I remember as a child being told to clean my room, and taking everything out of drawers, closets and turning around to see my mother horrified at the mess. To my mom, cleaning meant a quick pick up… to me it meant aligning my markers in my desk, folding every item in my dresser… etc. It would take my hours, but I loved the end result. This would drive her nuts. My mother’s style of cleaning, surfaces clean and don’t look in the drawers. Ahhhhh

I am 100% a CRICKET! I thought you might put up a picture of me when you were describing a CRICKET! Total perfectionist here & find myself NOT doing something because I want it to be absolutely perfectly organized & put away. It can be paralyzing for any progress to happen! Even more so because I live with my husband & 14 yr old daughter who are absolutely NOT crickets!

👌Hi :) totally cricket too in the paperwork area :) since I discover this cricket category, I could understand how my brain works and needs and since i am learning habits that can help me :) I start to walk out more to let my crazy mind blows away and since I notice that I feel better , day after day :) and the days I do not go out many days, the overthinking craziness starts to come back.. ;) it is not an organisation tip at all ;) but if it can help the other tired crickets of their own extremism with their overthinking that sincerely made me even totally paralysed sometimes and even blocked me for evolving in the new dream work path and since i noticed how my brain works, i discover that some habits totally helps me and had impact on my ability to face and do :). Since I move and go out more, walking, cycling, breathing, doing concrete things, gardening, or even just going to the recycling point in the next corner, (as in france we have recycling point on the street sometimes for area and not in each house :) it allows the mental to breath and stop, it helps me to survive 😅 after the physical movement, I feel fresher and more energy to face the pile, as I come back with the positive effect of feeling to have accomplish something :) it can be other manual physical activity, cooking, repairing the clothes etc, depending on each one ability and facilities of course, so then I use that distance taken to dive directly with what stressed me before :) it really helps me to disconnect the mind and use our perfectionism :) to avoid the overthinking that blocks me before.. to turn it into a good thing ;) finally :) we can do it ! :) then i am not on ritual habit.. but I notice to do it more helps me to balance my mind, to let go a bit the overthink and to do more after a break as before I could even block on a task or hide it, and feel not to take a break until i did not find a way to organise this work project , over categorising ideas.. etc :) we can do it too, courage to all crickets and everyone of course :)

@@queenofputrescence5167 This is definitely why the whole Swedish death cleaning thing has caught on. I told my parents, who have a lot of stuff, that when I become responsible for that stuff it’s going in the trash. I will choose a few items that are truly meaningful, that I know they love very much, and that I cherish. But the rest of it is goes. I didn’t say this quite as harsh as the way it sounded when I just wrote this. LOL but it helped, because they have since been motivated to start getting rid of things they don’t need or use anymore.

My dad's a cricket and has always had "death piles" of paper (yes, it's exactly what it sounds like - he even had a comic strip taped to his bathroom mirror for a long time that basically poked fun at that exact thing - the comic called it the "dining room table system", and I had crossed out "dining room" and written "kitchen"; my dad was the one who told me to tape it to the mirror, just to be clear), and back when I was in 12th grade he actually put one of my school essays in it (I think I had set it on the kitchen table or something like that); a week or two later, when I went looking for it but couldn't find it anywhere (I knew I had brought it home, so I knew it had to be *_SOMEWHERE!!!),_* when I told my teacher that that was likely where it had ended up, my teacher didn't believe me one bit (he basically accused me of outright lying, thinking it was a pretty pathetic and made-up excuse) and almost made me rewrite the entire thing (we had gotten our essays back to make edits before resubmitting), until my parents went through my dad's death piles on the kitchen table and, lo and behold, my essay *_was_* in there, and they promptly called my teacher and told him as such. My teacher was very careful about accusing me of outright lying after that.

