Totally agree with your statement about hand finishing. I tried to put this argument on the table of Rolex vs. Grand Seiko feud. Of course, with no success at all. What a lot of Rolex enthusiasts seem to not understand is the huge difference between the real value of the two prices. On one side, as you pointed out, there's an industry putting out a million of well-built watches per year, nothing to say about that aspect, but still one million watches. It's something nearer to the Swatch category than high horology. It's a watch every 30 seconds 24/7 every single day in one year with no holydays or weekends... GS on the other end has a much, much lower output, of course with a lot of machine finishing, but a considerable amount of time spent in hand finishing and assembly, without even talking about the general quality of the finished product. Not because of exotic materials, or marketing campaigns (something totally unknown to the Japanese fellas), but only for the time spent in making the watch, GS should be considered quite a bargain for the price. Something Rolex is not. Yes, they are more prestigious, with more history and heritage, more desired, more trendy, and in this particular period still a pretty good investment (if you are so lucky to be able to buy one at retail). I like them too and I own one bought years ago when they were still "yess but meh". But quality wise, finishing wise, horologically wise, an absolute robbery to the customers. I talked about GS, but I could raise it up a notch and say the same thing about JLC or Breguet or many others.

Regarding hand finishing the movement: Bought an A. Lange 1815. Paid with a bank draft. Told the lady at the bank what it was for. Next time I went to the bank she wanted to see the watch. She was impressed, then I told her to turn it over. I got a Wow. She will probably be the only one. Small bank here. Nice people work there. Regarding a watch for the gym: Bought my first nice watch at an Army PX in Stuttgart, W. Germany in about 1971. Took it off and put it in a locker at the gym. Never saw it again. One of my first lessons about the Army. Haven’t been to a gym but once since then.

Seiko does have some watches that are overpriced, but their lower end stuff is priced well, and their high end stuff, like grand seiko or Hi-beat models are usually bargains for the amount of work that goes into them. I still don’t even like considering price into the equation for a discussion like this because like I said before price has nothing to do with quality. You can be critical of their pricing but again, the quality and research they do is another stratosphere compared to orient and citizen. I like those companies but come on, they’re not even close.

The price of the Ingenieur seems reasonable to me. I have a deposited in at a boutique for one. As for omega, the 300M is fine as is, it’s the bracelet that needs changed. I’d own at least two of them if I didn’t hate the bracelet so much.

The Ingenieur price is reasonable in a single way : it is the cheapest price to guaranty buyers that peasants won't be able to afford it. It is just a 8 k worth watch with a inflated price serving as a rejection factor to artificially reach exclusivity. It is just the 1970s RO move but 5 k cheaper to draw some market share from the in between of Rolex and AP/Patek.

Seamaster 2020 Tokyo Olympic version is amazing. Blue bezel white dial. Hands and hour markers change colour from black to blue in the reflection/glare. Only 3 on Chrono24 in the US at over 10k compared to the NTTD bond that has 65 for sale and still in AD for sale.

It is simply mind boggling that Omega don’t just taper the bracelet on the 300m diver and thus reduce the need for that ridiculously large clasp. That’s all they need to do and from what I’ve heard, it’s the one thing that 99% of owners want.

The logic of IWC is to offer an iconic Genta design for all those who can’t get a RO or Nautilus. That’s why the price can’t be low, it would not feel luxurious enough for the target audience. And of course, at the same time this makes a bigger profit.

I love to see the Omega Seamaster big triangle recreation for the 300 line faithful to the original of course with no faux patina that Omega loves so much. I even love to see the Speedmaster Mark 3 or aMark 4.5 autos make a return. I rather buy a IWC Ingenieur chronograph from the early 2000s for about 5k with those awesome chronograph pushers. Even the old 3 hander IWC Ingenieur is quite nice 👌 but dam I love so many vintage Omega designs..Way more than over modern Omega

Moser are mostly machine finished. They do have some hand finishing on the cases, but the movements are mostly machine finish. That being said they are quite nice to look at for machine finishing.

Well we have 4 generations of seamaster. 1993, 2006, 2012, 2018 (last one). Yeah so if there are to follow the timeline of last two we won’t see another one for another year or more. Plus neither Rolex or Tudor released anything significantly new in the field. It’s so overdue for a redesign, I hope they realize that traditionalism when it comes to that ugly bracelet is unnecessary. Speaking of Holy grail and Rolex. I would debate the statement that they are not close. Holy grail is a subjective thing from the begging and doesn’t include the brand which supplied movements to members of that trinity (JLC). When it comes to Rolex there is no other brand that gets perfect design better than them. Almost Every watch has perfect ergonomics, durability and look. While designs are simple that’s what makes them complicated. Plus no other brand is as desired.
