This comment is late, however I did buy the S130 two years ago. Put on a mulching system rather than discharge, changed the oil system to a regular oil filter and oil drain, installed a fuel shut-off between filter and pump, upgraded to bearings in front wheels and, installed the poor-man power steering needle bearings. This machine does a great job and the upgrades were all things John Deere should have done in the first place. Nice video.

I got S130 2years ago, about 30hours on it. My fuel gauge just failed on me, I heard because battery inside is low or bad. Anyway owner has to buy a new gauge and it cost $75, since the battery cannot change DIY.

Thanks. Decided on the S130. Nobody's had them around here for months. Local dealer just got one in the other day and let me know. Told him I'd take it after a little thought. Wanted to buy at Lowe's with military discount.. But Worried about supplies come spring, and or increases in prices anyway. Will change the quick oil change, figure out that reverse mowing issue see how it goes.

Congrats on finding one… it really has been tough! I got used to the push-to-mow in reverse button real fast. Just a quick tap and you’re good to go. I get why people disable it but it really is a nice safety feature and isn’t a hassle at all. Yeah, Im still planning on converting the oil system and doing a video on it… just waiting for all these leaves to fall before I put it away for the season.

I bought this model earlier this yr. Love it!! A challenge I have is getting the bagger unit appropriately seated over the mower deck opening. I have watched several KZbin videos of others installing this and interestingly that part was edited out of all of them. I added a couple of heavy duty S hooks. Makes me nervous since it's not part of the directions but there was no way I could get it on otherwise. I'd love to see you take on it when you get your bagger. Nice video, by the way. Appreciate the review.

Hi, funny I had the same frustration until I figured out 3 tricks. #1. When raising the metal chute guide that needs to be up to attached the bagger, first pull it out & up holding it towards the back, #2 Leave the bagger in separate pieces & only instal the deck attachment piece first, keeping the metal plate up. Then add the cotter pin & rubber clip. Now, with the bagger hinged cover raised, slip in the 2nd. part of the chute, & then you can slide it down to connect the two together.

I just got the S120 and I love it except for the 30 second oil change thing. Is there a John Deere kit to swap it back to a conventional oil change system? I've seen different videos that give you part numbers of oil filters, drain plug extenders, and the nipple to put on an oil filter. Also since the mower is still new does swapping out the 30 second oil change system void the 2 year bumper to bumper warranty? That's my main concern about doing the swap.

Yep there is a kit. The kit and its parts are all branded John Deere and will not void your warranty. That was my concern too.

Thank you so much for your video update. We just bought a new model s130 last week from our local John Deere dealer to replace our 17 year old model LA120 Deere. I went with the model s130 because it comes with the wide tires like our LA120 had, which I very much have liked. …our s130 has only about 8 operating hours on it, doing 3 yard mows. My question> How did you find the operating NOISE LEVEL on your s130 ? Our new s130 is much MUCH noisier than our old LA120, to the point I went to our local Home Depot and bought some Milwaukee in the ear noise protection, which I never felt I needed to do with our LA120. ⬆️ I am concerned that something might be loose that shouldn’t be. Thanks for your encouraging video and your reply in advance.