Piles! Oh my! That's how I knew I was a cricket. Afflicted with perfectionism and always procrastinating. A big part of embracing my organizing style is recognizing it doesn't have to be cricket all the time. I don't mind puting in the work to fold all my clothes and have categories on the shelves for my pants but am I interested in having multiple categories of files? Certainly not. Dealing with papers with a ladybug approach has lifted a lifelong weight off my shoulders. Finding solutions and organizing in ways that work for my lifestyle is more important than chasing perfection. Understanding how other organizing styles think has made me a more understanding person and has proved handy in job related settings, thank you so much!

Even when I was a very young child, I naturally gravitated to and loved organizing. Organizing is 100% fun. I am 100% a cricket. I feel incredible peace and relief when every item is in its hidden designated spot. I love being able to put my hands on any item I need within 15 seconds, use it immediately, and then return it to its spot the moment I am finished using it. I love clean mostly empty surfaces. Tasteful beautiful decorations are permitted, but they are kept to a minimum. 🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗

Total cricket here 🙋🏼‍♀️ Can't believe I "misdiagnosed" myself last year and thought I was a ladybug...this video describes be almost to a T, lol Thanks first to Dawn from The Minimal Mom, I began to slowly start letting go of the perfect system a couple years ago and just telling myself, "Okay, this isn't going to be precisely what I want, BUT, the baskets are pretty, and I can always change up how I use them." Lo and behold, these small improvements not only led to a feeling of confidence and success, but I also just felt generally better because it allowed me to face things on my own time (instead of feeling pressured and guilted by something sitting out for months and months!) Over time as I have continued to declutter, I have found that while I prefer to have things hidden away for visual simplicity, I also very much prefer to see everything I have when I open a door, drawer, or cupboard. I also realized after hearing Alejandra talk about preferring binders for important papers that a filing cabinet is not for me except on very rare occasions! So I am very much cricket, but also a little bit bee 😉

I'm basically a Ladybug but have longed to be a Cricket for decades. I've incorporated "normal" organizing systems that look great when I first set them up but those setups have a tendency to fail because, despite my efforts, I'm really a Ladybug. I have incorporated some of Nikki's organizing tips in my small galley kitchen and bathrooms but I know I would never keep up with most of her methods. I've finally learned to start with Ladybug techniques. I can always tweak them more Cricket-like if I feel I need a more detailed system (I usually don't 😁) Cass, your "Clutterbugs" are the most helpful way to help us identify how we can successfully manage our stuff. It's funny, my dad is a cricket and my mum is a butterfly so growing up I've seen how systems sometimes just don't work in a household. I'm also a cricket and my husband is also a butterfly so since finding this out I'm trying the ladybug method. Sometimes he'll put stuff away because it's easy (especially easier than my cricket system from before) but sometimes he forgets because it's out of sight and out of mind for him. I don't mind anymore, I now know he doesn't do this on purpose and because it's macro organized, I just put his stuff away in no time. Both happy and the house is clean 😊

I’m a bit of a mix of a Cricket and a Bee. It really depends on the space. Also, the way you were describing crickets (mainly when people touch their piles) sounds a lot like someone who is neurodivergent, more specifically an autistic person - I say this from personal experience. I get incredibly overwhelmed and upset when people move my things and touch my things (especially without asking) and don’t put them back where they were. Honestly, it was kind of comforting to hear that others feel this way about their piles/belongings.

Oh gosh! So true! I'm a cricket, my mom's a bee (dad is cricket, sister I think is part bee, part something else, maybe cricket, maybe butterfly, maybe ladybug, I don't know - I hardly ever go into her room these days). Asperger's and ADHD here (me for sure, I think my mom to a certain extent though she's never been evaluated), and while I admit I had way too much stuff at the time (I didn't start decluttering until after graduating from college), whenever I was away at college (way out of state, so I was home only for Christmas and summer), my mom would "organize" my room, and whenever I came home, I had literally no clue where anything was because she had moved it from where I had left it, and every time I came home, the room would inevitably become a giant mess because things weren't where I left them and I would be tearing things apart trying to find something at the last minute because it wasn't where it was supposed to be. I think what finally slapped her in the face hard enough to get her to stop "organizing" my stuff, though, was repeating the process over and over and over of me needing her to send me something, her asking me where it was, me telling her exactly where I left it, but her looking there and telling me "it's not there" (in a very irritating way), when *_SHE_* was the one to put it somewhere else, *_not_* me, and me basically yelling at her (remember, she always said "it's not there" in a way that implied that it was all my fault) "well, that's where I left it, so if it's not there, it's YOUR FAULT!!" Pissed me off so much back then, and still does 10 years later.

