One of the things that theologians and judges learn very quickly that you cannot make a rule that contradicts other, already existing rules. The whole of the faith, and the law, must be internally consistent. You cannot make up a rule for gay couples, and then leave it at that. Fernandez apparently, because of incompetence, made up a rule on blessings for "irregular couples". But in his mind, this only covered gay unions and divorced and remarried. He never bothered to think about other sinful relationships (lets face it, "irregular" really means sinful). So Mark is right to ask what about incestuous couples, what about serial child abusers, what about every other kind of sin. Because Fernandez is incompetent, he never even considered these questions. He viewed his job as getting the church to start blessing sin, and nothing was going to stop him. Fernandez does not even address the questions about violating Holy Scripture, conflicts with scripture, or conflict with all other Catholic teaching. He just did not care, because he is incompetent.

Once the Pope has affixed his signature, it is he who is responsible for the content of the document, not the person or persons who drafted it.

The official version of Fiducia Supplicans, as it appears on the Vatican web site, records that it was signed by Cardinal Fernandez and counter signed by the Secretary of the Dicastery. Then, at the foot of the document, is a memorandum of a meeting which took place with the Pope. It is therefore assumed that Cardinal Fernandez discussed the document, generally, or specifically, with the Pope before he signed it. The Pope did not, in fact, append his own signature to the document. However, the memorandum at the foot is intended to give it authority, by recording that Cardinal Fernandez did meet with the Pope before he (Cardinal Fernandez) signed it.

I once read an account from a journalist who had been sent to write an article on what it is like in a nudist colony. He concluded that clothes are not, primarily, designed to keep prying eyes out, but to keep wobbly bits in. His main objection was that nudism was impractical. First I’ve heard of Cardinal Zen’s document coming forward, thank you. It’s sad though that so many Cardinals and Bishops are not saying anything out of fear of retribution from the Pope. If they would just come together with their refusal to go along with the Pope’s and Fernandez’s complicity to push this (something so against Church Teaching of the Abomination of these sins) through; they could stop them cold. BUT By their being silent or accepting of F. Supplicans they are also complicit.

You really should correct the title of this video. Zen has not declared that Fernandez has written heresy. Zen asks the question "has Fernandez written heresy?". These are two quite different things.

I hope the next Pope will be an African. I have for a long time believed that the future of the Catholic Church is in sub-Saharan Africa. I hope that one day African missionaries will come to re-evangelise Europe [including Britain and Ireland] and North America. The Parish I attend in St Leonards has several African families who regularly attend, two of them very active. FYI I'm a white Brit.[St Leonards is in on the south coast of England in the county of East Sussex, it is about 62 miles/99km from London]. I have a question re irregular relationships:- are the following invalid in the Church or merely illicit:- Marriages between first cousins A marriage between a widow and her dead husband's brother A marriage between a widower and his dead wife's sister.

Can the Church survive without a direct connection to the Apostles? If we look at Protestantism, we see a great many believers with a strong personal faith which, if founded solely on the Sacred Scriptures, necessarily closely resembles the Catholic Church, since it was the Catholic Church which decided upon the Canon of the Sacred Scriptures. So, fidelity to the Sacred Scriptures does, necessarily, involve a certain degree of fidelity to the successors of the Apostles who assembled the Sacred Scriptures and confirmed their reliability. So, to this limited extent, Protestant Churches are “apostolic”. However, as we know, without any current apostolic authority, they have divided so often that there are now tens of thousands of distinct Protestant sects, in addition to innumerable “non denominational Churches”. By comparison, the Eastern Orthodox Churches, which have maintained a continuity in terms of apostolic succession, have retained an essential degree of unity. While they do, of course, squabble with each other over administrative matters and there are, I understand, one or two minor disagreements on the finer points of dogma, they do, essentially, still believe and teach what the Apostles believed and taught. So, it would appear that it is apostolic succession which determines whether a Church can survive or not. Is the Bishop of Rome an essential feature as far as an Apostolic Church is concerned? Well, clearly, it was always the Lord’s intention that all of the successors of the Apostles should remain in perfect unity, so, to at least some extent, the Eastern Orthodox Churches must retain a degree of spiritual unity with the Bishop of Rome, who must, in a similar way, retain a degree of spiritual unity with the Bishops and Patriarchs of the Eastern Churches. However, the position of the Eastern Orthodox Churches is much more Scriptural. When Jesus said to the Apostles “He who hears you, hears me” he was addressing all of the Apostles together. The Eastern Orthodox Church believes that an Ecumenical Council must include all of the successors of the Apostles. As a result, the Eastern Churches do not recognise any Ecumenical Council which took place after 1054. To some extent this does protect them from error. There is no Eastern “Pope” who can hijack the Church and use his supreme authority to introduce error and heresy into the Church. This does give rise to the question as to whether a Pope, or further Ecumenical Councils were ever really necessary, since, from 1054 up to the present day, the Eastern Orthodox Churches have stood relatively secure without the need for these institutions to support and maintain them. The Council of Trent, for example, was mainly called for the purpose of refuting Protestant errors and asserting the traditional teachings of the Church. In the Eastern Orthodox Churches, which never had a “Reformation” there is nothing in the teachings of the Council of Trent which directly affects or concerns them. Then, when it comes to dogmas such as the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption, the Eastern Orthodox Churches would not consider these to be in any way contrary to the teaching of the Apostolic Church and so they could believe in these dogmas, if they wish. Certainly, they have never sought to contradict or deny these dogmatic definitions - they simply take the view that they simply make more formal what was already implicit in the existing teachings of the Church. The present “difficulties” in Rome do tend to raise these issues and force us to consider just what is necessary to constitute a genuine “Apostolic” Church.
