In this video I give my first impressions of Apple's new M3 MacBook Air. Specifically, I'm looking at the 13-inch model with 16GB of Unified Memory - perhaps the most important product SKU since the Apple Silicon machines first launched...
I also run a few benchmarks and compare it with an M1 MacBook Air (also configured with 16GB) - should you consider upgrading if you have one of the early Apple Silicon MacBook Air models?
Does the revised Midnight finish resist fingerprint marks better?

THANK YOU for focusing on the M1 comparison! Always irks me when the focus is on the model from a year ago, I can’t imagine many people upgrade laptops that frequently. And those that do are likely the sort of people who’ll buy the latest model regardless

The M1 with 8GB of RAM was my first Apple computer after 32 years of using Windows devices, and I was initially concerned about the limited RAM. However, three years later, I have zero regrets. If I had to buy a new MacBook today, I would still choose the 8GB RAM option without hesitation. Macs and PCs have very different memory requirements. I still can't believe how my fan-less M1 with 8GB of RAM trashes my memory-hungry a year older XPS15 which came at double the price of the mac

You should still test the Wifi speed - Max Tech found it to be faster _even if you don't have a Wifi 6e router_ - probably due to MIMO 4x4 antennas or a faster Wifi chip.

Great overview and comparison. I have the M1 air 16gb/1TB configuration as a light task laptop which I end up using almost every day all day funnily enough. The other laptop is a M1 Max with 64gb/1TB config. That's used in a music studio for production work. I love the M1 air. It's a masterpiece. Super fast and no fan. Same thing with the Pro 16". But I am kind of excited about the 28% single core bump I have to admit. That's a big deal in music where single core is king for running synths and stuff. I have some patches in Diva that actually crap out on the M1. Not enough headroom. Having more single core headroom might just solve that so I'd be interested in maybe upgrading one of the machines to the M3 architecture and seeing whats what. Again great comparison and almost custom made for me and my situation. Thanks.

I think that most DAWs lean more heavily towards the amount of 'performance cores', I know that the M1 pro performs better than M2 and M3 pro variants because apple nerfed the Pro on later models to get people to upgrade to Max for CPU perf; but will definitely be interesting to see if single core performance has a significant impact.
@Screaming-Trees
@Screaming-Trees 2 ай бұрын
@@Buckyofficialmusic Single core is king if you have a long signal chain on a single channel or if you have CPU hungry VSTs like Diva for example. There is no way to parallelize that kind of workload. CLAP supports multicore in Diva but AU doesn't. If you need to run lots of tracks then yeah more cores the better like you say.

Hi! Thanks for the video, great as always! For your deep-dive video of the MBA M3, can you please compare it to the MBP M1 too? I have the MBP M1 and thinking of getting the MBA M3 with 16 GB, but with my workflow (large spreadsheets, some design work and content editing of maximum 2 or 3 4k threads) I am on the fence about getting a fanless machine. Maybe being extra cautious because my current laptop has never fired up fans since I bought it in 2021! Would appreciate your comparison. Many thanks!

It would be good to see performance comparisons between the M2 Pro Macbook Pro 14 inch and the 15 inch M3 Macbook Air (16gb 512GB) because an official Apple refurbished version of the former seems to go for roughly how much you'd have to pay for a brand new M3 Macbook Air. Plus, the M2 MBP (14 inch) it's only about 100g heavier so it's not like you're losing much portability. Of course if people just want a Macbook Air then the M3 is great but I'd recommend folks look at what other Apple options they can get for the same price.

It might make a difference. If you do the thermal pad mod (which puts the chip heatspreader in contact with the chassis, turning the base into a big heat sink), then I expect it might be more effective.

@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 2 ай бұрын
That gets you the binned M3 Pro, which offers about 17% more multicore performance in benchmarks. In reality, it’ll be a little more due to the better thermals of the MacBook Pro. GPU is a nice step up at 40%. However, for the same or less money you could probably find a new M2 Pro model with the 12c/19g chip, which has more multi-threaded performance and even more GPU performance (assuming you don’t need hardware ray-tracing). It’s slightly behind on single-threaded CPU performance, but that probably isn’t as important.