Setting him up with his own butterfly space is needed areas. My boyfriend is a ladybug, folding clothes was a big one, I solved that by just buying 4 bins, one for tank tops, shirts, shorts and sweatpants. Nothing is folded but his mess is contained to a bin and he can look through it himself. Or his keys and papers. A wire paper holder for loose papers and a tray for keys/things to empty his pockets on to. Hooks for a butterfly are helpful. Or a small bin for clean socks and one for dirty. I’m a butterfly so doing that helps me catch my mess and hold me accountable for it.

Thank you so much for this, Cas! I’m looking forward to the 🐞 one - I’m a 🦗 living with (at least) two of them and I’m so happy to have realised that! Life’s a breeze now that I’ve organised our home ladybug style and everyone seem to be able to keep it tidy. As long as I don’t have to see it all I’m perfectly happy. Macro organising’s actually quite nice with a new baby and all, veeery easy to maintain and very good for combatting my perfectionism!

My husband is definitely a cricket. And while I wasn’t born a cricket I feel like after 15+ years of marriage to one this ladybug is evolving to be one. I have worked & worked to train myself to put things away, adopting habits etc. and now I’m known as an organized person. I love everything organized but I truly don’t think I was born that way. So if you want to be a more organized person there is hope to become one 😀

AND tHIS IS HOW LOVE MAKES MIRACLESSS 😍 so sweet :) me is the other way, I am a cricket and my loved one not at all :) and thanks to him I learnt to let go the over organisation in all area, as clothes, socks :) after years of trying to get well organised the socks drawer for example, one day, I understood how our brain works thanks to these categories and this lovely channel cricket ladybug. :) and then I felt, ohh perfect :) I try :) I bought boxes for socks, underwear etc creating categories where he can toss all in without rolling perfectly the socks :) as during years I was rolling the socks even organising by winter ones , sport ones, etc, sincerely how crazy we are crickets, it is tiring my own self ! even i was totally over busy with life, family, i was still working full time, crazy to keep feeling the need of rolling but i was not aware of i was doing it, just was a kind of get used to it, and the day I noticed I was doing the other way now, as I tossed my socks in a bin, without caring rolling, just I thought them in the socks bin, that's it and without even caring more than that too and even could sleep without caring of it, alala very huge step for a cricket believe me 😅 ! i felt a click that i took a bit of him and him a bit of me as now i noticed he has tiny cute boxes for his tiny stuff :) still a mess inside it but in smaller boxes for creating a category of mini stuff :) i felt a huge liberation when noticing i do not care more to roll socks for this example :) even if sometimes i admit my crazy nature comes back and I have a urge to roll all ! :) my family abused of my craziness, when they have to move out, they knew I was enough crazy of organising to be happy to create their boxes labelling all by categories... they used my crazy need of clarity for it, we can be professional in moving house (do not know how to tell in english ) :) now, i can use my crazy overthinking brain for my majeur goal ;) as dream work focus :) and even on it I learn to let go as it impacts my whole perception of life and sincerely the famous said that said the contrary can help one and another.... some could say it is not good if different, sincerely I realised how beneficial it has been for both to learn to let go a bit for me and to learn to organise a bit for him as it could felt stress by over confusion :) (not sure to be clear as not native english speaker but I felt so many echos on this video and the comments today :) thank you for your lovely sharing experience :) it conforts me that after only 5 years , still young couple learning to grow :) it conforts me that.. we seems to be on good path on trying to learn tolerate to evolve the best together 😊 sorry it is so many stories on the comments today, i felt very inspired for this video and the comments :) crazy crickets always have matter to do a synthesis 😅 ahhh and believe or not I tried to do it in this comment !