Thank you so much for your very prompt reply. SO I should like not be too concerned. I may get the local John Deere dealer to have a listen and look at it, except I have to haul it 100 km and back for their tech to check it out. So I may wait I few days. …if I do get the dealer involved I will let you and your followers know how this noisy concern turns out. Thanks again for your advice from your experience.
@Toy593 Жыл бұрын
@@intheshoptv It’s been awhile, but yesterday I had the opportunity to check the decibel ( dB ) operating levels sitting on the seat of my new model s130 and then travel 1 hours to our closest John Deere dealer and their team was most helpful. 1st their sales guy went and got their mobile service technician and the service tech told me about what might be causing my new s130 to be much louder than my 17 year old model LA120. 1st he said in the last 2 years or so John Deere has substantially changed the muffler design on the s130 tractors. Also the engine is operating at HIGHER RPM. We then went out into their new tractors yard and the tech showed me on a new s130 model same as mine where there might be problems causing excessive noise from the muffler. Possible failed welds and loose muffler to engine gaskets. …so after that I had the dealer start a brand new s130 and I checked the dB levels ( with the sound meter apt on our iPhone ) at full throttle & then with the mower deck running. The dB levels were 105 to 109 dB. The dB levels I recorded back at home with our new s130 were very similar at 108 to 111 dB. SO BOTTOM LINE : it appears that my new s130 tractor IS DOING JUST FINE being much noisier than my 17 year old LA120. …so I went and bought a better set of earmuff hearing protection ( NNR 26 rated ) and now after a great visit with our John Deere dealer I AM VERY RELIEVED.
@Toy593 Жыл бұрын
I need to follow up on my previous message to offer a better measure of the operating dB level of my new John Deere s130. The dB measurements I posted earlier today where measured with the Sound Meter dB app on our iPhone and appear to be on the HIGH side in the order of 110 +/- dB. Now I also measured the operating decibel (dB) levels with the more official sounding National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s ( NIOSH ) Sound Level Meter app for our iPhone and observed significantly lower level readings, as follows: …94 to 95 dB with the mower deck running & the engine at full throttle & I was setting on the tractor’s seat. …91 to 92 dB with the mower deck NOT running & the engine at full throttle. …near the muffler at the front of this tractor I measured 104 +/- dB. So these later figures seem more reasonable & with my new 26 dB Noise Reduction ear muffs the noise level reduces to say 95-26 = 68 dB which I have learned in under the safe considered level of 75 dB. SO I THINK WE ARE GOOD WITH THIS S130 TRACTOR as long as I wear these new noise reduction earmuffs from Home Hardware here in Canada. The different measured dB levels do not effect the good outcome of my visiting our local John Deere dealer to investigate my concern that our new s130 tractor was making TOO MUCH NOISE…much more than my 17 year old model LA120 John Deere. Hope this investigation MAY help some others interested in John Deere lawn tractors.

Have the same unit. One thing to note regarding the deck being "level." The deck should be level and the height on the lever on each side and the front of each side. The rear should be slightly higher by about 1/4 inch to assure the blades are cutting correctly. Also on the "suspension" none of these lawn tractors have an actual suspension, the "bounce" or cushion come from the seat and you can change the seat, which is one thing that is upgraded on the higher level machines. I agree with you on the oil change, going to switch mine over as well. Also they do have a bagging attachment availible.

A little over 1 gal/hour is what my E120 does (20hp) so you're about normal fuel use. You're exactly right about the 30sec oil change system. It's designed for people that aren't mechanically inclined, so that instead of not changing oil at all, they at least get rid of some of it and with the larger filter help mower life. Mower "enthusiasts" that want the longest life out of their mowers, will want to convert to the conventional system(about $25 for the JD kit) and remove all of the oil with each change.

@HiddenCreekHomestead3 жыл бұрын
@@appstate1996 No, its just that the current system installed is called their ez oil change. I believe it was marketing aimed at the avg homeowner who may not be too handy and wants minimal servicing. Basically, you turn the oil filter. Quarter turn, it snaps out, you discard it and snap in a new one (that already contains new oil and is priced around $45). Sounds great BUT it only replaces a portion of the oil. While John Deere stands behind that, I guess you can call me old school but I want ALL the oil changed during an oil change. If you went to the auto repair shop and they told you they only changed a little of the oil, you’d be pretty upset. This is no different IMO. Thanks for watching and for the comment!!

Got to watch two videos from HCH in a day...awesome, thank you. Just my two cents worth. In regards to the video, may just be me but, the sound isn't even so I have to lower and raise the audio level throughout. When the mower was going, really loud, when you were speaking at the end, really quiet. Just an fyi, don't mean to complain. Re: the catcher attachment idea, personally I wouldn't go for it yet. Looks like some patchy grass so mulching all those leaves and grass trimmings in to build soil could really help. After a while of this maybe then grab the leaves for compost? Just a thought. Re: the mower, seems to work great for you so stick with what you know. My greatest investment has however been a zero turn mower with 60 inch deck. Has the suspension seat and cuts at such a speed that I've more than halved my mowing time..just so good to save that time. It does chew fuel too so likely not just your JD that does it.
