April 23 I went to my local motorcycle shop to specifically buy the new Triumph Street Triple that everyone was raving about. Indian were having a demo day and I figured why not. I never considered the earlier FTRs because of the wheel size but loved the look of it. I took the FTR out for a spin and I'd say within 2 minutes I knew I loved it but I also knew the price for the Carbon was more than the Street Triple. When I got back, the salesperson told me they were offering $3000 off and 6 months same as cash. Ten minutes later I was in finance signing the paperwork and rode home on my new FTR R Carbon. Absolutely zero regrets and have been having a blast on it ever since.

Will never forget my first ride on the FTR. IT TRIED TO KILL ME! Or so I thought the first 20 min. Then I started to realize it was not the bike that had a problem, it was me. Great work Chris. I've got a 2021 FTR R Carbon (only 2 months old) and absolutely love it. Traded my well ridden MT09 which I put 50K kms on from new and couldn't be happier with the Indian. The engine is sublime.

How would you compare them for cornering/twisties? I am deciding between the 2021 mt-09 SP and this FTR. Thank you!
@TheSar2 жыл бұрын
@@corvinlord Hard to give you advice on a '21 SP which is a far more advanced bike than my '15 MT-09. The new '21 model has updated chassis and engine as well as higher spec suspension. Now - comparing the '15 to the FTR - I am far more compliant on the FTR than the MT09. The FTR is very, very stable and the throttle is very tractable on small openings meaning you can roll on early and not upset the chassis. The MT09 had a on/off throttle which made small openings hard - it was more stab and go.

A lot of people don't get and uprighted sit-on v-twin bikes. Its a character bike that can be an all-rounder at best, not particularly good at one thing, just does all of it with a fun factor. This bike is the only current made left in this style, since the HD XR1200 and still born Bronx, and also before, the Buell as we knew it. There is plenty of parallel twins doing this too, as I have. I would get this FTR if I could, but limited funds stop me, maybe a used one later.

100% spot on. I thought about the old FTR as a hooligan bike, that was a bit to long for being a Supermotar-like thing. The wheels in 2019 should have come in 2 sizes, the old and the 17". So they did a good thing with the wheels (thou the front fork could even be a degree more steep still) BUT they lowerd the seathight, and for me (6"1) that was a bad thing. I dislike to be crammed-up on a bike. I rode the 2019 FTR and the seathight/position of my legs was great. So my question would be: is the new FTR still a bike for people 6"1 and up, or more for the shorter legged riders?

@chrisnorthover75823 жыл бұрын
Excellent question! Time to get some knobbies and figure it out. I would say that the chassis changes will improve it on flat-track as the old FTR was a bit slack, especially on the UK tracks, hence the Hooligan race bikes all have a steepened head angle.

Every since Indian released the FTR, I have never understood what it was for. I still don't. Seems the enthusiasm from many places is just artificial, everyone hoping it will do the thing, happy Indian have a sporty kind of bike, happy there's some kind of American V-twin sporty thing, but it all seems so artificial because Italy, Germany, Japan, Austria, Britain have all been doing this sort of thing for decades and do it all so much better in every way. Name one metric in which the FTR accomplishes more in one aspect than the whole list of naked sporty bikes around the market. I think any aspect could be named and a few other bikes would pop to mind that does it better. I've never seen an FTR in a naked street bike shootout, a supermoto shootout, a cruiser shootout, a scrambler shootout, a cafe racer shootout. It's so far from any actual flat tracker motorcycle that it's a complete joke to bother mentioning it. The powertrain does well in the Scout but its just weird in the FTR. Seems Buell did a better job incorporating a cruiser engine into a sports chassis making a bike that wasn't trying to be something it isn't, at least the Buell excelled at some particular thing that most other bikes didn't.
