My father owns one, we both have driven it for some time now… it’s truly a drivers car, very efficient, fast, wonderful steering. No issuses so far, also driving 296gtb… Ferrari is more like an art, theatre, great exhaust, crazy fast, but McLaren is a true drivers car… pure driving

Over here some mates were comparing a 765 LT to a Ferrari Roma, and I don't know how that argument ended because I am not in cadre of owning multiple > 100.000 € vehicles and then listing opinions on them: I just appreciate automotive excellence, albeit from afar.

We rented an Artura *hardtop in Abu Dhabi and the exact same thing happens.. shift on red line caused a power train and ESC code that kept the car in limp mode. The rental company didnt charge us anything and said it was a common code for the car and they knew how to reset it.

Why wouldn't they just code the car to reject the shift when the system arrives at that instant of operation. It would seem they are well aware of the fault. Otherwise, the fail-safe wouldn't be there.🤔

​@@need4speed290 had something similar happen in a camry while travelling cross country, i floored the pedal when ever i went for an overtake expecting a kickdown, the damn thing stayed in high gear while the other car was approaching at deadly speed, damn thing was so scary i had to manually disable overdrive when ever i wanted to go for an overtake. This is why i always prefer manuals.

I was on my way to my local McLaren showroom to place an order, until your review regarding the loss of power. As a result, Rory, I’m no longer going to trade in my 2002 Vauxhall Corsa Which may only be marginally slower despite the go faster stripe for the new Artura Spider as the old girl is proving to be more reliable. LOL… Great review as usual, I just hope McLaren can sort out the high-speed gear change issue.

Great video. I often think about switching from my 3RS to a McLaren, but every time I chat with people/pro drivers about this at a Silverstone track day, they simply say don’t, the McLaren will always let you down and you’ll need a trailer to get you home.

aswell as lamborghini and porsche, they drag on certain models also. how many aventadors or huracans has their been?!. theyve been doing it for years also! But mclaren have to sort their bloody reliabilty issues out! thats the main issue that that brand has.

As a McLaren owner, they are decently reliable now. The issue is that their computer systems seem to be sensitive and flag the most minuscule changes, because once you restart the car 99% of the time the issues disappear. I think there is too much precaution built into the electronic management systems. Otherwise they are some of the most advanced lightweight cars on the road today.

I feel as if McLaren sub-contracted out the building of the Artura to Tesla Motors... it would answer so, so many things.

Oh- I know what happened to the car: before it shifts, it must cut power via the ignition system- like retarting the spark and ignition system before it shifts- but with the shifts being so quick, and engine at 8500 rpm, it didnt have enough time to step it down a couple of notches before it could engage gear- like any superbike wouldnt shift up or down if u didnt slightly twist back the throttle if ur not using the quickshifter- so basically, the quickshifter module would not allow a shift becoz the engine was still accelerating in spite of the retardation- maybe it was still under boost or waistgate didnt release especially since I doubt that the throttle valves close between shifts- no fault of the car: Maybe what McLaren ought to do is activate both the "quickshifter" and energy regeneration-systems when shifting above, say 7600rpm even by 30% - the latter just to take the "froth off the top of the glass" if you will- and then maybe it would allow the system to keep the throttle valves open, not release all that precious boost pressure its built up whilst braking the crank shaft so the shifts can engage- then soon as the clutches are activated, the regen system deactivates- and goes like a bat- Ahhhh, so- for the brilliance of my awsomeness: can MERLIN pls do a custom paint job for me on the Artura Spider: how about a candy version of this McLaren Orange, staggered wheels- dark golden orange wheels, interior and brake callipers and front and side vents.

No the issue is he changed up at the exact moment it hit rev limited and the car just went into a limp mode. If it happened on the outside lane of a motorway it'll have just coasted as it did here and you can pull off in to a lay by or the next junction safely.. like he said the car pretty much fixed itself after turning it off and on and after a little while when the car realises its actually okay it gave him full power again. I agree it shouldn't happen, but it's really not THAT big of a deal

More complexity = MORE things that can go WRONG on this "Super Sports Car." From purely an aesthetic perspective: The black roof (body color, not possible) seems to suggest a dark body color may look the best. Unless you want a Two-Tone color appearance. As for the wheels, I like the Diamond-Cut silver look rims. I am so sick and tired of the all-black wheels look. What is the point of a nice wheel design if you can't even see them with all-black wheels? Next order of business: McLaren...please improve the interior. Make the interior one that is worthy of a car at this price range. The simple, spartan interior might be okay if the MSRP was 100k less. But not at this asking price.

