In 1971,my auto shop class went to Fremont calif GM assembly plant we watched chevelle's being built for 6 hours, we saw about 50 chevelle's drive out of the warehouse into the yard, there where hundreds in every color, a Vietnam vet 82nd airborne on his shirt let me sit in a red one with black vinyl top

Don't you just hate when that happens. And they are still doing this in the auto industry. The new Land Rover Defender has a front and rear that do not match.

Exactly right. It kind of baffles me that they put the single rear taillight bumper on the 1970 when it had the double front headlight front bumper. I think it would have been obvious to have dual light front and rear bumpers on the 1970 to give it a much more homogeneous look. In any case I still have to put the 1970 as my favorite year for the Chevelle especially those 4,475 units which came with the mighty LS6 454 engine pumping out 450 HP.

Lol, as a young boy, I thought the same thing! ‘70 front, ‘71/‘72 rear with the El-Camino front bumper! Oh, Hi Chip! Other ideas: functioning Cowl Induction on a ‘70 Camaro SS, then a ‘70 300 Deluxe Chevelle COPO, domed hood, dual snorkel, metal framed vent window door channels off the Skylark, rubber flooring, bench seat 4 Speed, (ok, 6 Sp;) body colored steel wheels, Polyglass tires with the dog dish caps, chambered exhaust, white 454 scripts above the front markers, 300 Deluxe emblems, front & rear bumper guards. Code 63 Desert Sand, no stripes! Ty for all the work. That look you and your father shared is the look my father and I shared. He rode me hard to learn for reasons I couldn’t understand until he was gone, then it all became clear. That Love of a father shines in the lucky Son hopefully sooner than later! 👍🏻

Chip, you need to hang that somewhere like the lobby, if you can. Somebody will agree with you, I'm sure. Personally, the single headlight front end is my no.1 on this chassis. Dead right about the bumper, and it does look OEM ! A single large tailight would have been the ticket for the later cars, too. PS; Hagerty, please get Chip to walk through all the tasty memorabilia in his office- I'm sure most have some of the great stories we all talk about in them. Thanks for giving Chip "a clean sheet of paper" to work with.

While at a family wedding the groom was showing the 63 Impala convertible survivor he found. He told a story of a wrong turn leading to a guy at the end of a road on a lake with a ton of 60's GM potential projects hidden from view. "Did you happen to see a 68 Firebird in there?" "Yeah I did. That is if a 68 has the wide grill with the full size door windows, so no no drafts? It doesn't have a motor or trans.... and no rust, the body's perfect. See the guy camped out at the punch bowl? He's the guy." Got lucky and had the 68 Firebird home the next afternoon. My favourite of the many good looking GM vehicles of the late 60's.

your beating an old drum Chip we've all known that forever. your dad probably told you that one when you were little. By the way the quick drawing you did of a 68 Chevelle on a t shirt for me in Toronto was amazing. it was for my brother-in-laws birthday. he still has and wears it. And still has his 68. I don't know what I like more your art work or the end product. I really like your work and it was nice seeing your dad with you on overhauling. my girlfriends (now wife) father taught me the trade when I was 19. sorry to hear of your fathers passing . I am partial to the 1969 Chevelle SS 396 because I owned one. I have driven a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 with the LS6, 4 speed. It was awesome, and just a beast. I always wanted a 1959 Impala with a 1960 Impala front clip. Like the teardrop taillights on the 59, but the front end on the 1960 Impala is really sweet.

I have been wanting to do some very similar changes to my 70 Malibu convertible since I purchased it in 1989! I also wanted the Monte Carlo/El Camino front bumper as it had round signal lights. Never understood the use of rectangular signal lights up front! And I think the car looks fantastic with the body color mirrors over the 60's looking chrome units. Most people always said I'd be hacking the 70 up changing those items! Now the man himself, Chip Foose puts it to paper! Gotta love it!

My brother-in-law owned a 1972 Chevelle. In fact, he owned it twice. I always liked the double headlight look of the '70 more and I really like the lights you dropped into the front bumper. Swapping in the '72 bumper seems to be a natural - too bad Chevrolet didn't think it out a bit. BTW, only my granddaughters have more markers than you.😉

Thanks, Chip, for seeing the styling mismatch that a lot of us have observed for a long time as well! I had a '70 Chevelle about 20 years ago (when you could still find running & driving examples for under $5K!), and I remember wanting to put the '71 rear bumper on it. For one thing, it's just a better looking style than the '70, and also you could argue that it does mirror the dual headlight design that is in the front. Chip: If you read this, please "correct" another of GM's muscle era styling mistakes and find a '65 LeMans /GTO and section about 8" off the rear quarters to give it the proportions of a ' 65 Chevelle. '64-'67 BOP A bodies all looked like they were just too long in the deck area on what were otherwise good looking cars. if not Chip, someone out there, please do this!

Oh man... The 1970 Chevelle is probably my No.1 "American Muscle" car - I remember there was another shop that did a "Green" one with a modern Corvette 6ltr V8 - I'd love something like that, but I'd probably go twin-turbo rather than supercharged. Of course, as an Aussie, I'd just get a '72 HQ Monaro coupe (probably or closest equivalent to the Chevelle - there was even a GTS version with the 350 chev engine)
