It is great that you can turn wrenches as you will undoubtedly need to on this one. I know as I bought 2 Range Rover classics one after another, and the only car I have ever bought 2 of. I loved my ranges but they were very fiddley after 100,000 miles, luckily they were designed to actually be worked on rather than just buying new parts. My rear wiper packed it in on my first one, so I took it out thinking I would have to buy a new motor. On further inspection I found you could disassemble it, which I did. The grease in the gear housing had just gone off, so I repacked it and it worked good as new! Never give up!👍

Happy that you have found a good 200tdi. I had one until recently when the head gasket went. Sold it to my friend who will repair it and use it on his farm (I am in Tasmania). I took the head off to repair but found cracks between the valve seats. Impossible to find a new head . My friend will repair it and take a chance that the cracks cause no problems. Be aware that the clutch push rod will punch through the throw out arm usually at around 250000km (150000miles). Mine did that, engine out and fit an upgraded throw out arm. Did everything else while I was there so hope the head holds out. These vehicle have a bomb proof engine apart from head gaskets and are a great drive on and off road....enjoy!

We bought a K reg. in about 1996 it was the best vehicle we have ever owned, my wife loved driving it, and the kids travel sickness was cured with the raised rear seats. We had many happy trips to Cornwall in it from Yorkshire and it never let us down. So jealous looking forward to seeing your progress.

Hi Sophie, glad to hear that you want to keep/restore the vehicle to its original state. My first contact with a Disco was when I hired a very new 200tdi auto to pull a horse trailer. It proved to be a superb choice. I eventually bought a 2nd hand tdi300 and later 'upgraded' to a tdi5 and must admit that the extra power was appreciated in modern traffic. Both vehicles had done well over 100000 miles when I part exchanged them and I had very few issues or need to call out the recovery services more than a couple of times! Best of luck with the new job and new project.

A friend of mine had the same model Disco. It used to do 560 miles on one tank. There's a ton of rust on it Sophie. I know most of it's surface rust but it proves that not many owners wash underneath to rid of the mud, salt & sand. Discos in Australia got mixed reviews when first introduced but I know you'll do a great job restoring. Keep a list of what you need & also try & see if you can find any of the optional extras for it online. Love your work ❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏

I'm sure you'll be loving the 200tdi. I had a couple of 300tdi's & they were great machines but I would say I made one major upgrade I made to them both was fitting a full width intercooler which I can tell you was well worth it. No more up & down through the gears & tons more pulling power. Good luck & have fun.... 👍

I was gonna ask if there were ways of making them a bit more lively and less gutless when driving. Interesting a full width intercooler is a good upgrade. Do people/ owners swap out turbos for bigger ones??

You've found an absolutely cracking 200tdi there Sophie. All straight and unmolstered. I'm pretty jealous! The 200tdis are 👌 Not sure about the engine treatment you used to start, a small amount of 2 stroke works well on a TDI. They pretty much run on anything. Check your inner wings, all the sill rails, rear arches and rear valance behind the bumper for rot. You are already onto the boot floor 👍 Looking forward to seeing loads more

Central locking, my rear wiper motor was shorting and stealing the power to the actuators. Only the drivers door would unlock, everything else was super locked ( Disco 2)..After ripping the dash out and checking all earth points I tapped on the wiper stem and bink, unlocked. Replaced the motor and working again. 👍🏻

Love the discovery out of all the land rovers, my dad owned is first one when i was in primary school(im 28 just now) his first was a 200tdi aswell, then few years later he owned his first td5 but he hasnt owned one since due to mobility reasons. I am currently on my third disco, my first was a 2004 td5 and loved it but due to financial reasons it had to go. Eventually back on my feet i bought another td5 but was 2000 year and a little bit of a dog due to not being looked after previously so eventually became too expensive to get repaired and through an mot, this was soon replaced by my current vehicle which is a 56 plate disco 3 tdv6 which is good but you have to have deep pockets if things go wrong. All the best with the build though as you dont see many of these around and they bring back memories the old 200tdi 👍🏼

That's a lovely, honest looking early Disco 👍 . Few and far between now. If it's half as clean bodywise as it looks on the surface you've done bloody well there! Mate has a '93 Coniston Green 3dr and, while we polished it up nice for his wedding, the last MOT showed the underside was not so good 😢 Looking forward to a strip down video as my '94 Rangie is needing some love and I'm sure some of the common horror points will be transferable between the two! The 200TDi is pretty bombproof, got mine started first push of the button (it's now in Tilly my '67 109) after 4 years sitting idle. Swapped the fluids, some fresh diesel and a charged battery and she was off, sweet as a nut 😍

lovely D1 Sophie! I'll be following you avidly on this project as my 200tdi 1993 D1 commercial built by special vehicles nut and bolt restoration has stalled due to renovating my friends TD5D2 to get it through the mot. Body lift off any time and I will be launching my youtube channel with that! it will be original stock (not the radio though and I've blanked the aerial hole in the front wing. I'll join your group in due course 👍🥰🤗

I had a 1989 Discovery, the very first ones with the Blue Conran interior and I would love to get my hands on one of those again. The beige interior is nice and I think it was largely similar to the Conran Blue, but the blue interior just looked good! (That said the beige interior on my LR3 HSE is very nice!). I did own another 3 door Discovery 1, I purchased a Japan import and owned that for a while. And.. when I was working part time as in a instructor at a new LR Experience center for a short time I had a genuine Camel Trophy Discovery as a '"company car" but that was a scary drive as it rolled around a lot! Incidentally we saw a lot of the Japan "Camel Trophy Discovery''s" while I was there, people were importing them. These were factory made copies with a slightly different roof rack because there was no internal roll cage in the Japan copies. Aside from that they looked good and I've seen them advertised as "Genuine" which I suppose is 50% true as they came out of the same factory. Love your videos Sophie, you are the sort of talent we look for in TV, well done!

Great find, like you say there can't be many originals left. Certainly my H-reg 200tdi 2-door is far from original, having been bobtailed 10 years ago by a previous owner due to massive rot and transformed into a neat challenge truck. Still has the original blue seats though! A friend has a G-reg V8 (not G-WAC sadly) that I'd love to own. I'm looking forward to the rest of the project, I've been a Disco fan for a long time now. You need to leave that mouldy coin in the holder, its part of the car now!
@RhysLRWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Your friends V8 would be worth a lot! Personally I’d rather a 200TDI G-reg if I were to get one because in my opinion that’s the better engine for the disco out of the V8 and TDI. Whilst yours would be worth a lot in standard condition, it was done by the previous owner when they were cheap for the obvious reason you have stated and it’s cool

Hi Sophie. Hope your new job at AM is going well. Your new to you Rover looks pretty solid compared to the old rusty vehicles here in Detroit. We use A LOT of salt on our roads in the winter to melt ice and snow because we are literally on top of a huge salt mine. I've plowed snow for over 35 years with Ford F350's and they get pretty rusty.
