I expected this. I think it's funny when everyone panics about lithium prices when we know that's temporary. Humans don't just "give up" when there is a problem and money to be made. They come up with a solution and in modern times they can do that quickly. Also, just look how primitive the existing methods are. Did anyone really doubt there was a better way to do that?

The EV batteries will save the existing grid. Every one thinks backwards. The grid disperses electrical energy. The grid is incredibly expensive $/klm. In the past small essential electrical supply was necessary. With no fossil fuels, the extremely high density energy, then the grid only supply has to be 5 TIMES BIGGER. And 5 TIMES more electric generation capacity. The grid is 10 TIMES the cost of the power plants. Nobody is talking about this matter.

Spot on Viking, DLE is the frontier technology for Lithium extraction and the method used at Standard Lithium is brilliant. NO MINING REQUIRED... There is an existing Bromine extraction facility and Standard Lithium has been licensed to tap into their existing infrastructure, including Water and Electric and most importantly their Bromine as it flow out of the existing wells. They already have a pilot demonstration plant in operation and has recently received the backing of the massive Koch Industries.

In addition, Standard Lithium's demonstration plant has been in operation for an extended period. They appear advanced in their technology allocation and use. They have no environmental hurdles as the bromine plants have been in operation in south Arkansas for decades, and the tail bromine is readily available.

This isn’t DLE! This is a solvent recycling breakthrough. So basically it cleans up the old dirty process which was/is cost effective but environmentally damaging. If this works as advertised DLE is dead in the water. Companies will shift overnight to this technology because it uses the old methods which are simple and already scaled.

The news is probably better than that. ANSTO, additionally, has a non-destructive lithium extraction method applicable to hard spodumenes. So, Australia has all bases covered. E3 Lithium (Canada) and Lilac Solutions (USA), too, have come up with processes akin to the one mentioned in this vlog.

Yup, there's also EnergyX using filters and this company IBC Advanced technologies that has a 1 step extraction chromatography based method called "Direct Lithium to Product" (it literally just grabs the lithium out of the mixture of other salts as the liquid passes through). The green revolution is moving faster than anyone could have imagined!
@chris27gea58
@chris27gea58 Жыл бұрын
@@crispisauce Additionally, a scientific research cooperation between The University of Texas [Austin], Monash University and CSIRO seems to have played a big role in these developments. EnergyX seems to have gained a broad and exclusive license from the The University of Texas to commercialise industrial technologies arising from this research. Despite that Monash has spunoff a startup, ElectraLith, that says its mission is "to sustain a clean energy future by enabling cleaner, cheaper, and faster lithium production from all manner of feedstocks around the globe". Additionally, Monash researchers also appear to be working with researchers from the University of Melbourne, although it isn't clear whether they are from the group associated with Ekosolve (mentioned in this vlog) or not.

These are all amazing updates. I wonder if we could get a 2023 update video that does a rundown of all these technologies... It's trading back under 10,000 USD which is double the 2010/2011 price but still WAAAAAAY less than the peak price which spurred this mini-technology boom..@@chris27gea58

Please note - "extraction Process" Right now the "process" is a solar one - you put lithium out in pools in the sun and let it precipitate out. Your process requires energy and water in a plant - did you see those trucks in your video carrying water? It is slow and it is expensive and unless you try to power these trucks and plants by solar - you burn a lot of CO2 doing it. In the right spot it might make sense; but i feel sure you won't see Lithium prices drop soon - invest in lithium I guess.

No IF with DLE Scaling this system Viking is referring to from the LAB to full industrial scale use is quite a journey, one where many bright ideas wither and die. As the ev production improves and ramps up the sales of ice goes down but ice production does not slow as much as it should and the unsold ice are stocking up. This is slowly increasing and only just beginning but we are beginning to see this happening. The less ice they sell the more pressure on ice prices increases and the death spiral is in action. May be unexpected but should not be.

