New IRA leader Thomas Ashe Mellon arrested after failing explosives swab at Portlaoise prison

New IRA leader Thomas Ashe Mellon found himself arrested by police over the border this week hours after he failed an explosives test when he went to visit inmates in the Republic’s high security Portlaoise Jail.
So what was Mellon doing meeting with the New IRA’s southern command with the permission of Northern Ireland’s courts and in the company of the respected Fianna Fáil TD Eamon O’Cuiv.
Nicola speaks with her colleague Allison Morris about the future of the New IRA and hopes that they may be considering a more political horizon.

It is important to remember that the worst crime committed was not any wrongful convictions but the murders of 21 innocents and other maimed for life in my home city. These crimes were committed by Irish Republican terrorists. It is also important to note that the 6 were not found to be innocent rather their convictions were quashed for being "unsafe". All 6 men could not explain why they were all attempting to leave England for Ireland although it is now believed they were going to attend an IRA funeral in Belfast of a man who had killed himself attempting to plant a bomb in nearby Coventry. So at the very least they were all IRA sympathisers and kept some pretty poor company. They were not just a bunch of "random Paddies" rounded up to be fitted up for the crimes.
