Thank you for the "All M-series Chip" performance chart, especially the one where they're ranked by performance. Really shows where my M1 Max is sitting relative to everything else. I'm still extremely happy with it for what I anticipate doing with it, so I imagine I'll keep it until the M5 or M6 come out but I appreciate you showing it like that. Dropping that much $$ on the M1 Max was a leap of faith for me at the time and while it's not the top of the chart any more, happy to know it's still a good buy.

This month I bought 16 inch MBP M1 Pro 16 512 for 1500, and I’m so happy with it, since blender has support for metal technology- render power is sufficient enough for me and cpu performance is on par with my pc with Intel 12700, while doing all that on a battery with no sweat. IMO the RAM upgrade should be a priority over the storage and beefier M4 Pro. They actually made it a bit cheaper to double up to 48GB, that it used to be for the 32/36 of the older generations. So even though you're still being robbed in broad daylight, it's a bit better value this time around.

Do you think the MacBook m4 pro chip with 14 cpu/20 gpu with 48 gb of ram is worth getting over an m3 max chip with 14/30 & 36 ram for video editing? The m3 max chips seems to heat up a little bit. Thank you! ☺️🙏🏼
@goinginzane
@goinginzane 3 ай бұрын
@JustineCooksVegan for video editing performance, the GPU is usually the most important factor. The M4 Pro GPUs didn't seem to get that much of a performance upgrade this generation, so pretty good chance the M3 Max will still outperform the M4 Pro by a healthy margin and thus will probably do better during most editing scenarios.
@etherealbolweevil6268
@etherealbolweevil6268 3 ай бұрын
I see the RAM being fabricated directly on the processor chip, so more RAM is a new chip design and new manufacturing run with all the associated costs (fewer CPU chips per wafer etc.). This seems a much more expensive thing than the old days with an external SIMM option and likely to plateau due to die size and chip density limitations. I can see more memory moving into the CPU / GPU components rather than sitting as a discrete block on the chip. I am, historically, usually wrong on such things.
@JustineCooksVegan
@JustineCooksVegan 3 ай бұрын
@@goinginzane thanks for the info! So you think 30 GPU on the m3 max is going to make a different compared to the 20 GPU on m4 pro chip? Please, please, do a comparison of M4 with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. Last time, you compared M3 with M2, but not with M1. There are lots of people out there (including me) that are still rocking MBPs with M1 chips and for most of us those are still perfectly adequate, but if M4 really is so much better, it will be a good consideration towards an upgrade to M4.

Agreed. I'd like to know exactly where & when having more GPU cores is worth having if you don't play games on Macs. I've got the extra GPU cores on my M1 Max Studio but my i9 Windows PC with an RTX 4080 GPU can render in a couple of minutes what takes 15 minutes on my Studio.

@michvod

@@alphaarchive5262 M1 is perfect for probably 80-90% of all people, but I am creative content creator and need that extra "oomph" sometimes. For example, for video export and editing, and photo noise reduction and upscaling. If it takes now 10 seconds to do a task, and it will take 3 seconds on M4, then that saves me lots of time - instead of doing one thing for 3 hours, you can get it done in just 1, and those hours quickly add up :) Also, one more thing, the SSD in M1 MBPs were blazing fast by the 2021 standards, but now you can get a 1TB SSD for less than $100 that is twice as fast as the one in M1. So would be also interesting to compare the SSD speeds between generations.

I am so annoyed by the "faster" term being applied to something that is multiplicative. The term for the 2.5x multiplier would be 2.5 times as fast, not faster. Faster implies that the end result is actually 3.5 times as fast: 1x base speed + 2.5x faster = 3.5 times as fast. Yes, I am being pedantic, but I find it annoying that Apple uses this misleading term.

@@rightwingsafetysquad9872 Agreed. The competition is catching up. Still mind blowing what it can do where as on a PC, you need watercooling. I wonder if anyone has tried to overclock any of the recent apple stuff?
@rightwingsafetysquad9872
@rightwingsafetysquad9872 3 ай бұрын
@@MickeyMishra You never need water cooling to do anything on a PC. Water cooling in desktop PCs exists for 2 reasons. First, it is less likely to get damaged in shipping because the weight is distributed across more mounting points than large air coolers. Second, aesthetics and bragging rights. It is never actually about cooling ability compared to air. Comparing desktop PC hardware and Apple hardware on efficiency is not entirely fair. They choose to target different points on the efficiency curve. Intel targets absolute performance, AMD dials it back like 5% to recover 20% of energy usage, and Apple throttles like 20% to save 50% on energy. You get a much more direct comparison by comparing efficiency in laptops. There Apple has barely improved at all since M1, AMD has made slow but significant progress, and Intel has made massive progress. They are all very close now. Intel has the lead in active use battery life normalized by battery capacity, but is the slowest while doing so. When measuring by Geekbench score per Watt, Apple still has the lead, but it is very small. In data centers water cooling helps increase density, but you still need to put radiators somewhere. Net density stays the same, but server room density in isolation increases.

