Bro, I almost cried. My #1 favourite series of the Mario franchise is making a return. The glorious battle system is still here and the new artstyle captures the "cartoony" nature of this series. Also, not only are there unique characters but there are even variants of enemies from past games. Which means the continuity established in the first 4 games is still intact. I have never felt SOO excited in quite a while.

The big thing isn’t that there’s a new M&L, it’s that it doesn’t look like shit. This is the first NEW Mario RPG since Paper Jam, and that one was bland as all hell. Mario RPG and TTYD can get away with being good because they’re remakes of old games. This is Nintendo outright saying we’re making a new Mario RPG and we’re not going to constrain ourselves to bullshit limitations like we’ve done since Sticker Star.

It's both because somehow I'm in the minority with this but as bland & the worst in the series Paper Jam is, it's still a good game w/ solid gameplay, great writing & whatnot. That said, it's hard to screw up a Mario & Luigi to a level like Sticker Star or Color Splash imo, so this feels like a godsend on multiple levels

The fact the series is now shown to not be dead is so relieving. Paper Mario was gonna continue regardless, and Super Mario RPG was only ever one game, but M&L, with the studio closing, could’ve easily been left in the dust. Especially since Nintendo has a lot of RPGs that have gotten more popular in recent years (Xenoblade and Fire Emblem). It’s too bad they didn’t save AlphaDream though. I guess it’s cheaper not to, but if they’re still interested in making M&L games, that means pulling an existing team away from something else. And I didn’t think it would have enough priority to do that.

It's definitely a relief to know those "restrictions" don't apply to this game. It was honestly a little ambiguous after Paper Jam whether or not Mario&Luigi was getting hit with the ban hammer too. Yes, the BIS remake's side story had new villains, but when interviewed there was this really odd insistence among the developers that the BFF were not a new species at all and that they're actually the same race as *Midbus* of all characters despite them looking nothing alike and nothing of the likes being mentioned in the actual game. That just reeked of loopholing a "You can only use races that were already in the original game!" kind of mandate. Good riddance.
