BTS released this in the middle of Covid in order to spread joy and positivity to the world! Fun fact, the ending dance moves were actually sign language, meaning things like 'dance' and 'be happy'. They perform this at the UN which is so cool!!

the bts part was filmed in south korea, the pandemic restrictions were still strict then, other people’s parts (with the exception of kids) were filmed in us

The pandemic had been dragging on, over 16 months, when BTS released this song in July 2021. The whole world was suffering from anxiety, sadness, loss, fatigue, and loneliness. Korea was one of many countries that had extreme lock downs. BTS wanted to help us feel now the joy we'd feel, someday when we didn't need permission to visit friends and family, go to work, go to school, go shopping, go to public events, etc. They made this song in English so people around the world could sing along, made a simple dance everyone could post on TikTok, and included sign language so even more people could share the joy. Even if we didn't have permission to leave our house, we could still have some joy right now, because, "We don't need permission to dance!"

they actually had a whole dance challenge and a collaboration with youtube shorts for this song

the song was released on army day and was in the ‘butter’ album together with butter that was released on the same day as permission to dance

the announcement for this song was very fun, they had an online sowoozoo concert in june and at the end of it there was an announcement disguised as a news segment with members being the voices

Imagine watcing this VDO during COVID-19 locked down era. I cried when i saw those people took off their surgical masks because in real life (at that time), we had no permission to even take the mask off.