Hi and thank you. I always have about twenty tabs and several Excel files open in the background, plus other applications (Lightroom, Mail, Sonos, a VPN) and an external screen. I've got an MBP from mid-2009 8Go/256Go and this is no longer possible, just opening Excel brings up the multi-color wheel. Hence my question, for my use, which configuration would be the most suitable ? Is the MBA M3 13" 16/512 enough or should I spend more money with the MBP M3 Pro 14 18/512 ? Thanks for your help. Regards.
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 2 ай бұрын
The MBA would be plenty for all those applications. Really, it's only Lightroom that has the potential to make it break a sweat, and even then you'd have to be really working it hard with large exports or batch workloads. The main disadvantage of the Air is the thermal throttling. The M3 chip can't sustain top performance for extended periods, whereas the same chip in the MBP chassis can do better. The M3 Pro is probably overkill, but if you can afford it, and you're not fussed about the lightweight portability of the Air, it's a superb computer. Any of these choices will be a world of difference to your current machine.

@@ConstantGeekery Thank you for taking the time to respond to me in detail. Your analysis matches mine. So I'm not any further ahead, I was secretly hoping that you would tell me that the MBA isn't enough, that way the choice was easy to make ;) I'll have to think again then. In terms of price in France, it's expensive: MBA M3 13" 16/512 = €1759 MBP M3 Pro 14" 18/512 = €2499 If I sell my Mac in 5-7 years, the MBP will have lost less value than the MBA, correct ?
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 2 ай бұрын
@@bertrusmcfly7958 in my experience Apple computers tend to hold their value quite well, regardless of the model. Once they get to 5+ years, condition of the machine and remaining battery life become more important to the value. I'd say at 3 years, you should be able to get 50% of the original purchase price back. That's typically where I would upgrade. At 5 years, I'd expect 30-40% of the original purchase price, if it's in good condition. Prices vary a lot based on timing of new releases etc., so these are just estimates. I haven't personally noticed higher percentages for MacBook Pros over Airs. iMacs certainly do hold value for longer, but laptops seem fairly consistent.

With the depreciated prices of some of those first pro machines, it could be an interesting price/performance tossup. I bought a 15-inch M2 model for my wife last year, and the extra screen real estate is very nice to have, and it still comes in lighter than a 14-inch MacBook Pro. Thanks for a nice video. I am thinking of buying M3 MacBook Air 13.6" with 16GB. As a cheap laptop windows user, my last i7 with SSD was purchased in 2012 and it is still working very well. Now I want to invest for a next 10-year device and MacBook Air is mostly attractive because of it's design and materials. As a parallel, MacBook Pro is heavier thus subjectively less attractive to Air. My concern is the temperature. I don't know what is considered to be an average user but I am often in situations where I'm using at the same time Photoshop, Illustrator, OneNote, Whatsapp, and about 60 Chrome tabs opened. Can you try it out and see how would it behave and what would be the temperature of the device? Is it bareable to hold it in the lap? I do not do gaming or video editing. Thanks for answering! How many streams of 4K video and which codecs will you be using? If you are using h.265, HEVC, ProRes or BRAW at 4K you should find it very capable. If you have multiple camera angles and intend to have these stream simultaneously.(i.e. four angles, one in each corner), you may find the limits of the external disk and GPU. @@Gaurang_Khatri It's a complicated subject! I suspect you would know if you were shooting more demanding codecs. So, if you're using standard consumer cameras, then the M3 Air will do the job fine, and is a great starting point for learning video editing. It has accelerators for common codecs, ProRes, and the GPUs work well with Blackmagic RAW. I'd recommend using Davinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro, as they have the best performance. When it comes to external SSDs, I use Samsung T7 external SSDs, which are plenty quick enough. The Pro and Max chips have additional encoders/decoders and GPU power. Aweomse for comparing M1 to M3. Comparing M2 to M3 isn't that much of a difference. Also, upgrading depends on your use case. I only got a mac for swift/xcode app development primarily so M1 16BG is good for that. M1 is still a beast. Maybe I'll upgrade when M4 rolls around. Also, I know so many people already know this, but 8gb as a base model is criminal. You'd do a lot of SSD swap with 8gb. Unless all you do is like some web browsing/excel/word etc.

