This is my new 7.3 IDI build, with a Typ4 cam and 'improved' valve grind(by Typ4 no less). She lives!

MacRobb how did you correct the 180? In this video its sounds better than great. Did you disassemble to align all the marks?

Pulled #1 glow plug, cranked over until TDC #1 with intake and exhaust closed(so air coming out glow plug hole up until the crank mark), then just pried up the IP gear housing(with pump, gear etc still in place) enough to rotate the gear to where it should be - pin at like 4:30, and the two opposite bolts at like 10 and 2 - straight across from each other. That should get me within a tooth or so.

Doing a 7.3 with my son now haven't tried to start yet but when putting the Injection pump back on I used the marks on the gear from the i.p. and that camshaft gear.Is my timing going to be right? Also I enjoy your videos man keep them coming

It should be close... but remember, even when everything was new, timing by the marks just gets you a running engine; you need to dynamic time from there. And, honestly, when you are using used parts(IP and/or injectors), you pretty much need to time 'by ear' - adjust back and forth until you get the best power/most responsiveness, because that will be the 'right' setting for economy as well.

@@tdemola The easiest way is when it's in the vehicle; I'll get it under full acceleration and see how she sounds at 2000+ RPM. If you are getting white or gray/blue smoke, advance the timing a little. Black smoke, perhaps retard it. You want it just advanced of where you don't get any white/gray/blue smoke, where it feels the most powerful. This is your "main" timing, which you adjust by rotating the whole pump(top towards passenger side to advance, towards driver's side to retard). If it's a worn pump, you may have to literally "skip" the IP gear a tooth forward to compensate for a failing advance circuit in the IP. Once the high end is where you want it, loosen the light-load cam(driver's side of the IP, on the throttle shaft) and play with it a little. The further up the cam it rides, the more retarded. Get it where it drives best at idle and just off idle performance. You'll get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Please no ether, just use WD40 or a mix of the 2.

Ether don't hurt if the the glow plugs are not working. WD40 wont light nothing. My friend had a 6.9idi with a burnt out glow plug controller and used starter fluid in it everyday for 10years and it didnt hurt anything. Why is eveyone so scared of a little ether? most starter fluids made now are only 10% ether lots of diesels were made for ether cold starts right from the factory.

Hopefully. It rained today so I didn't get it in the truck yet, but that's the only sticking point. Then, just a couple afternoons of getting everything right and she should be driving.