I've had the 650S spider for 6 year due to Covid. End of warranty rectificetions cost them a fortune. Seat motors, doors locks radio module to mention a few! Service by McLaren B'ham, not the easiest to arrange or quickest due parts & Labour availability! Last service & M.O.T. It/I had broken Suspension unit Coil spring? Not done 16K miles! I bought the cars as a 62nd B'day present. So not exactly a racing driver! They invited me the 720Launch, the 720Spider Launch. Not impressed, just blown away by the Spider. So, start saving, they brought the GT. I test drove it but did not like being cooked up inside it. Then the 765LT, too rich for my blood. Then the Artura. I'd already bought a BMW i8 Roadster by then as a company car. Absolutely awesome, looking & driving! People would not & could believe the looks & performance of a 1/2 price the McLaren! For what was a battery box & a Mini Cooper engine! I'd slept in it if I could. Too many miles & the need to go EV. Disappointed with the Artura after seeing the Ferrari 296 GTB. I think the 720s is the best looking of any car by far! The comfort entry, easier ingress egress & the flip down rev counter made different but 70bhp up from my 650! Then they bring out the 750! Just 30 more BHP? Now the Artura Spider? It looks like an inferior copy of the Lotus Imira! Saving & Pending my hard earnt on a Artura Spider to people think it's only a Lotus??? To make matters worse McLaren, Rolls Royce B'ham has taken on the Lotus dealership! Diversity, dilution or disillusion? Think I'll possibly stick with brand until the summer is over & the 720S Spider, drops in price as the others find their place in the market. A Good car/brand but not a great one! Except the £1/2Million plus cars!

This is not entirely true. With the right paddle you can also downshift. The two paddles are linked. You only have to push it forward.

Very surprising that a car with 8 motors for the automatic roof had a weird electrical problem when trying to shift as you approach redline. (Which is like, exactly what you are supposed to do)

It's wild, my 2019 Mazda3 hatch awd with 186hp 186 tq never had that issue when I change gear near or at redline with it's automatic. My 2000 Honda Civic Si with the B16A2 engine lived at 8000 rpm when I bought it new. I was 19 with a manual and 8000rpm to play with, better believe I'm using all 8000 or 8200 fuel cut off. That car is still running 24 years later. My friend who I sold it to, sold it to another friend of ours, and that friend sold it to his friend, and the owner happens to work at the casino with the first friend I sold it to.

Biggest sales issue with Artura isn’t the reliability niggles which all us current owners have become accustomed too and recognise are often blown out of proportion. No, the biggest issue is how to get me to swap my 570 spider - a car that genuinely does everything I need, still has dramatic looks, aesthetics and performance- to take a £130k hit to get into a car which , when sat next to each other is hard to tell apart. Literally I parked next to one last week and my wife didn’t know which was ours…. 🤪

Isn’t incremental change EXACTLY what McLaren is known for? The 720s came out almost 8 years ago and all they’ve really done is rework the powertrain and make minor changes the chassis. They aren’t as “evolutionary” as Porsche with the 911, but they are pretty conservative

Maybe the issue is smashing it into the limiter as you upchange. Have you tried it on any other cars to see what they do as presumably it’s over-rev protection. This is quite possibly a driving error not a car issue.

If you make a bad gear shift the car should simply wait until it's safe to shift or just beap at you or something like my is300. Not sure i'm buying what mclaren is saying, seems like theyre putting the blame on you.

Hmm, perhaps the micro chip in the car thought that you were shifting down a gear, not up a gear having accelerated near the rev limiter.

Isn't shifting at the redline exactly what you want to do? If it can't do it, it just has to ignore the request, not have a tantrum and turn off.
