I believe that Leica should fix this issue by supplying every Q3 owner with a replacement hood. Any excuse that they may use to suggest that this is anything but a design flaw is unacceptable. Thankfully it is an external, replaceable component ant not a part integral to the camera so it is simple for Leica to engineer a solution. So come on Leica, put your hands up, admit that you screwed up and provide your customers with a fix to the problem that you created. If you don’t the damage to your reputation and brand will be much greater than the cost of the fix. Let’s all complain directly to Leica Customer Service, if they get enough of a backlash then perhaps they will do something about it.

Works like a charm with the filter and in macro mode. But really, Leica, it seems your left hand wasn't talking to your right hand when you put the Q3 43 together. I have had a Breakthrough Photography X4 CPL 49 mm on the 43 mm lens ever since I began using the Q3-43. The X4 CPL has external threads, so I grabbed a cheap rubber hood out of a drawer and screwed it on. When I want to adjust the X4 CPL I grab the rubber hood and turn it as desired. Works like a peach. I think Leica is unconcerned if your Q lenses become scratched. They would much rather sell you a new camera and lens than a filter. YES, I want to use filter, my gosh!!!! I will use a method someone came up with which is not perfect, but will at least allow the use of POL and ND filters or UV/clear filters. He put a very thin .25cm? piece of painters tape (like masking tape) about 1cm long at the inner most part of the lens hood threads. This allowed him to use the 28mm original lens hood and use a filter, but more importantly he could also use the Macro mode on his Q343. I have ordered an extra Q328 hood for this use until such time as Leica finally sees the errors of their way. There is some YT video I saw on this. Search for it. BTW the new Q343 Multifunction Protector has been recalled in the US at least. I surmise this is because some designer forgot that people remove SD cards and to do this with this new case it requires removing the shoulder straps at both ends before removing the protector case and before removing the SD card. What were these designers thinking??
@kqschwarz3 ай бұрын
One thing that pisses me off to no end is when camera manufacturers create lens hoods that do not accommodate filters. My biggest gripe is the inability to handle polarizer filters, which even the Q3 28mm also cannot do. To be clear, a polarizer filter must not only fit under the lens hood (both taller and wider than protective UV filters), but also must be accessible to the user with the lens hood on so the degree of polarization can be adjusted shot to shot. The times where a polarizer is most useful (bright sunny conditions) is also the time one needs a functional lens hood. Eschewing the lens hood for the sake of a polarizer is often counter productive. It not only Leica that has this problem. Every one of the Sony 1.4 GM prime lenses do not have enough room in them to allow the mounting of both a polarizer and the hood, let alone have a hole in the side to allow for adjustment of a polarizer even if one could find a model that fits. What a pain!

…strong work! You solved my concern for environmental exposure and easy cleaning with a standard filter by finding and testing numerous options and I thank you. I often use a polarized filter and BnW filters on my Q3. I find the assumption of design vanity over function a sideways slip on Leica’s part a BIG ownership issue. Yes, offering a filter thread filter option may help with lens flare; but by no means does it it protect the lens as well as a outer lens barrel mounted hood like the OEM Q. The accessory hood from Leica or third party threaded to the filter mount is not only frigidity; but also risk of damage to the Macro cams if there is accidental blunt force. IDK, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth that Leica has made owning the New Q more complicated thing simple. As for thin filter options, there is a Chinese company, JJC who makes adhesive mount protection filters for the Ricoh Grlll. Perhaps they will jump on this and provide an option as what they make is even thinner. ❤

I have both Q3 models, and also like to use filters. So far my solution has been this. Firstly, I have a round Leica lenshood on the Q3, and I have moved this to the Q3 43, along with a K&F Nano-D series UV filter. Everything works OK on the 43 with this setup, including macro. I don't have a lens cap on the 43 yet, but I think I have some plastic clip-ons of the right size, and if not, they're cheap enough to buy. Meantime, on the Q3 28, the original square lenshood is back on, with a filter, and a Q-Cap lens cap. I see that the Q-Cap makers are producing a new version for the 43 square hood, but anyone using that with a filter is still going to get the macro problem, but at least there'll be a cap and hood combination available.

