Sleep Deprived College Kid, I'm totally with you on this one. The past, no matter how repulsive to "modern" sensibilities, should be preserved, both for artist reasons (if any) and so that the dangers some of these objects once represented are not swept under the rug and thus forgotten/ignored over time.

If the obelisks are to be removed they should atleast move them somewhere like a museum where it can have a plaque to explain its history and significance in the past. Because it is very important inorder to stifle racial supremacy for kids to learn about the past of where they are from. History must not be wiped because that does not fix the problem. By observing and critiquing history it goes towards improving the current lives of all people in the south of all races.

I live in New Orleans and can give you a local perspective. The one monument that is discussed here is fairly unknown and was purposely relocated decades ago into a fairly hidden spot. When the argument for the historical monuments is debated which one of the main proponents is a black baptist preacher, the argument centers around the fact that this is part of the history and remembering the wrong is the best way to not repeat it just like you have concentration camps made into museums in Europe. The average local who supports these monuments have never seen or spoken of the obelisk monument since it was basically hidden, the main argument is for the huge beautiful bronze statues to people like a Robert E Lee that sit in prominent areas and are iconic landmarks. Yes, these people are historical figures for the south, but nobody is looking at them as landmarks supporting racism. Many people bring up the fact Jefferson has his own memorial in DC, yet he was a racist slave owner as well as many founding fathers. Now I'm not debating that there are no racists, after all this is the south, but they are not part of this debate, they have not had a racist organization come out publicly for the monuments, nor have I even heard the mention of any racists in the local debate over this which has spanned 2 years and several town hall type meeting where both sides are very culturally diverse. I think it was a little irresponsible that you covered this without mentioning any of the arguments in support to keep monuments or how diverse both sides are, you made it seem like seal team 6 had to covertly remove racist monuments from deep inside a racist haven. They went overboard to protect workers but I don't believe anything had happened to suggest this level of preparation was necessary, they were just being overcautious.

So is the argument that if we don't keep statues that celebrate racism humans will forget about American slavery and the American civil war? Is that what you mean when you say "remembering the wrong is the best way to not repeat it"? So if we get rid of racist statues...it's gonna cause people to start being more racist? I'm just trying to clarify the position.

LostTranslation85 Well reasoned points, sounds like a leftist I could actually have a conversation with. What they are trying to do IS punitive, it's not enough to win the war, or to paint all white people in the South as pro slavery (when in truth this was a VERY small minority), they have to erase any trace of Southern Pride. Secession was not ILLEGAL at the time it was done, so this argument of "treason" doesn't have an actual leg to stand on... unless your goal is the slander of an already defeated opponent. The supreme court ruling that claimed it was illegal to secede was made after the Civil War was over with. What they are doing now is pointing the finger at the South (which is traditionally Republican these days) as a way to divert attention from Democratic stronghold areas (Chicago, New York, Detroit, California) where REAL inequality between blacks and whites exists. Make the Conservatives in the South into your boogeyman, then ignore the fact that the city where Obama came from has descended into a black on black crime wave. Label Trump racist then ignore that New York (where Hillary was Senator) has the most segregated school system in the nation (and where Kalief Browder was unjustly thrown into jail). California was a BLUE state when Rodney King was assaulted. For the South they point out historic monuments, or flags from the past... or made up events like Ferguson. Its sad that these people are so focused on erasing HISTORY that they cannot see actual racism happening in front of their eyes (the Democratic efforts to keep black people in a victimized mentality so they will vote Democrat).

+Big A Nice synopsis. I have mixed feelings about it. Sure, I abhor what those monuments stood for, but pretending it never happened isn't productive, either. Were it my neighborhood, I'd recommend putting new Historical Plaques alongside the existing ones, explaining how/why/what is totally offensive about it. But, it's not my neighborhood....so, I'd never consider telling ya'all what ya aughta do.

aaronpolitical By your views then the Lincoln Memorial should be pulled down. Do ANY research into Lincoln's plans for blacks after the emancipation proclamation. He wanted them to leave and start their own colony. He didn't think they should have the same social or political rights as whites. That by definition makes him a racist. So now what?

There definitely should be a museum for the entire South (in whichever State will be decided upon) which will house everything dealing with the hateful enslavement period, as there are museums of the Holocaust in Europe and Israel. And schoolchildren should be taken to view what slavery was all about, to learn, to experience in order not ever to repeat such an evil again.

Sean Ryan Learn American history you say? Abraham Lincoln repeatedly stated his war was caused by taxes only, and not by slavery, at all. "My policy sought only to collect the Revenue (a 40 percent federal sales tax on imports to Southern States under the Morrill Tariff Act of 1861)." reads paragraph 5 of Lincoln's First Message to the U.S. Congress, penned July 4, 1861. "I have no purpose, directly or in-directly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so," Lincoln said it his first inaugural on March 4 of the same year. There is no proof of Lincoln ever declaring the war was fought to abolish slavery, and without such an official statement, the war-over-slavery teaching remains a complete lie and offensive hate speech that divides Americans, as is being done now by the media and politicians regarding the Confederate flag in South Carolina. Slavery was NOT abolished; just the name was changed to sharecropper with over 5 million Southern whites and 3 million Southern blacks working on land stolen by Wall Street bankers.

Some history needs to be studied and learned from, but if that history lesson happens to stand in the center of your town, proudly placed atop a pedestal, this has a big psychological impact on that town's citizens, such that those who are proud of one's ignorant past, become more proud when looking upon said monument. And those who had ancestors who were slaves, feel demeaned in the face of said proud people; thus creating a continuous loop of antagonism. New Orleans is already dependent on tourism and the image and brand it sells, add to that the rising sea level, sinking coast, and disappearing land mass and what you have is a city who needs to rebrand itself in order to survive.

@Direblade11
@Direblade11 7 жыл бұрын
Lightbringer The Berlin wall no because that's not a historical monument. I'd keep Hitler statues though (or at least be okay with them being in museums) because destroying historical landmarks is destroying the proof we have that history exists. Yeah Hitler's worse than ISIS but he should be remembered for that, not erased from history.
@ArchlordZer0
@ArchlordZer0 7 жыл бұрын
That's poor logic as a monument doesn't give you the context of the history, but simply a grandiose representation of that individual/beliefs. You're using false equivalence to make a point. The Coliseum is ancient history. People aren't advocating for gladiatorial battles in this day and age. Confederate and Nazi beliefs still exists and is celebrated in our society to which many a good many problems still stem from. Not only that, but they are still considered contemporary.

If you are going to report on an incident and portray yourself as informed and unbiased, then at least do your homework. I neither condone racist, in any form, nor applaud those who do. That said, this act by New Orleans is I'll conceived, fiscally wasteful, and designed to placate historical revisionists who paint anything g to do with the War between the States with a broad brush that eschews the underlying truths behind those things they denounce, in short, pleasing those who shout the loudest, not those who present cogent argument. The statues targeted in this action are not all "icons of racism". I heartily support the removal of the first state because it was exactly that and I personally supported movements to have taken down. By contrast, the statue of Robert E. Lee is a monument to a superior graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point who was Lincoln's first choice for commanding general of the Union Army, which he declined, not out of a hatred of blacks but a loyalty to his home state of Virginia which had sided with the Confederates. Through the long lense of history people ignore that this war began over states rights and loyalty to state, in many things, overroad national concerns due to distance and local necessity. What Next? Do we burn down Davis' home in MS because he lived there, it SOUNDS like hyperbole......but Is it?
