Thank you for the "All M-series Chip" performance chart, especially the one where they're ranked by performance. Really shows where my M1 Max is sitting relative to everything else. I'm still extremely happy with it for what I anticipate doing with it, so I imagine I'll keep it until the M5 or M6 come out but I appreciate you showing it like that. Dropping that much $$ on the M1 Max was a leap of faith for me at the time and while it's not the top of the chart any more, happy to know it's still a good buy.

@@zh9732 Apple's 8ish year self imposed limit on operating system support is something of an issue with the more powerful old machines which are still fully competent, but not supported. Yes there are some workarounds, but Apple users don't usually enjoy workarounds and the endless problems.

Please, please, do a comparison of M4 with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. Last time, you compared M3 with M2, but not with M1. There are lots of people out there (including me) that are still rocking MBPs with M1 chips and for most of us those are still perfectly adequate, but if M4 really is so much better, it will be a good consideration towards an upgrade to M4.

@michvod

@@alphaarchive5262 M1 is perfect for probably 80-90% of all people, but I am creative content creator and need that extra "oomph" sometimes. For example, for video export and editing, and photo noise reduction and upscaling. If it takes now 10 seconds to do a task, and it will take 3 seconds on M4, then that saves me lots of time - instead of doing one thing for 3 hours, you can get it done in just 1, and those hours quickly add up :) Also, one more thing, the SSD in M1 MBPs were blazing fast by the 2021 standards, but now you can get a 1TB SSD for less than $100 that is twice as fast as the one in M1. So would be also interesting to compare the SSD speeds between generations.

IMO the RAM upgrade should be a priority over the storage and beefier M4 Pro. They actually made it a bit cheaper to double up to 48GB, that it used to be for the 32/36 of the older generations. So even though you're still being robbed in broad daylight, it's a bit better value this time around.

Do you think the MacBook m4 pro chip with 14 cpu/20 gpu with 48 gb of ram is worth getting over an m3 max chip with 14/30 & 36 ram for video editing? The m3 max chips seems to heat up a little bit. Thank you! ☺️🙏🏼
@goinginzane
@goinginzane 17 сағат бұрын
@JustineCooksVegan for video editing performance, the GPU is usually the most important factor. The M4 Pro GPUs didn't seem to get that much of a performance upgrade this generation, so pretty good chance the M3 Max will still outperform the M4 Pro by a healthy margin and thus will probably do better during most editing scenarios.

I see the RAM being fabricated directly on the processor chip, so more RAM is a new chip design and new manufacturing run with all the associated costs (fewer CPU chips per wafer etc.). This seems a much more expensive thing than the old days with an external SIMM option and likely to plateau due to die size and chip density limitations. I can see more memory moving into the CPU / GPU components rather than sitting as a discrete block on the chip. I am, historically, usually wrong on such things.

@@goinginzane thanks for the info! So you think 30 GPU on the m3 max is going to make a different compared to the 20 GPU on m4 pro chip? I am so annoyed by the "faster" term being applied to something that is multiplicative. The term for the 2.5x multiplier would be 2.5 times as fast, not faster. Faster implies that the end result is actually 3.5 times as fast: 1x base speed + 2.5x faster = 3.5 times as fast. Yes, I am being pedantic, but I find it annoying that Apple uses this misleading term.

I would like your opinion on the configurations, for example: you can't get 64GB of memory on the pro or the "binned" max, you have to select the full 40 core max to get the 64GB upgrade. Also you can get the pro with 48GB of memory, but if you then upgrade to the binned M4 Max the memory goes DOWN to 36GB, for MORE money. It seems these M4 are very expensive and they need the margins on these upgrades to make up for the extra costs, what do you think?

I mean, I’m a devops engineer and my employer gave me a 16 inch Macbook Pro with M3 Max, 2 TB storage and 64 GB RAM that costs more than a decent second hand car and the most demanding tasks I ever have it do is compiling code. I don’t use more than 12 GB of RAM, and after 9 months of use, the SDD still has 1.7 TB of space. And who is going to render or export 8k movies on a small 16 inch screen?

Thanks for the first review! Do you think the MacBook m4 pro chip with 14 cpu/20 gpu with 48 gb of ram is worth getting over an m3 max chip with 14/30 & 36 ram for long form video editing? The m3 max chips seems to heat up a little bit. Thank you! ☺️🙏🏼

This is a crazy good upgrade. I think I’ll stick with my M1 Pro. I do notice slipping render speeds if I’m adding some extra noise reduction but it’s rare I do noise reduction work. When I’m ready it’s nice to know this is available. Cyberpunk on the Mac…I tried it with game porting toolkit. Worked decent. Is this the first aaa port?

The Pro may not be the sweet spot over the binned MAX if you want faster core clocks, added GPU, and video decoders etc. Seems logical on the surface, but would really depend on your usage.

I have a request for your future videos. I am planning to upgrade to M4 14 inch and my main priority will be battery life because i am always on the go (rarely use demanding tasks). Can you please do a real world battery life comparison between the base M4, and the binned M4 pro, and the full M4 pro? Depending on this real world battery i will do my purchase. If there is no significant hit on battery life i will go with the higher models but if battery takes a hit i will keep the base one.

The base model 16" M4 pro seems like a much better value than the 16" base max if you dont need the extra gpu cores. 48 gb of ram standard on the pro? You can upgrade to a 1tb and save $400 bucks at the cost of some gpu cores. This is definitely the model I'd go with personally, if my M1 max wasn't still going flawlessly strong.

Hey Luke, thank you voor your quick indepth explanation of wrat is to be expected. I was wondering what your take is on the difference between the base binnen M4 pro and the full M4 pro. Do you think the faster chip and the 1TB storage is worth $400? Personally I am tepted at the M4 Pro line as in gets the Thunderbolt 5 connecties which Will go a long way for future proofing.

Tbh with the core configuration remaining the same, I am very happy that I went for the M3 Max last year! For my workload the core count is much more important than the core speed, so there is no real reason to upgrade.

I really like the present overall design…if they do change it for the worse with M5, I will then definitely grab an M4Pro or M4Max next year (new or refurb). I did the same when the last of the non-Retina 2012 MBPs was still sold into 2013. That machine is still going strong, although my main machines are now an M1Pro 16” and a M2 Air.

@ Yeah I do as well, I heard it’s basically the same just its thinner, still keeping all the ports and the overall design language just won’t be as chunky. But yeah if there’s any issues with the design or it overheats etc, I’d probably pick up a M4 Max as they’ll come down in price. But for now as we’re probably a year away from a design change I’m happy to hold off.

estimated M4 Ultra multi score: 38967, 2.1x M2 ultra, 1.8x m1 ultra, that is if the spec is 16+8=24 cpu cores as in relation to m1/m2 relative scores of ultra to max they give around 50% performance increase if the cores are 18+8=26 then the estimation would be around 42k multi-core score

I'm happy they upgraded the base RAM (and I suspect "Apple Intelligence" is the reason why), but I agree the base storage is still criminally low. Either up it or incorporate an m.2 slot so we can upgrade ourselves down the line. I am so excited for the option for an anti-glare display! It's the one thing that bothers me the most about using my M1 Air. Well, other than the pitiful 2 USB C ports both on the same side of the device...

Reasonably speaking this looks about 2x as fast as my M1 Max. I'm managing to get by with that, running Windows and MacOS simultaneously in 4K, with demanding apps on both sides... I could use the extra power but not sure I'm *quite* ready to drop another $5k on an upgrade just yet.
