The cool thing about a fretless guitar, is that each of your fingertips turns into a guitar slide. You no longer have to feel the confines of the frets, and you can explore all of the musical space between each note. The challenge is that you have to be much more accurate with all of your finger positions, because if your fingertips are slightly off position, you will be out of tune, even if the guitar is in perfect tuning. This Newcaster guitar has a stainless steel fretboard, so the tone of the strings vibrating off of the fretboard sounds very close to the tone you get from a a metal fret. If it had been a hardwood fretboard, the tone would be noticeably more mellow. To accentuate the heavy swamp vibe, I ran through the DOUBLE CREAM pedal from Blackstar Amplification. I also used a very heavy dose of vibrato from the Fender Twin Reverb amp... but without any reverb, so the tone wouldn't get too soupy.

There's good players, great players, then there are those once in a lifetime phenomenally gifted players... this guy is one of those so blessed with an extraordinary gift. It's not about how many notes you can squeeze into 4 bars of music, esp Blues. It's about feeling it, expression, rhythm and so on. This guy does all of it without a second thought, truly love to hear Justin play and I'm not necessarily a blues aficionado, I like many different styles of music. All I see and hear is a pure inherent gift and talent. Keep playing Justin, I'll keep listening.

KZbin needs a lesson from my grandmother as to what is acceptable conduct... and what is NOT! You NEVER interrupt in the middle of a performance for ANY reason other than to announce that the building's on fire, or worse. This was a stellar performance that did not need to be broken by the sound of some Brit hawking lessons on how to play the blues on your guitar. Especially, when you are getting a lesson from a performance by one of the very best in the field! Great job Justin! Absolutely incredible... as usual!

Michael Miller that’s not how it works... There’s still as much as a half inch to an inch worth of tonal play around those dots. You could put your finger right on that dot and simply roll your finger forward and back to get different notes. So going from the 1st fret all the way up to the 9th and having the notes work with each other does take a lot of skill

It helps that he's playing the blues. Not to take anything away from his skill but one of the characteristics of the blues genre is microtonal bends. Basically, you have a little wiggle room to be out of tune, that's part of the blues sound. It's were all that good dissonance and grit comes from. Though you still have to know how/when/where/why to use that power.

I love how "dirty" this sounds. It's almost as if he's the Tom Waits of the guitar world, nothin' but gravel, artistry, and unquestionable uniqueness. It was the Blues Brothers that opened the door for me to appreciate the blues years ago, but it's artists like Justin that keeps the genre fresh and invigorating.

Laiten Byers I really don’t think it is, I think one has to be able to differentiate the difference between mainstream pop music, rap, etc etc (yes I’m aware that there are amazing songs coming out every day), but from where I come from, we can pick out the bad from the good using objective fact about the music itself. So your snide comment to this lady is quite pointless, given that there is objectively bad and good music. If you like bad music you have bad taste, if you like good music you have a good ear for music itself.