This is a major snafu from Leica. The way to solve it without changing the external design, is to make the hood with a greater recess inside, if there is enough material to do it. If not, then Leica will have to make the external diameter for the inside recess, larger. This is how I look at it without having a Leica 43mm and no access to the hood itself. Leica will manufacture the new lens hood with the modified internal recess to allow the Leica UV Filter and permitting the Macro mode. Then they will issue a recall to all those that already have purchased the Q3-43, and it will be a free swap. Further sales will only include the new lens hood. This is a given.

The solution, as a few below have mentioned, is to use one of the Leica 49mm round lens hoods, which allow room for 49mm filters and which also accept either a 49mm lens cap on the filter (or the lens itself, of course, without a filter) or else a 67mm lens cap on the front rim of the filter. While the latter cap (67mm) works fine, the former cap (49mm) has the advantage of being seated down inside the lens hood and therefore being protected by the hood from being knocked off (and possibly lost) when accidentally bumped.

But alas, nobody is perfect, not even me. :-) I indeed like the round, ventilated ones - the one for the 28 arrived today, now only the colored soft-shutter-botton marks the difference between them (and the color of the shoulder strap). As for Leicas response to the issue: I definitely don't think they will design a hyper-slim filter - would be much too fragile), They most probably will come up with a modificatd square lens hood - probably for free for registered Q3 43 buyers. Won't cost them too much and will appease the buyers. I myself will of course stick with the round ventilated ones - vintage like myself. ;-).

But, as said in the video, the lens hood "as is" protects the lens very well from scratches so I just shoot the Q3 without a protective filter and have the macro mode available.

Have a look at my post, which I think sets out what I've found. In summary, the only things that don't work or can't be made are using its supplied square lens hood with a screw in filter on the Q3 43, or using the Q3 supplied square lenshood on the 43 with a filter. The round lens hood works with filters on both cameras, and no macro problem on either.

Speaking of form over function, that B+W T-Pro line apparently isn't actually titanium, which is good because rigidity of titanium could damage threads, but they colored it anyway (which is distracting) and called it T-Pro I guess all because someone at sales heard titanium is fancy

I do not own the camera, but i think it is a shame it does not work. If they had a solution, like a super thin filter i would not mind. But, there are more filters out there aside from UV. If they are clever they create new thin filters on their own.

I sold my Q3 43 again because of this design flaw. I no longer have any need to support a company that shows as little interest in its customers as Leica. It's all about profit, why should customers who have paid almost €7000 bother to find a solution themselves? An enquiry to the Customer Care with the request for a free solution was only answered with a copy paste text that refers to the manual. I don‘t get it. On the same day, Leica published another very unique product with another design flaw. Take a look at the new halfcase with handle, you can now remove the two split rings of the strap and the case every time to get to the SD card. If it wasn't so sad it would almost be funny. I'll stick with my Q3 28 even if I wanted to sell it too.
@johndewhirst30893 ай бұрын
I have the same leather case but have been using the supplied USB cable to transfer images to a PC and actually found it a reasonable option to do so. My only concern is that the cover for the connections feels flimsy. Of course the ideal solution would have been for the SD card to sit next to the battery as with the M11 but the design does not allow. As regards the leather protector it is a robust solution. Ultimately there have been compromises in the design but it doesn't detract from a brilliant camera so let's keep things in perspective.
@michaelascher26933 ай бұрын
@@johndewhirst3089 Originally, an opening in the case for the SD card was also planned. The text on the German page still referred to this opening for a few days. At the moment you can't find the case in the online shop or in the stores, I think they realised this design mistake even later than the one with the lens hood. To be honest, I find it very surprising how the majority of customers then look for solutions themselves and simply live with such design errors. Why should Leica change anything? It works great. Every price increase is accepted, every design error is accepted and even the fact that there is no longer a charger included is accepted by customers and they buy the dual charger or use the charger from the Q3. Yes, the camera is great, but leica is playing with fire here and after it gets nice and warm it will eventually burn.

