Is the PS5 being written off as a failure?
Hideki Yasuda, a Japanese analyst thinks Sony may see PS5 as a failure.
Currently, it feels like the Sony Group is more focused on stock prices and profits than on the way they conduct their business. Indeed, from an investor's perspective, a company that makes profits is a good company, but it's unclear why they are in the PlayStation business.
In a hearing with the Sony Group, they expressed the view that "even if PS5 sales are lower than PS4, it's not a problem because we're making a profit." Personally, I was astonished by this response because it suggests the notion that "as long as there's profit, anything goes."
The likely background to this view is that Sony Group's envisioned goal of PS5 surpassing PS4 significantly and overwhelming Xbox is now seen as unattainable. Moreover, rather than pouring unnecessary capital into what can be considered a failed PS5, it would be better to make fundamental improvements with the PS6. Thus, it is reasonable to scale back tactics to a level that won't disappoint investors, as long as there are profits, criticism will be avoided.
In the business briefing, I couldn't understand whether the goal of the game segment was to make money, to develop the PlayStation business, or to win globally even at the expense of Japanese users. It seems necessary to redefine the purpose of the game business.
As an investment target, I highly value the Sony Group. The company is a model of efficiency and asset-light management, and they have established a recurring business with music, movies, and anime copyrights. The overall growth potential of their business is high, making it a stock worth investing in for the long term. That is why I can't help but feel ambiguity in the management's decision to allow Jim Ryan (former CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment), who was responsible for the confusion in the game business, to leave amicably. I fear that such vague management strategies may impact the company's business in the future.

Your observation is true each gen was better and better than the last. But where your wrong and right at same time is. The PS5 is better than PS4 yes but only by a little. Think about Ps1 to ps2 was a massive leap in tech. PS2 to PS3 same thing. The. PS3 to PS4 major leap in technology. Then you get to PS4 to PS5 a little jump in technology.

Developers/publishers need to understand that instead of raising game prices to cover costs, sell the games cheaper and more people would be able to or willing to buy more copies. $70 games are barely selling 3 million copies, yet $40 games are selling over 10 million. Movie prices have stayed the same for over a decade and making hundreds of millions to billions of dollars.

Some people couldn’t even get a ps5 for a year so I doubt they see it as a failure because the ps6 is already in its first prototype and it’s got dedicated path tracing tech, and the thinking behind it is 60-120fps with path traced visuals. Also monitor support for ultrawide displays.

Had a power outage, and my PS5 got corrupted and had to be reset back to the factory setting. I lost all my save data because I didn't have a Plus membership, which means I have to restart from the beginning on some games I was going for Platinum. Sony, at this point, only cares about making money. Charging players to play online with friends and to make sure their players save data are all saved in case of an emergency, like a power outage. I'm extremely frustrated and not to mention absolutely livid 🤬.

I think Sony got scared when they knew about Xbox acquiring ABK, seems like they stopped focusing on triple a single player games, as they used to, instead they shifted to gaas. Gaming is expensive I know it never been cheap on consoles but inflation, leanth and cost of games making them there's loads reason. But inflation has hit everyone in the Europe as well. If Sony wanted to sell more PS5's all they had to do was end PS4 support for any new games, What did happen is COVID, it totally dorked up its lifecycle, so they had no choice but to extend the PS4 EOL else face millions of pissed off consumers who could not buy a PS5 because Sony could not make enough.

I like my PS5 and owned every generation of them and I gotta say Sony failed in delivering 1st party. Every gen they have invested less and less into them. Not every game has to be a blockbuster. They have several franchises that were smaller but great games that they just abandoned. Especially the RPGs from PS1 and PS2. They totally failed the PSVR2. How they could invest in that system and not back it up with games is ridiculous. It's concerning what is going on with the PS5 software.

Ps5 games here in NZ are selling new $140 - $160, 2nd hand $70 at EB Games PS5 consoles just on $800 as for the cost of fuel here we pay close to $3 a litre so probably close around $13 USA a gallon stop ya moaning some countries have it far worse cost of living wise than others, I suppose you just have to set your priorities right to get ahead.

I don’t like the current selection of games. Why aren’t the developers taking risks like they used to?? Most games today are just a quick cash grab and a rehash of one another. There are numerous examples of the Pandemic effect going on even now. Video games and console sales are just part of it. You've got PC GPU's whose prices may never go down. Streaming services are a huge one. People are not watching these channels like they did during Covid but companies don't seem to want to acknowledge that. Board and card game sales went way up. Mobile games. Anything that is entertainment related was bloated and now it's not. Reality is back but, again, greedy companies just don't see it. They remain delusional...😁