I would like your opinion on the configurations, for example: you can't get 64GB of memory on the pro or the "binned" max, you have to select the full 40 core max to get the 64GB upgrade. Also you can get the pro with 48GB of memory, but if you then upgrade to the binned M4 Max the memory goes DOWN to 36GB, for MORE money. It seems these M4 are very expensive and they need the margins on these upgrades to make up for the extra costs, what do you think?

This is a crazy good upgrade. I think I’ll stick with my M1 Pro. I do notice slipping render speeds if I’m adding some extra noise reduction but it’s rare I do noise reduction work. When I’m ready it’s nice to know this is available. Cyberpunk on the Mac…I tried it with game porting toolkit. Worked decent. Is this the first aaa port?

Im SOOO disappointed. I was forced into upgrading from my M1 Pro to M3 Pro, not knowing the decrease in memory bandwidth or less performance cores, now with M4 specs looking so good I feel like I paid for an inferior computer.

@@sunthroughtheblinds haha yeah, by my own doing :( I completely flooded my M1 with coffee and I needed a machine for 3 days later to perform at a show. Where I live in Canada prevented me from getting it fixed in time so I had to buy another while AppleCare fixed my M1. Only place was a local shop here called Staples. So I ‘forced’ myself to “upgrade” which wasn’t much of an upgrade. M3 lowered memory bandwidth and P cores directly affecting what I do. Now, perhaps the M3 outshine the M1 for most things, I’ve noticed longer render times with it.

I remember getting excited when I could afford going from 4K RAM to 8K. Good review Luke. The M4 looks to be a significant leap. Now to decide between the Mini and MacBook. I still enjoy and use my iPad Pro 5th Gen. I haven’t had a Mac laptop since my ClamShell Mac laptop. I wrote a screenplay on it.

The good news for me is that the M1 and M2 MBP are going to be cheaper. So I might look into getting one of those instead. Unless I opt for the regular M4.

Heavily tempted to upgrade from my M2 Pro 16" to an M4 Pro, but I think I'd hold off for the M5 as I heard that has the redesign. But have to see how these perform, they look awesome and the nice upgrade in base RAM is nice.

I really like the present overall design…if they do change it for the worse with M5, I will then definitely grab an M4Pro or M4Max next year (new or refurb). I did the same when the last of the non-Retina 2012 MBPs was still sold into 2013. That machine is still going strong, although my main machines are now an M1Pro 16” and a M2 Air.

@ Yeah I do as well, I heard it’s basically the same just its thinner, still keeping all the ports and the overall design language just won’t be as chunky. But yeah if there’s any issues with the design or it overheats etc, I’d probably pick up a M4 Max as they’ll come down in price. But for now as we’re probably a year away from a design change I’m happy to hold off.

Just ordered the Apple MacBook M4 Max chip with 16‑core CPU, 40‑core GPU and 16‑core Neural Engine, 128GB unified memory, 4TB SSD storage. It's a 5 year investment, Upgrading from the late 2021 Apple MacBook M1 Max, 64GB, 4TB which is now 3 years old, still runs great. You only live once so why the hell not :-)

Thanks for the first review! Do you think the MacBook m4 pro chip with 14 cpu/20 gpu with 48 gb of ram is worth getting over an m3 max chip with 14/30 & 36 ram for long form video editing? The m3 max chips seems to heat up a little bit. Thank you! ☺️🙏🏼

Nice! The Pro is a real Pro again, and the regular M4 is really impressive as well. I'm currently using an M3 Max, which is a real upgrade compared to the M3 Pro. For most people or my personal use. I'd consider a refurbished M1 Pro, M2 Pro, or now the regular M4. Even for my most challenging tasks, I'd have no need for the M4 Pro, since I don't need massive GPU power. But in terms of storage, I agree: starting with 512 GB is a shame, this needs to change.

Didn’t read all the comments, but HUGE differences between the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips is that the M4 Pro chips have 1 Video Encoder Engine and 1 ProRes Encoder/Decoder Engine while the M4 Max has 2 Video Encoder Engines and 2 ProRes Encoder/Decoder Engines! Interesting though, both chips only have 1 Video Decoder Engine. I can’t wait to see the comparisons that you guys come up with to test these two variants. Me personally, I’m waiting on the M5 chips. I thought I read somewhere that the MBPs will have a slight re-design when that chip comes out…
