the support for high-impedence headphones gives me warm and fuzzies and reminds me of the 2000s when Macs shipped with combi ports that combined 3.5mm and optical TOSlink. I'm pretty sure most people had no idea their headphone jack was also an optical port, but a lot of them probably wondered why they would occasionally see a red light faintly shining out of it. From what I've heard it was one of those neat audiophile Steve things that he insisted on adding, but I'm sure it also has to do with serving pro/pro-sumer customers who might want to plug into an external DAC/interface. Ultimately USB DACs are better and much more flexible and versatile (and bi-directional) so it's understandable that later Macs have dropped the optical capability, but it does make it slightly harder or more annoying to get a digital signal straight out to some devices, particularly older ones
@TalesOfWarАй бұрын
Those combiports were on a bunch of higher end PC's too, usually the PC's you'd also find FireWire 400 on (even when FireWire 800 was considered standard and kind of old hat on the Mac scene). One of my old workstation boards in an old custom build had them.

Thing is it's not as useful in the studio as you might think. Mostly due to clocking. They would have to add a BNC port since adat clocking protocols are just okay. In a hybrid workflow extra outputs would be useful since more is, well better, but I think you would have to create an aggregate device still if you wanted to use the built in headphone out as an output on an AUX track or something like that. And then, latency. How sensitive are you basically. But it could still be useful I think. Maybe as a send for something that isn't so strict with regards to latency (outboard reverb or something like that). More of an audiophile thing for sure. But these days most DACs for audiophile crowd will probably have a USB port anyway. In addition to something like ADAT or Spidf maybe. Anyway thems the days for sure.

@ how old is your HT receiver? Do you have HDMI in? Might be time to update to an Apple Silicon machine, even a used M1 for ~$350 will run many circles around your 2012 model and look visually indistinguishable from the outside. If you don’t have HDMI in on your receiver you can buy an inexpensive HDMI passthrough dongle with an optical out that should output a 5.1 surround signal if properly encoded. I am so close on pulling the trigger for the M4 Pro. But I am going to wait for reviews. My primary concern is heat. Apple showed restraint with the M1. My 13" M1 MBP can hit the mid 90 degrees with the fans maxed out during Handbrake x265 operations. I know the SOC can handle it and I know that is a laptop, not a desktop, but with the smaller size of this new Mac Mini I have to wonder if the M4 Pro is just going to throttle all the time.

The reviews are going to be interesting. If the cooling can cope, it's going to be a little beast. I got a Mac Pro 2008 8-core Xeon. Really old now. I hoped for Mac Studio M3 this WWDC 2024 but it never came. So after that it was obvious that it will never come, so Apple will skip M3 for Mac Studio (and Pro and Mini). Since I prefer a desktop machine with external display of my own choice I can only pick from Mac Mini/Studio/Pro. Pro is out of my league, too expensive. So now it's about Mac Mini and Mac Studio. Mac Mini M4 is revealed so we know everything. It hurts that USB-A is removed! My choices now are: 1 - a better speced Mac Mini M4 2 - wait for Mac Studio M4 and see The problem with Mac Studio is that I have to wait for WWDC 2025. Probably. So it's 7 months and some days left. I also got a good MacBook Pro so I'm okay. I feel I can wait 7 months. Mac Studio will have 10 Gbps Ethernet as default, M4 Max, TB5, more ports, and hopefully they will keep 1-2 USB-A. I don't wanna buy Mac Studio M2. It's not worth it. The first M2 came out at WWDC 2022. Almost 2 1/2 years ago. That isn't what dispatch buffers entries means. The entries are just a queue of work to do that lets the out of order engine expose a bit more instruction level parallelism to the ALUs. Basically, it contributes to the number of instructions that can be in flight, which went up by 13. We are decoding more operations because the decoder can do 10/cycle. This happens before the dispatch buffers. Whether or not more entries can be the shuttled to the ALUs depends on whether they added more ALUs and whether the added depth the dispatch buffers helps expose more ILP. While an oversimplification, if we look at behavior in loops, it means the loop body can be a small number of instructions longer and we can still find instruction level parallelism, or alternatively, we can fit more loop iterations in this window and maybe get more ILP that way. Here we assume that the loop body is mostly a bunch of serially dependent operations, though of course it doesn't have to be, in which case there is more ILP that the processor probably already found. It would have been nice if Apple told us whether there were any new ALUs to go with this extra dispatch bandwidth / issue depth, or if they were running a little lean before.

@carvalhoandreiАй бұрын
To answer quickly, yeah, the Pro chip is worth the extra 400 bucks. But since you’re really thinking about the future, the better question is: how long do you plan on keeping it? If you’re sticking with it for 2 years, just grab the M4 and save some cash. But if you’re in it for 4 years or more, go for the M4 Pro-you’ll get more when you sell it later. And remember, 24GB of RAM is way more than you need for normal use, so maybe you can save even more with the M4 16gb

My current M1 will be relegated to my home media server, and I will finally retire my old Corei7 mini (my current media server.) I have been waiting very impatiently for this generation of Mini 🙂 Excellent video as always!

