The Nazca Lines are one of the world’s most famous ancient enigmas, a collection of giant geoglyphs and they’re located in the Peruvian coastal plain, around 250 miles south of Lima, Peru.
They were created between 500 BC and 500 AD and made by people making depressions or shallow incisions in the desert floor, removing pebbles and leaving differently-coloured dirt exposed.
In November 2019, a research group at Yamagata University announced the discovery of 143 new geoglyphs and in December 2022, they announced 168 more, and this is all with the help of AI technology.
Some have said they were ceremonial walkways and that they had religious symbolism, others have said they’re an astronomical calendar, and yes some believe they are landing pads for UFOs.
This week, Masato Sakai, one of the Yamagata University researchers who has been working to find new geoglyphs, has had his say, offering a new interpretation. Watch this video to learn more and also to see a gallery of new geoglyph discoveries since 2019.

The intersecting straight lines are far more mysterious than the glyphs. They are DEFINITELY NOT roadways or paths and they don't seem at all like water channels. Please explore the straight lines and geometric plateaus further Ancient Architects. You will be surprised.

Seems very viable that one culture could have put them there for a practical reason and a later culture came along and saw them there and in awe assumed they must be made by the gods and as a result made their own to communicate back with the gods. Very nice ideas all around!

There are some cultures who launch hot air floats, into the sky, to honor community members who have passed on. Perhaps the local Nazca inhabitants did the same and created the ground images for their sky-bound ancestors to look at much in the way we’ve always put works of art on walls and floors.

Sage Wall ? Tripped on to the 'Wandering Wolf' webpage yesterday. He believes he has discovered a 'new' megalithic site (Sage Wall at Sage Mountain Centre, Montana) complete with remnants of numerous walls etc. Quite spectacular. and well worth viewing. Don't know personally if they truly are what he claims or if they are simply very unusual rock formation. Has anyone else looked into the matter ? Would be well worth some coverage by 'Ancient Architects'.

In the 60th I flew over the Nazca lines to take pictures in a piper aircraft. At that time Maria Reiche was living in the pampa on her own. Suddenly we had to make an emergency landing so the pilot found a good looking Nazca line and we landed and almost crashed. The surface was very bumpy and full of stones. We had to walk two hours to find a guardian who could bring us to Nazca in a 100 years old car. Next day we could fix the plane and had an even more dangerous take off. But he did it, the old Piper and we returned safe to Lima. I think we are the the only flying objects ever landed in Nazca. And that’s a miracle an sich

There is much more to the story, it includes an American from Texas who paid for the operation, but it would make the story very long. One thing I will tell you, when we safely landed on one of the lines in the middle of the pampa, this American said “where can a make a phone call” Only people knowing the site can understand how funny stupid this was, I am 80 now but never forget this expedition. Fortunately my husband was send to Peru, a country I had no idea of but soon I found out about its history and decided to pick up my first love. So I started to study archeology at the university in Lima and fell in love with the beauty of pre Colombian history, the people and their culture, and of course the incredible countryside. When my husband was transferred to another country I stayed in Lima for 17 years!!!! Thinking about how much of these peoples time was devoted to survival makes me wonder how much time could they afford in making these. They had to spend a great deal of time based on the size. They had to be very important otherwise why make them. The wide straight lines that go through the designs look to be made by a later group of people and they either didn't see the designs or they didn't care if they were damaged.

3:15. I'd always been of the view that they were used by ancient humans in conjunction with Mirages... They're located in the perfect geographical terrain for it. As to whether there's more complex symbolism associated with them, it could be possible over time, if they were using them as markers of seasonal phenomenon/changes, that they could have tailored the symbols that appeared in the sky during the sky to match the seasonal phenomenon/patterns that occurred on the ground. E.g. The spider appearing as a mirage in the sky following atmospheric conditions that could result in perfect conditions for a boom in spider populations...etc...

A more recent show on USA tv showed the specifics about how the lines were used for navigation by showing the correlation between their location and what is found behind the hills on which the markings appear. Generally, they point to water or settlements with a few seeming to indicate areas for hunting (although that is not defensible due to a total lack of archeological evidence.