What solvents are used ? I'm guessing that info is not available due to trade secrecy, if 5% of solvents not recovered and its on an industrial scale, where do those solvents go and what are these solvents? Seems most information is that released by the company in press releases. Invest in a company that little is known about the chemicals used? If you want to make money, maybe you will, but what consequences to environment, I'm guessing very little known about solvents in detail? How about slow down and really do some research

A new process for refining titanium could benefit the transportation industry. In the early 19th century aluminum was used in very costly jewelry and was kept in collections along with rare diamonds. . Then an economical electrolysis process enabled the metal to become affordable . Titanium is relatively abundant. High quality deposits are not common. The current titanium refining process requires multiple steps, preventing the common use of the light metal. The periodic table of the elements is like having the 16 color box of Crayola when you need the 64 color set. It is, what it is. The limits of materials science causes the human body to be wonderfully biodegradable and many technical achievements to be just beyond our grasp. We might destroy the earth mining for increasingly restrictive minerals when the Earth's crust is rich , but it's beyond our reach. Geo thermal energy seems to offer unlimited potential but the deep borehole tech is not practical and the hot corrosive material that comes up would destroy the generating plant . Let's harness the volcanoes - not!

So, from the footage, just wear rubber gloves, reach into the pond, squeeze the liquid with your hands, and nod knowingly at your coworker. Looks good!

New breakthrough is welcome. Though there is always risk of slippery salesman and snake oil. Direct lithium extraction is no new idea, you can read about it with simple search. Remember Nikola Motor, Lordstown Motors, Elio Motors, Vandenbrink Carver, there are many start ups who never made it through. Getting Hindenburg report about SLI, does not raise my appetite either. IMO

All for it…but these are the words, promises and proofs on small scale. Now let’s wait and see meaningful production of seemingly yet another “holy grail” technology. Big part of the whole hype of producing in 4 hours instead of 18m -2 years has already been un-hyped since it makes no obvious difference in yield once traditional operations are up and running…

I wonder if the process is similar to hemodialysis to with a "bath" = solvent. I dialyzed a patient last month that overdosed on lithium carbonate and explained to him that the world needs the lithium to make batteries for EV. The surgeon placing the dialysis catheter LOL. I explain to the FUD group about lithium spills and environmental consequences that you simply let the water evaporate and collect the lithium. You can stick your hand in the stuff but don't consume too much of it as it will cause bradycardia. Are they willing to try that with the waste water on fracking and feel safe?

Here is the number one problem with all mining PERMITS. The USA is dead last in giving out permits 5 to 10-years. Good luck with your pilot plant in ten years you might be able to use it. IBATF has their's done waiting on PERMITS> None of these DLE well get their permits. Reinjection of the bine is also a very big issue.

I don't think I'd be celebrating just yet. It needs some demonstrated volume and scale. Otherwise could be just a pipe dream and pie in the sky unrealistic forecast. Hope its as successful as promised but,,,,,

I heard that the Lithium price in China has been jacked up as a money making scheme by lithium producers and that the CCP (who wants to help the local EV industry) is cracking down on it.
@sunrisejak2709
@sunrisejak2709 Жыл бұрын
@@danielstapler4315 Your prediction could be correct. But the underlying problem I see is the uncomfortable dependence on a single country for this critical resource. Many other locations need to be developed so that the world is not beholden to a powerful entity fir their energy needs. We've seen the negative effects of this monopolization from the oil industry. The volume of Lithium being extracted today is a very very small percentage of what us required in order to achieve EV volume goals set by various governments. Price is less of an issue than available quantity.

The only question I have is whether DLE is commercially scalable. If it can't be used to ramp up production to the huge quantities needed for the EV market, it's basically dead in the water, like a lot of startup ideas. It will be interesting to see if they can actually do this.
@richardvivian3665
@richardvivian3665 Жыл бұрын
This isn’t DLE! It’s a solvent extraction technology. So basically it’s using the old method but being able to recycle the solvent (which was the dirty and expensive part of the process). There’s no way in hell DLE could compete with this if it actually works as advertised.
@apterachallenge
@apterachallenge Жыл бұрын
@@richardvivian3665 DLE just means Direct Lithium Extraction. If that's what they are doing, it's a form of DLE isn't it? They just improved it by recycling the solvent.

I think this is good approach because they don't need large brine ponds that use up space and take months to dry out. Maybe for a while they will do both before phasing out the brine ponds or at the least they won't be making more brine ponds.