M4PRO 12 core , 64gig, 4TB is £3200. That best reflects my MacBook Pro M1Pro that cost £4000. I'm really impressed with the specs available on this thing. I'm not over worried about heat performance either given that I haven't heard the fans in this MacBook Pro more than once when was exporting a audio project and a screen flow project at the same time.

Technically you can , but it is not a straight forward process, you have to disassemble the imac ,remove the logic board and components then install a driver board to it's display in order to convert it to a standalone display.

Honestly external ssd storage might be viable with this M4 Pro Mac. Saying this is rated for 120 Gbps vs 40 Gbps this would mean we would have roughly 3x faster speeds. So this is hitting a little above PCIE 4.0 SSD’s which are quite a bit faster than regular Mac ssd memory.

Assuming that the M4 Max keeps the existing M4 trend, the line up looks much better than the previous M series especially the M3. The M3 added a lot of great stuff and performance, but the memory bandwidth and options were a mess. The M4 has a nice memory bandwidth bump and RAM options that are not bad. I think misses were not having 6P/4E or 6E option and 48GB to 64GB RAM options. If the M4 had RAM options of the M4 Pro and the M4 Pro were bumped a bit, I think the line up would be even more attractive. M4 Pro finally feels like a chip in the middle of the line up. The specs were way off with the M1 Pro and M2 Pro compared to their Max counterparts and the M3 was better except the memory bandwidth was downgraded to 150GB/s and the RAM options were perplexing. The M4 Pro memory bandwidth jumps to 273GB/s which is is the fastest in the Pro line up. I think the only real miss for the M4 Pro is not having AV1 encoding as it would have made a nice distinction between the M4 and the M4 Pro given the Pro is aimed more at content creators. I have to comment on my normal negatives. Apple purposefully cripling technology to create feature benefits is just bad, it is fustrating, and it’s sad to me that they do this to make different models more compelling rather than adding real features to make them more compelling. i.e. A cheap SD reader that doesn;t even offer 2 year old performance is not an impressive feature. There are two Thunderbolt controller so there should be 4 DisplayPort channels which means 4 monitors should be supported. Of course the monitor limitation is a limitation Apple is purposefully injecting into their prodiucts given that DP 1.2 added support for Multi-Stream Transport (MST) in 2010 and Apple is still disabling that feature for marketing. This is worse than the missing Calculator in iPadOS. The missing calculator was likely developer and/or management arrogance and/or incompetence and the monitor issue is likely money driven. It likely costs Apple more to disable MST than it would to support it and if it was just a software issue, someone would have written something to enable MST, which is completely different than DisplayLink which also doesn;t work well on Macs, but works great on PCs. Also, as always their RAM and Storage prices are outrageous.

Been going back and forth on a Mac Mini M2 Pro vs a Studio M2 Max. I thought the new Mini M4 Pro would be an obvious slam dunk, but I'm not so sure. Yes the M4 chip is a huge improvement. But the new Mini has 16 GPU vs 30 for the older M2 Max. You get 24GB of memory vs 32 on the Studio. If you upgrade to 1TB of storage, the M4 Pro is $1599 and the Studio M2 Max is $2199. But if you're a photographer (like me) you will need a SDXC card reader for the Mini while the Studio comes with one. That's something I use a lot.

Many sample based VSTs like Keyscape or NI Kontakt need both a lot of RAM and storage. You would not be able to install anything on internal 256GB SSD. You would need at least 1 or 2TB external SSD. For a Windows PC, 64GB of RAM is only $100 and 2TB SSD is about $150-180. That would be standard configuration for music production on Windows. I don't remember when I had a PC with 256GB SSD. 10 years ago probably.
@BluestarferiesАй бұрын
@@FirstLast-nr6gf I never needed more than 16 on Apple silicon while using Kontakt, Specrasonics Libraries etc. I produce pop and not orchestras in which 64GB would come in handy. For any other genre 16 is the sweet spot!

I wouldn't be interested if it still has the slow ssd mine currently has (about 1400-1500 mbps sequential read/write). M3 Macbook airs did have 128Gb nands so I'm optimistic. Looking for a teardown video showing if Mac Mini M4 can be upgraded with more RAM and bigger internal SSD? Sure the base is cheap but if everything is soldered (as it sometimes has been in the past) then I would wait for prices to come down or look at used in a year or so. So far all I see are AI or stock image videos... pretty pictures and the official specs I could easily get from Apple, not much with an actual M4 mini tested for benchmark or any indication of upgrade after purchase.
