Hyundai's Kona small SUV gets more sophisticated in second generation guise. Jonathan Crouch drives it.
Ten Second Review
Hyundai's compact Kona SUV has evolved in this second generation form. As before, there are mild and full-Hybrid options, plus an EV. And all offer more space, greater sophistication and smarter looks. Sounds promising.
Background
Hyundai is perceived very differently now to the way it was back in 2017. And you could argue that the primary reason why is down to one model: the Kona small SUV, a car named after the Western district of the island of Hawaii. 2017 was the year combustion Konas were launched, but even more significant was the arrival of the full-battery Kona Electric a year later, which along with its close cousin the Kia e-Niro kick-started EV sales in Europe. But that original Kona model line was a little cramped inside. And felt a little cheaply furnished and low-tech for a car supposed to bridge the gap between the brand's entry-level Bayon SUV and the mid-sized Tucson model.
This second generation Kona though, must do just that. Again, it shares much with its similarly engineered Kia Niro cousin, including a new K3 platform. Last time, the EV version was a spin-off; here though, the combustion variants we focus on in this Review are derived directly from the MK2 Kona Electric model that was designed first. As before with the combustion models, there's a choice of mild hybrid or full-Hybrid powertrains, but not (interestingly) a Plug-in Hybrid model; unlike its partner Kia, Hyundai sees very little future for that approach. And this second generation Kona is very much about the future - as you're about to find out.

The Nissan Quashqui was more expensive than the Kona when I was looking and their full electric was ridiculous in price. The trouble in Australia is Nissan won't bring in lower spec ones. If you want a full electric you have to go the top spec model as thats all they import into Australia with the Nissan. So I went the Hyundai Kona Hybrid Premium with Sunroof. I also don't trust full electric yet as many have caught on fire while charging in people's garages !

We've just ordered a Kona N-Line S, hybrid, in denim blue. Can't wait. Will be a good 'retirement' car for us. Moving off our beloved Tucson Ultimate hybrid (2022), changing the car earlier than planned to maximise the trade in value before the new Tucson launches. Due with us, worst case, end of August. A great review (as always) which helped us make the decision.

Yesterday we ordered the N line s full EV in ultimate red, which thanks to the motorbility scheme cost us £1500 as a " deposit", its a lot of car for £500 a year. Got told they have the model/ colour in group stock so will ' maybe' be pdi'd and arrive next week.

The Australian model must be different to the English one as there is a space saver spare in the back . Also I went for a test drive in the Kona Hybrid Premium model and it was far from sluggish!

I agree, I have a 2024 Kona Hybrid Ultimate and think it feels much faster than its 0-62 figure suggests. Also, the funny thing is that in tests of the Niro they tend not to criticise it's performance even though it's about the same as the Kona. I'm very pleased with my new Kona Hybrid -it's good to drive, very well equipped and comfortable.

The worst colour for this car is the white, in any darkness colour seems so nice.

The nice thing about the previous model was its petite size. This is just too big. Europeans still have a decent range of small cars. The U.S. doesn’t.

In the same way a Range Rover is ugly I suppose. I'd probably still have one though!! They look better in real life.
