Could you just put the unit in the garage completely outside of the house?

You could but what would be the point anyways? Basement furnace rooms are also great to put in a power unit at, actually some people prefer to do that instead of the garage.

@@panasonicvac4036 I don't know why, but the position of that unit feels a bit on the cozy side, well, claustrophobic side, like freedom of movement is limited. Then again, it's sitting more or less inside the stairs. The last place we had was cramped, but in a different way being a split level, one part of the basement where the furnace, water heater and central tubing terminated, you had to duck as the bottom of the floor joists were probably 5 feet from the floor.