I am so glad you did this video series!! Since I discovered you a year and a half ago, I thought I was a ladybug! But watching this and the ladybug and other videos, I realized, holy smokes, I am a CRICKET!! I never would have guessed. I do not feel naturally tidy, my house has always been a hot mess. But I do think so much of that is due to the MAJOR need to declutter, because since I have discovered decluttering, I have been able to keep up with the organizing that I have implemented. But OH MY GOODNESS you knocked it out of the park. Starting at 3:00 that is ME, ME, ME!! Over-planning, over-researching, buying and re-buying "better" organizing products, bins, cabinets, furniture, etc. And the PILES! Thank goodness I have found you. Honestly. Thank you so much. I am watching this video on repeat to soak up the suggestions you give! (and hearing about being a cricket is now bringing the image of all the 36 crickets jumping around your house now 😂 )

She sat on the bed not knowing how to start, meanwhile I was picking her things up, folding, putting things in closets, drawers and boxes. Because, if you are going to do it, you have to do it right. I also agree about the piles. I do have PILES everywhere and they look like messes. But my piled items are categorized or at least they are to me. As for Nikki - I ABSOLUTELY LOVE her and her channel. For as much as I HATE crickets (the insect), I AM EVERY BIT A CRICKET (the organizer)! Cricket = me. My college friends teased me because I had my socks sorted by color and stored in ziploc bags in the drawer! Now, I store my bras, panties, socks, hosiery in PACKING CUBES in the drawer! But I’m stuck now because I’m unpacking after moving 15 years of life in another house. You are helping me to just let go of stuff and stop holding on to guilty clutter. Happiness for me will be my unpacked and organized home!!!!! Thanks for this video that’s all about me!!

I'm still working with it, but slowly adapting my house and my mind with the good enough. I'm a good chameleon, so I can work with the other styles, I just need to put the system in place... when I though about the perfect way to install it.... as I said, it's a work in progress. This has clarified things for me. I am a cricket, but I was brought up by butterflies and so there were no cricket systems set up so all I did was pile! I also want to put my things away when I have time to do it properly so I have created more laid back systems, like my paper pile is now a magazine rack so it's tidy until I can sort it later 🙂 My sock drawer is beautiful though 👍

My hubby is just so nice that he doesn't complain about my piles and is having the house renovated just to give me my own space for my crafts (soaps, room sprays, eo, balms, etc). I've always said, give me a skyscraper and i could easily fill it up. 🙄😆 i also shared your channel/videos with family and friends so that they would understand their organizing style and the styles of their family members. As a Cricket/Bee living with a Ladybug/I'll put it away later (never) I recommend organizing in stages, especially in shared spaces. We moved not long ago and, as I was unemployed and he was working, the bulk of unpacking fell on me. Well! I had fun, and the dollar stores got some business as I tend to organize in stages, especially when moving. Step 1: find and group necessities, like clothes and toiletries, in the areas they will be used. Step 2: broad categories. Hanging stuff hung, drawer stuff in drawers, bathroom stuff split (he'd better not mess with my hair stuff!) This is the Step where organizing his things typically stops. Step 3: refine until satisfied (this can take awhile, but I enjoy it.)