There is a similar issue with the Fuji x100vi that has ultimately been solved by third party resellers (ie JJC). I doubt that JJC will need to undertake much retooling to provide a square hood / filter solution for the Q3 and pretty soon we will see advertised third party solutions. In the final event the 'problem' will be solved but Leica need to evaluate whether it compromises its brand with reliance on third party (Chinese) companies to provide a fix or to provide one itself. Surely Leica will recognise the need for the solution to be provided by Leica itself, ideally with a new square hood that is threaded as required. I think its nuts to demand that the Q328 and Q343 should be the same size and to be sensitive about adding mm's to the length. The crucial point is that the Q328 is already longer than the nearest competitor (x100vi) so it's hardly worth fretting about another 5mm. But heh, first world problems and the likely opportunism of Chinese accessory providers.

The design of the lens hood supplied with the Leica Q3 43 is an outrage or a sign of the degenerating engineering skills at Leica. Something like that must not happen! The fact that the lens hood of the Q3 (28) does not fit properly on the Q3 43 leaves me speechless and shaking my head. Now to the solutions: You already mentioned the thinner filter. I would definitely tend towards the B+W filters. I have the T-Pro 007 43mm here and the dimensions are 5.36mm in height including the thread and 2.99mm without the thread. With these dimensions, you should be able to find out whether the B+W fits by comparing it with the Hama filter - assuming that the 49mm filter has the same height. The B+W is (unfortunately) titanium-colored, which I do not like. B+W offers a black "XS-Pro" variant, which is of the same quality, but not as thin. Alternatively, you can use the round lens hood (accessory), which also allows other (thicker) filters. Since the price is absolutely outrageous, I recommend the JJC lens hood for Leica Q3, Q2 and Q instead. This costs around EUR 50.00. The "problem" with the lens cap can be easily solved by buying the Leica 14001 E49 lens cap, for example. Finally, a tip about the hand grip. The ones for the Q3 43 and the Q3 look nice, but in my opinion they are functionally inadequate. I'm not sure, but the one for the Q3 43 with the wireless charging function cannot even be removed by hand and prevents access to the battery and SD card slot. Speaking of wireless charging: that is also unspeakable. The charging station and the camera with the handle have to be aligned exactly so that charging actually starts. It's unbelievable and outrageous. Here I recommend the HG-Q3 handle, also from JJC, for just over EUR 50.00. The workmanship is great, looks high quality, has an Arca-type quick release plate design and you can access the battery, its release and the SD card slot without having to remove the grip. OK, you then have to charge it with a cable, but for me that is much more acceptable than the disadvantages of the Leica original. The brand name JJC is only on the underside of the grip and can probably be easily removed with acetone. In my opinion, Leica should be ashamed of the design of the lens hood, its mount and the accessories for wireless charging. Otherwise, the Q3 43 is a fantastic camera that complements my Q3 and will hopefully be shipped to me by my dealer in October.

Clearly a case of form over function. Leica is guilty of this in every product they manufacture, although overall I simply ignore these deficiencies and buy the product anyway. As an example, consider the Hasselblad X2D vs any Leica camera. The X2D is complete as it is sold: no accessory grips, thumb grips etc. are necessary. The handling and balance are perfect without any accessories. Not so with Leica bodies. I would be uncomfortable using any of the Leica cameras, particularly the Q and M cameras, without an accessory grip. And yet, Hasselblad has not surrendered form to function. The X2D is absolutely beautiful. I use both Hasselblad and Leica systems, and I always find myself reaching for the X2D. The M11 is a close second. On the filter issue, I never use any filters, including polarizers, I am not a professional, and so I am willing to pass up a shot that could have been improved with a polarizer.