This is a fascinating and much anticipated update of previous work. I would like to suggest that there are three Cthulhu-like pictographs that could, if read in sequence, read woman, pregnant woman and pregnant woman giving birth. One can be sure that the nonsensical idea of the infamous Error von Dummkopf, that lines radiating from a head means space helmet, is pure bunkum. The book of EvD mentioned was my first introduction to the Nazca lines in junior high school. The fact that our even earlier ancestors made cave paintings that seem to record important facts of early life suggests that these markings reasonable could carry meaning. A rational alterternative, or additional, theory for some of the lines, especially the straight or curved ones, is that they might be similar to some patterns found in Britain that are theorized to be processional markers. There are a number of areas where stones in piles, rows or simple constructions have ritual meaning. Some people leave or take something like a pebble or coin with different reasons even today. I saw a few small piles of stones on a modern highway, and then observed one being made by the driver of a stalled car. I carry a triangular warning ⚠✨reflector [1 ft-30 cm tall] in my car so that I don't have to use stones and it is far more visible. Simple cairns can obviously have different meanings but location and culture can suggest possibilities. Thanks again, Matt, for an information packed and thought-provoking video!

They are much more scattered (except in a couple locations where they are totally ubiquitous) and in my opinion just as interesting and far more numerous than what can be found at Nazca/Palpa. There are geoglyphs all over South America but the biggest concentration is in the Atacama. Many of the geoglyphs I have found there using Gooogle Earth I have never seen pictured anywhere on the internet (and I have looked repeatedly), some are truly quite spectacular. Please comment about what can this location be? I see a weird structure with 3 dots on its top aligned like the orion's belt. 14°42'09"S 75°10'28"W

There's one form of human flight that, I believe, should be taken into consideration when trying to understand the Nazca lines: OBE's(Out Of Body Experiences) This may sound preposterous, especially to those who have never had one, but OBE's are more frequent than one might suspect, especially in situations where altered states of consciousness are involved---states that were almost certainly sought after in ancient Peruvian spiritual lore. Add to that the fact that in nearby Paracas many objects and textiles were discovered depicting people flying; one such textile comes to mind, which shows dozens of individuals in ceremonial outfits who seem to be in flight, their faces smiling in ecstasy; the textile is titled "Shamans in Flight" Coincidence....? In one of his early books, Robert Monroe points out that, when in an OBE, one has a tendency to follow straight lines, rivers, wires, plumbing ducts or canals. In my own (single)OBE, I found myself 'flying' up the street where I lived, for no apparent reason. So, who knows, maybe the Nazca lines were built to guide shamans on their OBE's, to help them contact the 'spirit' they need for some cure, say, follow the hummingbird line to trace out that Spirit's energy, or to commune with the 'Hummingbird God'. Same goes for the other great figures, the Monkey, the Spider, etc. Each one of them must've had its own set of values for the Nazca people. It sure helps that these figures were mainly composed of a single, uninterrupted line. Anyway, to me this makes more sense than as "landing guides for UFOs"...

well grounded hypotheses, no need for aliens😉 the ancients had so much more going for them than they're given credit for. thanks, Matt, for helping to keep it real!

Great video, thank you! I loved seeing the newly discovered glyphs!! I wonder who the artist was? Some look like a child drew (or a non-artist like myself!) yet include such intricate details. They are so delightful to see!

Thank you! I think this lines and pictures have nothing to do with anything that the modern man can imagine. One day all this will be understood and in that day many people will faint.

It seems pretty obvious it's about communication and not much different from why some schools and colleges put "their" letter or symbol on a nearby hillside. I'd also go with the theory that some of their gods took the form of birds, and that the valley floor symbols were to communicate with those gods. Though I don't know how many birds visit that arid corner of the continent, which may undermine that theory entirely.

It is very difficult to make out what the glyphs are from ground level though. Doesn’t seem like they’d be all that useful for navigation when it’s hard to tell what they are when standing there.

Beware of falling rocks. Eat at Joes. Lodging ahead. Geoglyphs of the modern era, ie road signs. But the huge drawings that can only be seen from the sky are as difficult to create as they are to explain.

The intersecting straight lines are far more mysterious than than the glyphs. They are DEFINITELY NOT roadways or paths. Please explore the straight lines and geometric plateaus further Ancient Architects. You will be surprised.

Wasn't it said in the chariots of the gods that people made the lines as a signal to their gods in the heavens? Not made by ancient aliens.....
