This is very timely and eye-opening. I teach part time at a protestant seminary and they have been using very similar language. They talk about rethinking the church and reforming evangelism. It all seems to be rather vague and insipid. Their latest move is that they have formed a committee to explore their position on sexuality. I am writing a letter in opposition, and the letter you shared helps me.

You might want to do a video on Catholics Unscripted about modernism. My understanding is that modernism is the same as "progressivism" in the church. But all too often, I see people claiming JP II and Benedict were "modernists" when they were not at all. I would say that most progressives in the church today adopt one or more aspects of modernism. Pope Francis and Fernandez probably are modernists. But the term is often thrown around to describe anyone who adheres to Vatican II - or is fine with the Novus Ordo, or agrees with any pope after Pius XII.. It would be helpful to know what people are actually talking about when they use the term. Perricone uses the term in his article.

Modernism started with scholars exploring new ways of understanding the Bible based upon language experts and archaeological discoveries . There were various new translations of the Bible that upset people. These new interpretations led to theologians reconsidering the meanings of theology, the sacraments and liturgy. The Second Vatican Council based its deliberations upon these new interpretations of Scripture and they revised the liturgy and the understanding of sacraments. The 20th century scholars who contributed to these new interpretations included Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants , so ecumenism began through shared scholarship. Traditionalists were upset about this too. There are theories about Freemasons designing the novus ordo liturgy. There are theories that the changes in the liturgy were designed to remove the understanding of the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. So it was all a Protestant freemasonry plot to destroy the Catholic church. Most traditionalist writers who refer to " modernism" are talking about all these theories. From 1907 until Vatican II priests had to take an oath against " modernism" . So " modernism" has a different meaning from " progressive". However this writer is talking more about the changes in language and conformity to the world of the group involving Pope Francis and his contemporaries and the synodal process. This involves " magical thinking" , like believing that you can change your gender and inventing a ' science' of gender. A better term for what they are doing is being " woke". However he is more concerned that they have completely abandoned any concept of sin.

Popes in the past have spoken about modernism. Pope Saint Pius X condemned modernism as the synthesis of all heresies in his encyclical Pascendi Dominici gregis. So modernism was already creeping into the Church in his lifetime. You would benefit from reading that encyclical.

It is dangerous to ignore Pius X. Before Vatican II i heard a priest protesting that he did not “understand” the Modernists. Yet it was this pope who foresaw the coming of the great civil war that was coming to bring down the dynasties of Europe and at the same time exposed the pretenses of liberalism and scientism.
