the main reason for drop in price is TAX reduction due to engine size falling below 1.5L . In India if a car has more than 1.5L diesel (regardless of size) the tax is 48% but the moment it reduced below 1.5L the tax for sub 4 metre car (Thar, Nexon diesel etc) is 31% and for above 4 metre car (creta diesel, seltos diesel, carens diesel etc) is 45%. Edit:- The 4x2 instead of 4x4 also greatly reduces the price. Almost about same as this tax reduction due smaller engine. (Thar 2.0 petrol LX automatic AWD model is 2 lakh more expensive than Thar 2.0 petrol LX automatic RWD)

I chose the xuv300 to the Thar at close to 18 lakhs on road, because the xuv is a full family car with doors, creature comforts, 5* safety features and space for 5. The thar will never be able to replace a car like the xuv300,creta,Breeza etc. And even if it does it will always be a compromise. A normal 4 door is utility that cannot be replaced by the thar. However an unmarried person or just married couple can buy one as their primary car, but for others it will have to be a second car just for the oomph, be it a 4x4 or just a rear wheel drive. Also a ton of youngsters I have met lately don't consider car ownership, property ownership a priority.

Mahindra claims that Thar 2WD is more lifestyle oriented so if you remove the 4x4 from Thar at least add an arm rest, a fabric roof like other lifestyle cars. And considering the fact that they are going to increase the prices in the future, there is still no grab handles in the 3 door Thar.

Best option/Move by Mahindra would be giving 4x4 option in 1.5Lt Diesel engine as it will then have both good mileage and 4x4 capabilities (since torque already is 300Nm). It will also be cheaper than the current 4x4 diesel.

Well in the case of 4*2 Nexon Diesel can perform as equal to Thar. Remember Nexon has the highest ground Clearance in Sub 4 meter and a very good design.

Jimmy 5 door 4x2 will deliver a knockout punch to the thar. IMO the 5 door Jimmy 4x2 will be much cheaper than this and the 5 door Jimmy 4x4 will be priced at par with this 4x2 Thar. Only advantage of the Thar is its size and road presence.

As per my personal experience, i just want warn all the viewer who is willing to buy its. Just be sure this is car is build for made for only two person, because back seat are very much uncomfortable like hell. So buy it only if you wanna enjoy the road presence ! No body talks how uncomfortable it's back seat are. If you are for long tour , go with only two person. Make sure you ride yourself to enjoy it. And one of your friend besides you.
