Big progress Sophie. Can't believe the state of that floor. Seems like yesterday I was an apprentice on the Disco line helping build these and now I'm watching you restore one! Looking forward to the next installment.

Since you built them can you tell me who was responsible for designing the rot traps and corrosive protection on the Discovery. I'd gladly skin my knuckles pummelling them like I skinned them unfucking the rot!😜 Eg; open ended sills to load full of shit and rot. The holes in the front inner wing stiffeners. Its got holes in the top but no drain holes. I poured water on the windscreen to watch where it travelled. It flowed into the scuttle then out of a drain hole in the side of the scuttle along the stiffener into the hole on top. When I cut out the rotten stiffener it had water puddled where the rail terminates near the indicator. The replacement stiffener had no holes on top😉 I loved my D1, rot aside, it was reliable, comfortable, nippy, versatile(8×4ft sheet of steel bent over rear seats, one occasion had 2 8ftx1ft angle iron loading ramps in it), good off road and covered 278,000 before the rot was terminal. And the recoveries its done from carrying it inside, my mates 50cc scooter that conked out. To pulling stuck ambulances and a 44ton artic in the snow. So Sophie if you want a lifetime of loyalty from your Dirustary go the extra mile with corrosion protection!

@@R.Sole88109 a bit of context! I didn't build them, I helped to build them as an apprentice! I was actually in power train but that's another story. The original Discovery was heavily based on the original Range Rover, which was launched in 1970 and designed in the 60's. When talking about rot, whilst it's not good, I doubt that the original Discovery was any worse than any other vehicle based on 60's technology and design principles, and if anything that's where the problem lies. It is quite amazing though how with a bit of graft and readily available parts these things can be repaired. Wish I still had my 1998 soft dash Disco.

@@whitemoor66 Cheers for the reply mate. You done well in the power train department cos mine mechanically reliable, only real issues were wear/off road/winch carrying related. Mine was a '94 200tdi/lt77 but I dint remember the suffix. I wish I'd kept it too. But time, money, no storage space etc. Credit where it's due the chassis on mine was decent enough for a hybrid build. It lasted longer than similar vehicles of the day. Soo...since you were in Powertrain Dept can you tell me why LR didn't fit axle difflocks🤨. It would have turned it OR performance from good to mega😄 Whitemore66 take some pride in the part you played in build such a legendary machine👍🏻

@@R.Sole88109 thanks mate, I am proud in the part I played at LR, though it's 20 years since I moved on from there. Simple answer why Discovery didn't get diff lockers - cost. Unfortunately the whole time I was there the bean counters ruled, and whilst that meant we became adept at making silk purses from pigs ears so to speak, it also meant we were held back from making things the absolute best they could be, in fact it's one of the reasons I left.

In desperate need of doing my sills on my 300tdi 5 door. Seeing this has really helped me. I was looking at froggatts easy on panels & had looked at yrm. Cant decide on which hahaha. They seem well priced. Its the postage to OZ thats gonna sting! Thankfully rust isnt anywhere near an issue here as it seems to be in the UK. Loving these vids. They are the duck's nuts! You are much more diligent and enthusiastic than I. I have up on my poor old disco to rebuild my defender. So. It's the same model/trim as yours if you need parts. Your heater blowing cold? At least it's blowing. Cure for the rather expensive fan motor if u need one ever. Opel Ascona late 70's to early eighties. I was scared to swap the fan blade barrell as plastic v brittle so I just run it backwards. All good. Great work you.

And for spot welds..you can get a drill bit that works really well. Has a sharp centre and the outer blades work like a router bit...but for steel!

Super Job so far Sophie. I like your approach to the spot welds. Use CD Juwel drill bits for best results. Time is money and you will save a lot of time with proper drill bits.

Doing a great job there Sophie. IIRC when you take galvanised coating off of steel to weld it, you have to then undercoat (zinc spray) it to prevent it rusting. Also be sure to wear descent respirators and have good ventilation when welding galvanised stuff as it gives off dangerous harmful toxic fumes.

good job! some observations, I am not sure if you have ever been on corrugated roads (e.g. Namibia, Kaokaland, Botswana, serengti etc), but, they will shake rattle and roll those welds to the nth degree, they will crack open, I would suggest make longer welds instead of just spots.

looks like a old VW floor! You amaze me at the level of work you commit to on your projects. On your older build, I think the 120? you spent so much time on the frame priming and painting, even though it was galvanized . I was supprised you didnt do anything to the inside of that box section before you welded it together. Anyway Great episode Sophie!! I love watching your no fear approach to renovation! I wish I knew a 1/4 of what I know now when I was your age! Keep up the excellent work, and stop apologizing!

you could have plug welded the inner/outer sill where it was originaly spot welded insted of just welding on the edge... gives it a closer look to the original and its a bit stronger since the weld is closer to the bend.... but it takes 3 times longer and gives 10 times more pain in the ass, since it was upside down hahahaha awsome job nevertheless..... this kind of "structural" body work is hard work... 200 tdi discoverys are my favorite land rover model

Enjoying this restoration! I am amazed at how much corrosion is everywhere! Even the dash top has surface corrosion. I recently looked at a 2001 Discovery that had spent its life in the San Francisco Bay Area . What was not covered in oil, had surface rust. What alloys were they using ? And didn’t they ever think of anti corrosion coating?

Great work Sophie! In Australia, breaking yards (we crudely call wreckers) have numerous D1’s with reasonable bodies but more importantly, rust free chassis. Has anyone investigated the logistics of shipping stacked D1’s minus bodies? We don’t have the corrosion issues down here.

Sill is my next job once I get my new inner wing in on the nearside. I've already removed the inner sill . I just need to make up my mind how much outer sill to remove. Then it's onto the offside to do the same jobs and then rear floors and crossmember.

Hey, Sophie! Awesome set of videos on the D1. I have a 93 D1 200TDI 2 door that I am tuning into a camper - no ABS, Traction control, ACE etc therefore no three amigos! I am wondering though if you know if a D1 Face lift dash will fit onto a D1 pre-facelift? Planning on upgrading the brakes with facelift four pots, the diffs and eventually the 300TDI engine replacing the 200TDI which is getting a bit tired. Your videos have been really helpful - great work!

I continue to be utterly impressed by your abilities! Have your ever given any thought on replacing the thick and very heavy sound deadener with an aftermarket product? Here in the US we have Second Skin, which a lot of custom car builder use. There is also FatMat, GTmat, and others. For my Discovery's overlanding mods, I plan to remove the carpet and padding in the passenger area/boot area and either use a roll on rubberised bedliner or Second Skin. Can't wait to see the finished product.

That sound deadening what they used on these and RRC's was a stupid idea because if/when it gets wet it never seems to dry so it's like having a wet sponge constantly on the floors/boot floor.

Great work and excellent vlog. Would it be a good idea to leave the bottom rubber matt out completely if it courses all the rust? I do realise it gives a lot of sound and vibration deadening but if it generates all this rust may be it's removal may be worth considering. You are correct about panel distortion. When applying weld do you weld for three seconds and break for one? A panel guy I know does this technique to reduce distortion.