Intel still king. We can run multi version of Mac OS , run 32bit and 64bit while silicon can only do 64bit. By the way Windows computers still can do 32bit and 64bit. You never run old school Fallout 1 and 2. You can run old school apps

@@macgamer1973 I run Windows 11 ARM on my Apple Silicon Macs and it can run a lot of Windows software. I have 2 Windows 10 desktops if I need to run x86 and a VM doesn't work. But, yes, the Intel Macs are the most flexible, particularly if you don't want to run in a virtual machine - which has a few drawbacks.

Unless you spend all day writing huge files to the SSD, it won’t be wearing out any time soon. For the vast majority of users the SSD will comfortably outlive the useful life of the machine. The battery will wear out much much faster.

@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 2 ай бұрын
The laptop panel is 60Hz, but you can drive an external 4K display at 120Hz via a DisplayPort adapter or USB-C. If you want to do it via HDMI , you need a USB-C to HDMI 2.1 adapter with a specific chipset. I haven't personally tested this, so I can't guarantee success, but this link may be useful: www.cablematters.com/Blog/HDMI/how-to-get-4k120hz-with-mac

I am looking forward to the Snapdragon X Elite, which may challenge Apple's domination of the ultrabook market, specifically with the MB Air M-Chips. My expectations hopefully will not be misplaced as competition will push both to innovate and improve. I think the X Elite will compete well within the ultrabook sector, but I suspect it will not compete well for pro users. As for the M3 MB Air, it is refinement and keeps the Air as the number one ultrabook, in sales for sure, and probably in all-around ability...for the moment at least!

@@ConstantGeekery Yes, it is an interesting take by Qualcomm. Relying on downclocking the performance cores to maintain efficiency. I suspect they did this to boost multicore performance. I am typing on a 3.5-year-old MB Pro M1 and it does not miss a beat for my workload I bought it for £800. Comments like yours forget that if the base was 16GB/512GB Apple would charge what they charge now, £1500, which is comparable with most premium Windows ultrabooks with that spec. So why does it bother you that Apple offers those of us that want to save money and for which 8GB/256GB is fine, a much cheaper alternative? I would have thought that was a positive? The XPS 14 base in 16GB/512GB at £1600 (no dGPU) and if I only had £1100 I could not buy that XPS as Dell does not sell any at close to that price! I really do not understand your POV and bearing in mind MB Air base make up for >60% of all sales, you are wanting to deprive them of that choice. I am a bit shocked!

@@andyH_England How about the angle of Apple being greedy and not configuring them with a realistic memory amount for the 21st century at the base cost? A $600 Windows laptop comes with 16GB of RAM and some can run dual displays long before the M3 Air came out. 8GB in a MacBook is using the SSD to make up for the lack of memory.

@@marksaxon You cannot possibly be serious about comparing a low-end Windows laptop with a premium ultrabook? As there is more to a laptop than just the config. Please compare with the relevant competition, Dell XPS 14 and GalaxyBook4 Pro 14, along with the upcoming Surface Laptop. All of which start at £1500-1600. 8GB Ram suites no one. And Apple know it. Safari massive memory leaks alone will use 500MB-1GB per tab. The whole device shuts down with +5 tabs and one other app
@andyH_England
@andyH_England 2 ай бұрын
That is untrue. There are some websites that leak RAM, and interestingly I have noted they are all rivals. The main two are Samsung and KZbin. I wonder if that is intentional by those two sworn enemies? I use Chrome for YT and Samsung's site and they no longer hog memory. Other sites are fine. I close unused tabs and close the browsers when I finish (set them up to open the same ones when I reopen the nexxt time). It is very easy to use 8GB but you do have to make an effort. But it is worth it as most Windows premium ultrabooks are now £1600 for the base models, so the £1100 for the new M3 MB Air 13-inch is a bargain in comparison for that little effort.

@@tumslucks9781 The base models are for those, the tens of millions that do not need huge specs and have used 8GB/256GB for 40 years and are fine with it. They can save £400 versus 16GB/512GB Windows laptops which you have to buy mid-range or cheaper to keep to a budget of £1100. Choice is good and if complainers just ignore the base models and went for their skew and then compared with rivals, it may be an eurka moment where they realise Apple is not more expensive, and that by offering cheaper versions they are pushing the demand curve and increasing sales. If Im really lucky getting a new one soldered on will make financial sense by that time unless Apple stop being arrogant twats and put all the ports back into their machinces again.