You're so right!!! I can use a system, and naturally put things away ... unless I'm not done with it. I absolutely hate getting things out because they are too hard to access, and they only stay out because it's too difficult to put away. It just finds a new spot (a pile). This motivates me to find a new/better systems. I feel so called out rn lol I'm such a cricket, once upon a time I thought I was a butterfly

I’m somewhat between a 🐞and a 🦗. I’m definitely a hidden organizer, but I’m a little more detailed than a ladybug, but a lot more laid back type B personality than a cricket. Good enough is always better for me than perfect later. My hubby is kind of the opposite. He’s very visual. If it’s not out, he forgets about it. He likes to see his things, but he’s also a perfectionist, so he will have piles galore because he doesn’t have the time to put things away perfectly. Your explanations make it easier to understand, maybe not easier to deal with, but at least I get it now.

Thank you for these videos! Not only am I excited to hear from you every day this week, but I just had a major realization … I am an overwhelmed cricket! I’ve been thinking that I’m an aspiring cricket, because I’m just not great at actually using the detailed systems I have set up (but I really like the detailed systems). This has been working for me moving forward because I’m just working on developing more ladybug-style systems and decluttering … but this video made me realize that I used to be great at using my detailed systems … before I had a husband and 2.5 kids 😅 I’m not sure it’s going to really change anything as I move forward, but it makes me feel better about my self awareness!

I so relate. I have learned to let it be good enough too because of being overwhelmed with a spouse and 5 kids and running a business from home. The paperwork part of the business is my struggle. How do you set up solutions for all that stuff in your home and still do all the mom things and not pull your hair out? Solution: lighten up, declutter, and embrace good enough systems. Then pick a time in a week or so to tweak what isn't working. You don't know what will work until you try it. Now I just set up something. It's gotta be better than a pile right? Lol

For the first year or so of taking your Clutterbug test, I really thought that I was a Ladybug. But now I know that I'm very much some part a cricket, soooo I'd love to share my thoughts on this video from both sides of this coin!!! I can TOTALLY understand how frustrated a cricket can be when anyone else moves there piles!!! I used to be in accounting & when I was in the middle of huge reconciliations, but another project came up to interrupt it, I would take my desk blotter (that otherwise lived on top of my filing cabinet for just such events) and put it over my current paperwork. Then pull out new stuff to do on top of the desk blotter. This way, I could keep my place with the large project safe underneath the blotter intact!!! Soooo, I totally agree that I don't like to put away things that I'm not done with;) BUT ALSO I can TOTALLY UNDERSTAND that other people would get sick of seeing the crap left out in piles before I finish my projects, because I SOMETIMES DO TO (my ladybug side)!!!! And that's when I go around and start shoving everything in sight inside drawers and cabinets all willynilly until I free up my ladybug brain space again to my peace and calming visual space again!!! And I guess bc I'm in the middle of the 2, I only like filing cabinets that are SUPER FAST AND EASY to file (I set up a 1 file for each month folder system when I was an accounting manager! Talk about FAST & EASY! Just shove it all for that month into 1 hanging folder and move on with my life, eh mm, I mean work lol 😂 I used that system for YEARS at various companies!!! But the cricket in me also kept the entire monthly close on my desk throughout the week until I was finished with it. I never was one of those people who put away all their papers each night just to pull them all out again every morning, ugh!) And my bins & baskets in my cabinets at home are actually super detailed where everything goes inside each one, but no lids or covers to slow me down tossing stuff back into the empty 'hole' left by the thing that I pulled out ;)

I'm very much a cricket. And as a cricket, I am very much about reading the instructions. But like our perfectionism can get in the way of actually getting things organized, so can our needing to read the instructions until we eithier know exactly what to do or get overwhelmed and give up before we even start. It becomes a bad problem. Someone once called perfectionist paralysis. We will research and research, and never actually get started. My husband is like you and just jumps right in. I mean, that is how I organize all the clothes in my home. The towels, I don't roll them, but I do fold them in a specific way and I like to store them by color. My sewing room is a disgrace. I knit and crochet so I have so many patterns printed out that I have not put in binders, so I have pile them up on top of the ones I already have put in binders. But my sewing room is a catch all.
