@@OsbornTramain Chevrolet DIDN`T officially use the `Silverado` MODEL name until the 1999 model year (the same with GMC and the `Sierra` name)! From 1962-1998, both Chevrolet and GMC used C (2 wheel-drive) and K (4 wheel-drive). The Chevy models were (from 1962-1987): C-10, C-20, C-30, K-10, K-20 and K-30 (1977-1987); the GMCs were: C-1500, C-2500, C-3500, K-1500, K-2500 and K-3500 (1977-1998). For the 1988 model year, BOTH makes started using the 1500-3500 designations. As for the Silversdo name, it`s TRUE origins really date back to the spring of 1971, when the Cheyenne Super trim package (it was top-of-the-line at that time) was added to Chevy`s truck options and used the trim code=YE9 and remained that through the 1974 model year and when the 1975 model year began, among the changes were the Cheyenne Super option being renamed SILVERADO, basically (same trim code). THAT`S how that came to be! As for GMC, the Sierra name goes back to, at least, the 1972 model year (for 1972-1974, they had 4 trim levels from base to top-of-the-line, in this order: Custom, Super Custom, Sierra and Sierra Grande; Chevrolet`s equivalents from late 1971-1974 were: Custom, Custom Deluxe, Cheyenne and Cheyenne Super; for 1975, Chevy`s trim levels were now called: Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, Cheyenne and, yes, Silverado; GMC`s equivalents became: Sierra, Sierra Grande, High Sierra and Sierra Classic). As to why GM dropped the C/K identification for the `99 model year, the impression I got was that GM wanted to sound more "hip" with the so-called changing times to sell better, most likely. Anyway, I was trying to give you the gist of how all of this confusion, which it seems A LOT of people don`t even BOTHER doing their research on, got started! This information can even be found online (gmheritagecenter.com, for example)!
