I have a X1 carbon 6th Gen version and it's been the best Windows laptop that I've ever owned.....the X1 carbon is just getting better with each release. @@jetmartin9501 I can only comment as an owner. Like you, I've had a carbon since gen 6, upgraded last month to a gen 9. Best decision I've made. The keyboard feel has changed, not massively, just a little. Key travel is slightly less than before, but the keyboard isn't mushy, the key coming down to its lowest point is tight and crisp, more so than other thinkpad's. Just took minor adaption time. I wouldn't go back now!

Had two X301s, X1 Carbon Gen 1, Gen 3, X1 Extreme Gen 2 and now the X1 Carbon Gen 9 and I absolutely love it. Some generations have been better to skip, the gen 9 is definitely a keeper. And as always, the durability and build quality of the ThinkPads is next to none. So I will buy any laptop, as long as it's a ThinkPad.

I own the Carbon X1 Gen 9. Delivered Wednesday. My first ThinkPad after wanting one for years due to their reputation for durability and excellent keyboard. I type A LOT. Though this CX1G9 has a very shallow travel kb, I like it. I was worried whether I would or not after other reviewers complained about it (and the kb on the Nano, which I almost bought), but I do like it after using it a few days. It's shite compared to my Toshiba Satellite kb from over a decade ago that had DEEPLY indented keys and could take a pounding, but that beast was about 1.5 inches thick or more, so there's that. For this CX1G9's slim chassis and weight, I'm impressed by it's build quality and typing feel. Love the TrackPoint, very responsive and smooth. I generally dislike trackpads, but this one's okay. And the fan is virtually silent so far, though I have yet to put this computer to any serious task since I plan to use it primarily for writing. Small, light, plain black styling, good selection of ports (I still hang on to USB-A), good display, good typing feel and QUIET. Devoid of the usual bloatware one sees on most laptops except what's built into W10 (the clean install I have planned will take care of that crap). So far, I'm in love.

Nice PC. Good keyboard layout for a PC of this screen size. Webcam was fair. Image looked a little blurry (out of focus). 1080p should be the minimum not 720p. Microphone sounded a little muffled but still usable. Display was very good. It will be interesting to see if the replacement unit you get will have a similar or slightly better microphone and camera. Another words will it perform the same or slightly different. You did not mention in this review if this PC works with a pen. Port selection was good but a micro SD slot would be nicer. I would like to see these manufacturers include better user upgradeability for the money one is paying for these units. Nice looking PC on the outside. No matter how good these machines look on the outside functionality should always be number one in deciding to purchase any PC. Anyway as always another great review.

Please do a lot of testing of the TrackPoint for the full review. All previous X1 Carbon generations have had serious cursor drift issues with the TrackPoint. Try take the rubber track point off and put on at a different angle. it's possible it's just putting a bit of side load on it at rest? Seems to help my old x220
@boscohern17743 жыл бұрын
@@paulmcnamara4332 Thanks for the suggestion. I bought a packet of the caps years ago and have experimented by cutting them into various shapes and sizes. Those experiments failed. The only thing I've tried that has worked every time is removing the cap and operating the TrackPoint directly from the white post. But that's not sustainable since it takes more effort and is uncomfortable. That said, I'll try your suggestion, but I'm not sure if it's possible to keep it at an angle. It's been interesting in the various forum posts on this problem on various websites (including Lenovo's) that some people have found solutions that work on their machines, but those solutions don't work for others. It's also notable that Lenovo seems content to just ignore the problem since, I suspect, it knows it's now the only dealer in town if you're addicted to the nub. My first laptop was an IBM Thinkpad (with an impressive 6gb hard drive) when I went to IT school in 2000. I've been hooked on nubs ever since.

Although it have Xe grafics , amd's APUs are performing nearly same if not better as I know. How these two models feels different in your hands? Is lenovo more thin and light and better qyality?
@berntlie67993 жыл бұрын
Looks nice. Some other reviews seem to indicate that (i) the performance is not much better than that of the nano, and (ii) the real life battery life is not much better than that of the nano. As an amateur photographer, I'd like to have seen an SD card reader (full SD card, not micro SD card). I agree that the video and sound qualities could have been better. I have mixed feelings about the (red) navigation nob -- it is convenient, but on a past machine, I tended to get a sore finger after actively using it for a couple of days. Also, the buttons on the top of the navigation pad seem to steal a lot of space. Finally, it annoys me that they have this awkward reversal of the Fn and Ctrl buttons. In my typing, I use the Ctrl button a lot, and with the layout on the Thinkpads, it is much more difficult to hit the Ctrl key. I know I can fix this in bios, but that is not a perfect fix (I'd like the Ctrl key to be big...). Two disadvantages with high resolution screens: (a) they use more power, and (b) Windows doesn't scale menus well, especially with non-MS programs -- so I tend to prefer lower resolution screens. What about the Yoga model? (If the X1 Carbon had pen support, I could probably use it -- I don't write much with pen, but it is useful to have the possibility). And... I'm also curious about the Latitude 9420 -- especially when it comes to its battery life.

Hey Andrew I appreciate your honesty in how you aquire every single laptop. So you personally bought the new Envy x360, it deserves a review. Mine is arriving tomorrow. I'm upgrading the NVME to a Samsung Evo 970+ and I just ordered 32GB of RAM for it. Last year's version blew me away (I gave it to my girlfriend for Christmas), and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the same thing without the numpad and with hyperthreading. It just seems perfect. I'm a programmer. I'm not an accountant, I don't need a numpad. Also, how does the heat compare to this laptop? I have a 2018 XPS and I hate it. It gets too hot and the fan is loud. The Ryzens are blowing my mind, is Intel starting to catch up on heat output? By the way, I'm going above HP's specs to 32GB, but from what I've heard about last year's model, it should work. I wonder if anyone has tried 64GB in it.

If the keyboard is anything like the Nano's, which other reviewers have mentioned, then it's markedly worse than the usual stellar keyboard you get from Lenovo. I had the Nano and found that the keyboard didn't have anything like the tactile, positive action you get with Lenovo. I compared it to my T480s and the Gen 8 Carbon, for reference. This is disappointing since the Gen 8 had already compromised some of the tactile feel of the keyboard in the interest of thinness but was borderline acceptable still (though not as good as the T480s); the new keyboards on the Nano and the Gen 9 Carbon have gone too much in that direction and lost their advantage over the competition as a result.
