in sport 2. Nobody uses D for obvious reasons. Think of the DCT as a big scooter, but with a lot more power and style, then you wont be looking for the clutch. You can drive it manually if you really want, but I don't know anyone that owns one that does. The whole idea is to forget clutching and gearing up and down all the time, just sit back and enjoy the ride. I don't consider it "laziness" I consider it avoiding unnecessary work. The jerkiness is normal for anyone that is not used to it, but after some time and a few tweaks on the setup, you can smooth it out quite a bit. Takes a bit of finesse on the throttle. Dont wear thick or oversized gloves with the DCT, you can end up pushing the throttle while reaching for the brake and get unintended acceleration at the most inopportune times. It's quite unsettling when you do. I can pretty much promise the more you ride it, the more you will like it, but I'm not sure how well the NT does on gravel with those smaller wheels and smooth tires. IF you don't do offroad that's fine but there is always those lengthy construction zones or back road gravel that we tend to end up on. The speedometer always reads about 6-9 km/h higher than you are actually going, so if people are passing you that's why. The temp reading also reads higher than it actually is outside usually by 5-8 degrees C. I'm not sure why in England they are selling bikes with MPH on them, that seems a little strange. You are lucky you were able to test ride for so long. Here in Canada they don't give test rides. They pretty much want it paid in full before you can ride it, except in a few rare occasions like a special "ride day event". When I got mine, my "test ride" was driving it home after purchasing it.

I had an AT 1000cc DCT and it was too tall and too heavy for me. I had it four months :( I imagine the 1100 engine is very different. More Sporty and better feel with that 17inch front tyre. I spoke to my local dealer and he said a lot of people are trading in their AT for this bike. 90 percent of their orders are for the NT1100 DCT. I currently have a deposit on a Lowered BMW R1250GS TE. I am tempted to try out the Honda. Thanks for your review :)

I would try a Tracer GT and the Tiger 900 GT PRO (disclosure: that was my choice) before making commitment, however, I do think the NT would still be good choice, particularly with the DCT box (I had a X-ADV before the Tiger), I kept mine in "Sport2" and I do miss having the DCT on the Tiger. The Honda AT did have a foot operated 'Gear' lever option in lieu of the Flappy Paddle switches, which may be better way of Shifting when in the fully manual mode. I did consider another BMW Purley for the 3 year warranty and aftersales. The icing on the cake was the brake discs warping at 17k even though the original pads still had well over 50% life left.
