The single rear bumper tube is most likely correct for your car. The early teardrop cars had them. The parts book stated that they should be replaced for split tubes because the police didn’t like them. Info from ‘The 356 Porsche’ by Dr B Johnson.

I enjoy the variety of projects. About the Aerocar, check out The Old Rheinbeck Aerodrome. They have been working with aircraft engines for at least 65 years. Though Cole Palen no longer is alive, there is plenty of expertise there. Also The Smithsonian Air and space Museum will definitely have info on you engine. I have been working on an auto project myself a 62 MGA in similar condition to your Porsche. Also building a desk out of a piano, bringing back to life an old outboard motor, building a utility shed and even a project like you people do in the repair shop, making something out of a wedding present that my grandfather gave to my parents.

With the spot welder put some insulation tape on the end of the arms. It can arc out through that spot and not give as good a weld. On the slug test, fold the two pieces back, stick it in a vice and peel it off. You should hope for at least a 3mm measurable slug in stuck on one of the parts and a hole in the other. Don't rush the welds too, if the tips aren't water cooled they can change resistance as they heat up and again the weld can go bad once the tips are hot ! Usually happens more on thicker gauges !

Greetings from the good side of the pond, Torrance, Ca, U.S.A., At 8:22 you talk about how depressing it can be. I found your channel on 10-08-2024, binged 'till 4:00 AM, caught up today, (12-09-2024), and had to mention that I've been renovating/restoring a 250-year-old French ''comtoise Morbier'' grandfather clock I've had too re-stain, re-sand so many times. So many times in the past 3 years, I have wanted to quit. Thank you for sharing your persistence. I cannot wait to see the finished piece!

At first, in the beginning of this series I thought this to be a car that I sold to a gentleman in the UK; same color, same general timeframe and definitely same condition (Northern New England). But mine was a 1960 T5 Coupe. As one who's familiar with the challenges of these rusty old 'Tubs,' taking mental health breaks is critical.

Hi Dom! Thanks for long awaited Porsche episode. I know WD40 products are good, but for bolts as rusty as the ones on your bumper, get Wurth's Boltex. We use that stuff at work and it is incedibble. You literarly see the rust melting and pouring off of the part. Bolts on which it will not work will have to be cut with an anglegrinder. Keep up the good work mate! Good going!

Dominic - have a look at the Porsche factory “made by hand “ film on you tube- it shows the spot weld team assembling the floor and body sections and there’s a close up of the application of the long jaws spot welder. In fact they are reasonably straight but are random - but alot quicker as you said! There’s no guide of where to weld - it’s all by eye and they add two welds on corners. Brilliant progress and thank goodness for Trevor!
