I was at this game last night and I think Iowa is still adjusting to someone like Lucy who can penetrate the paint and shoot. We haven't had that midrange game since maybe Kathleen Doyle. Kate Martin SOMETIMES hit the midrange but now it needs to be a central part of the game. And Ava says "HI-den." Looked like some of the newer players, like Ava and even Lucy, we're still adjusting to Carver Hawkeye Arena, and I can tell you, that crowd was subdued last night. Wait till we hit 100, 110 decibels. It's unreal in there times. Very, very loud. C22 and her crew THRIVED on that energy. Lucy looks like she's still figuring out how the play through the crowd noise.

Their defense is so much more purposeful than the last couple of years. It looks like Kylie and Lucy play defense like Gabbie, and the rotations and help are a lot better down low.

I love a good underdog story, so yes I think it is great that you are covering non top 25 teams. Too often the top 25 teams, at least those ranked at the beginning of the season, are just about which college was able to recruit the most top high school stars. I think it is much more fun to see players who you don't expect become great players. I also agree that this years freshman class is great. All of these talented freshman is a great sign for the future of not only college basketball but women's basketball in general.

I do believe Jan Jensen has that same thought in mind for Hannah. I've seen a couple interviews where she's alluded to that. Heiden just needs confidence...I agree that she will be a good one

Good morning, Quita. I always appreciate your summary/analysis of mid-major games. Yesturday you suggested viewers check out games not necessarily in the power-give (or four). Also, I agree regarding the fouls ... too many. Finally, some of these teams may be in the top 25 sometime during the season. Peace and blessings

I really love that Jan Jensen, and Lisa Blauder before her, is not just a very good basketball coach, but an excellent life coach. Watch some of her extended interviews on KZbin and you will see that she is first and foremost interested in shaping strong young women for their future lives in, but mostly out of, basketball.

Yes! You should include the mid majors. This way you can highlight players who are possible draft prospects that we probably wouldn’t have heard about otherwise. Just like on the men’s side, Damion Liillard coming from Weber State as an example. Plus, the upsets like you reported on that would make it interesting for your viewers. Who doesn’t like hearing about Top25 upsets?! 👍🏽

Iowa Freshman Ava Heiden is going to be amazing. She moves really well, just needs to get a bit more experience at the college level. O'Grady will start initially but I think we will see a lot from Ava before the season is over. Hanna will primarily play the 4, her natural position; she's visibly more confident and her outside shooting is looking very good. Teagan Mallegni (pronounced Ma-lay-ni) and Taylor Stremlow are also Freshmen who will have significant minutes. Kylie Feuerbach and Taylor McCabe are stepping up big time and remember Syd Affolter will be back soon from her knee surgery. Bench players looking good. The season looks bright!

I really agree with you in hoping that Coach Jansen is planning to encourage Hannah Stuelke to go stretch this year. I like the Candace Parker comparison, and I would also compare Hannah’s potential to fellow Cedar Rapids natives Keegan and Kris Murray. I’m optimistic that O’Grady and Heiden can give us just enough beef down low to let Hannah and the guards fly around wreaking havoc on defenses from all over the court.

Iowa got good press. Caitlyn's biggest effect is on the Football team's recruiting. Iowa is now a national brand how long can they carry the weight.
@amyk63198 күн бұрын
I was actually surprised at how many 3pter they made in the exhibition game last week. But they were definitely off & unable to make their 3pters drop in this game yesterday. And I am not worried about Iowa figuring out their bigs situation. Developing bigs is what Jan Jensen is known for. Supposedly Czinano had a horrible shot when she first got to Iowa & she became the most efficient center in the NCAA. So I think Jensen will figure that out. And I am so glad they are moving Stuelke as a PF. She was dropping 3s in the exhibition game, but she didn't seem to be as aggressive on offense in this first regular season game. Iowa's 5s are great in college games, but they are never good prospects to move on to the WNBA. They are not big enough to play that traditional big role in the WNBA & without a variety of shots, there was no confidence they could spread the floor (which is needed in the WNBA with the 3 sec paint rules). So moving Stuelke to the PF & letting her take 3s & develop a mid range game will so help her get to the next level & prepare her for the WNBA.

To me, it looks like Addie O'Grady has slow hands. Against most post players, she will be OK, but against quick players she will quickly be in foul trouble. Once Affolter returns to the lineup, I think we will see a lot of 4 guard offense plus Stuelke in the post.

keep in non-top 25 teams, as many teams as you’re willing to cover would be so great
@dougpost89588 күн бұрын
I think Iowa is underestimated this year because they lost so many sneiors. Their replacements, including Affolter when she returns, look very good for their 1st game. Some of the offensive passes, and their defensive play, will keep this team in most games. No more 110-105 wins.

Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan are all underrated. Lucy will likely be there for only THIS year, so it's really not the Lucy Olsen era. It will be the Addison Deal era if she stays committed to coming to Iowa.

Their coach said she is still changing who starts and who plays with whom....2 great players still out with injury or she kept out. So this sunday will be big on the road against vir tech.

I wonder if fans will stop showing up. That’s what I worry about for Iowa. That would be kind of sad to witness. I thought Iowa looked fine last night. Missed a lot of bunnies. Lucy was off from 3. And the opponent was hot from 3. But they were pretty much coasting. The Virginia tech game should tell us more.
@wendyduehr80868 күн бұрын
I hope Ada Heiden grows into the starting center position. I don't think O'Grady is athletic enough to play against some of the better bigs. It looks like Addison is in great shape though. Maybe she'll prove me wrong. Teagan Mallegni is their best freshman IMO.
@outsidethegarden8 күн бұрын
wait, we're going straight to a new era? don't we get to have a moment to grieve? not just CC, but Lisa Bluder, and Kate Martin, and Gabbie Marshall. kind of not really serious. just, this "who's the next ____ ?" narrative puts a lot of pressure on the up-coming players. and on us fans, to be honest. the whole transition-to-WNBA script OBVIOUSLY NEEDS A LITTLE FINE-TUNING. if you know what I mean, and I think you do.

more touches inside means less 3 point shots. 3 will always be better than 2. you go 2/4 inside vs 1/4 from 3 point line. even though you made 1 more field goal, you are only up by a free throw. iowa shoud average 30 3 point attempts a game easily. anything less just isnt their game

@phillipsimpson447 I'd disagree. All of the guards look good and Syd was a force last year after Molly got hurt. I agree that Hannah does look like she's matured over the off season and you can see more confidence. She looks tough (in a good way) and has the look of a leader. Great to see her in that role.
@def1ghi8 күн бұрын
@@phillipsimpson447 even in the C22 era they lost when the supporting crew didn't play max games. The final game they lost against S Carolina Kate Martin missed some clutch midrange shots and then C22 starting trying to play hero ball and it all fell apart. They might not even make the tournament this year but it will come down to getting the team together.
@mkdugan81098 күн бұрын
@phillipsimpson447 I wish she understood truly how good she is. She had that penn state game but everyone on the team/staff knew how much she could dominate if she wanted to. Caitlin even said a little while ago that she just has to remind her to get in that killer mode because she just doesn’t
@ericMT8 күн бұрын
I know this doesn’t apply to this video specifically but on the recent Hawkeyes podcast that Kate and Caitlin and Gabby were on, Gabby Marshall said she’s doing post grad stuff to become a teacher. Wikipedia says she went undrafted in the 2024 draft. Is she really that bad? Her stats are good, better than a lot of drafted players. I couldn’t figure out if she dropped out of the draft on her own or if she just gave up after no one drafted her. It would be nice to see her at least try a season in the WNBA but maybe she’s moved on, kind of like Lacie Hull who is as good of a basketball player as Lexie (twin sister). I know pro sports is hard but they’ve worked so hard to make it close to the top at the Division 1 college level and so many good players just stop playing.

I am a big Flau'jae fan, but LSU has the weakest non-conference schedule of any of the top teams. They should have schedule some games against at least some decent teams that could make the games competitive & fun to watch. It is just not fun to watch them have blow outs against a lot of teams that aren't real competition. And I hate it for Flau'jae because she is not getting the attention she deserves. But it is hard to give her praise for beating sub-par competitors. If Mulkey had scheduled some better non-conference games, she would have a much better argument for Flau'jae not getting more love & attention in the early season.

Rankings are meaningless at this point in season.
@amyk63198 күн бұрын
Early in the season, the rankings are more about which teams are most stacked with top 25 recruits, not whether they are a team that plays well together & can win games. I am much more interested in the teams that are considered underdogs but surprise everyone & step up to the challenge. And even the top ranked teams will be hit or miss at showing if they actually deserve the hype or not. For example LSU is a great team, but their non-conference schedule is so weak, we won't see how good they really are until they get into conference play. And UConn is the exact opposite, they are in such a weak conference, you will really only see if they earn their high rating in the few non-conference games they play against top teams.
