I have a 4bd1 in my 2 door i converted it in 1994. Th engine had done about 50k it has now traveled around 600k since and still on the same LT95 around 550k. Mine is not a LR Australia conversion but a zenith conversion and to make it mate to the V8 bellhousing it has a flywheel that resembles a truck brake drum all 28 kgs of it. Factory Isuzu is14 kgs. She starts on and incline of 40°in high range 1st and changes into 2nd, but thats her limit on that incline. Absolutely brilliant 4wd. That why i still have her and she is undergoing rust repairs and upgrade on the factory rust sections. I dont use first in traffic unless its a hill. Slow and noisy are the trade offs. When i have done the rust i will be looking the overdrives i see people now using. Well worth the $$.

I just purchased a civilian 1986 one ten with the Izuzu . In Australia civilian Land Rover rovers came with them too! Could have picked in Aus at the time either the rover 3.5 v8 or the Izuzu from factory!

Hey mate, I have owned a couple of 4db1t defenders here in AU. The first one I switched out the turbo for a T25 GT2860RS with a 3" intake through an intercooler. This meant amazing power gains but my R380 only lasted 2 days and I had to go back to the LT95. It was also pretty air-hungry. I ran a 4" snorkle and a 3" exhaust. However, with the more recent build, I am using the LT95 4-spd behind it. I have kept the factory freefloat turbo but have clocked it around and now have the pipe running under the air filter. This works well. Less power but I get to use the quieter 2.5" exhaust and I can go back to the R380 if I want. Far less complicated and it does what I need. One day I may go for a MXA (Isuzu) 5-spd truck gearbox and then perhaps i'll consider a Holset HE221W turbo with intercooler. Who knows....

I'm new to the sites and have just picked up a 1993 Defender that was originally owned by one of my relatives for the first 26 years of its life. I'm interested in watching back through the whole catalogue to try and pick up enough info to hopefully keep it going for some time to come. My thanks for all the time up have put in to the channel.

Looking forward to this one. There's an australian guy does videos on here under the name LROR, he's got one in a 110", and the thing goes up/over just about anything, and barely gets above idle, I just love watching it.

I'm excited for this series! Cant wait to see what you get up to on this Landy. I have the 85 110 county with the 4bd1 in Australia, I added a turbo because it was a total slug up hills! Wanted to add an intercooler and have to do exactly the same as you described with turning or "clocking" the turbo so will be following your build religiously!

Apparently some of these pumps have automatic enrichment for starting , holding throttle fully open latches enrichment in pump for starting . once started release pedal and it should then go to run position in pump.

I had a Perkins 4203 in a series 2 and it was the same. I even fitted two batteries to get more power in the morning. Once started it would run all day without any issues. A pity because both the Perkins and the Isuzu are good torquey engines. I’m sure you’ll figure it out soon.

A great engine overbuilt and heavy duty. These and the indirect injection 4bd2t were installed in excavators and the like. Different oil pans are available for different configs. Indeed a 4bd2t can be converted to the 4bd1t direct injection with a head injectors lines etc and vice vera. The 4bd1t should fire off easily without help. Looking forward to this job on your Mike.

I have a aftermarket turbo on mine,a bit smoke when the turbo kicks in because l had to richen it up on the pump. She goes quite good and the fuel economy is around about 12lt per 100km. I did have problems with the pump because I forgot to take a the banjo nut of at the base of the pump to clean that plastic mesh filter located in that banjo nut. I think it's a 17mm or larger ring spanner 😮😮

You could well be onto something regarding a cold start position on that pump i run a pre fourtrak 2.5na in my series has a inline pump and the mechanical pump lever has a start position along with run and stop on it . Warn enough in uk not to bother setting that up over here.

It's about time that lovely engine had a bit of TLC Mike. Your own car is always the last to get done. That engine has been in all sorts all over the world including cold climates. I am sure you will get to the bottom of the problem, and she will start like a Toyota Yaris. Looking forward to this one, especially the leaky turbo. A cabin without fumes, what will they think of next.

@@BritannicaRestorations I have been thinking about this at work today. It may not be relevant but on my old Land Cruiser, it has a duel circuit on the glow plugs. It has a 12v and a 6v. As far as I know, the 12v should kick in for a few seconds and then the 6v continues for a bit longer. For a long while the 12v was kaput, so it would start but not so good in the winter. I know this is Isuzu but the Japanese tend to use the same systems. Worth a thought.

Definitely keen to see how this progresses. I've got a 4x4 Perentie and have been considering turbocharging it with an intercooler in front of the radiator. This is all definitely doable, as there are multiple examples here in Aus with similar setups. From memory most people go for the hx30w or hx30 Super as they are a t3 flange a mate up to the exhaust housing, however some also go for gt2860rs or TD04HL-19t but these will need a flange adaptor. I have also seen that a Mambatek GTX2971r has been recommended as the "best-suited turbo" for the engine. Could one of those cables be for a choke/hand throttle? The Aus Perenties have them on the right side of the steering column.

Hi Mike I’ve got the 2.8 4jb1t in mine, on my diesel pump there’s some kind of electrical switch by the throttle lever, I believe a connecting wire from the top of the thermostat housing goes to it for the cold start, but mines been cut off.

Look into a TD5/ Puma radiator and intercooler set up as the intercooler is a neat installation of inlet and outlet either side of intercooler, radiator is moulded to allow intercooler pipe work either side.

I don't really understand this starting problem. When I picked my 300tdi it was 0 C and it had not been started for how long , needed a jump from my small corsa , and started like a hot knife cutting butter. I have a Toyota 3B 3.4l no turbo and in negative 30C it starts up after one crank rotation. It is a mechanical in-line pump and Toyota over inject at start up.

Similar in 110 here but the all iron Mazda SLT 3.5. plenty in OZ also. Cold weather starts need a hell of a battery. Suspect it would not start in Canadian winters! Could you fit a block heater? My Mazda sump has a position for one. Isuzu a cracking big stove. Like the Mazda, best source of info seems to be Australia (and parts supplies). J

1/2 hour on the block heater and it is a different beast! Parts are hard to find in Canada - Isuzu dealers want to know the VIN of the truck, not the engine number - I have no idea what that would be
