One thing positive about the Purito scandal is how they managed the whole debacle without lies and refunding their custumers.

Purito was one of the companies that was transparent about their sunscreen issues. They came back and reformulated it and put out the data from multiple lab studies to prove the SPF amount. I doubt they would make the same mistake twice. Who knows.

if they were transparent there wouldn’t have been neither sunscreen issues nor a whole scandal abt it in the first place. but one redeemable quality (altho i wouldn’t consider it so) is that they dealt w it truthfully after the fact

For what it's worth, the Purito website reveals this product's SPF/UVA-PF testing data from two different labs (one American and one Korean). The American lab concluded there to be an average SPF of 71.4 and UVA-PF of 17.9, while the Korean lab found an SPF of 57.4 and UVA-PF of 16.65, after both had tested ten different subjects for each test respectively.

What keeps me from using Korean/Japanese sunscreens (even though I use and love a lot of Korean skincare) is the low UVA protection they offer... I know that's how they can keep the formulas so nice and pleasant to use, but I much rather give up a little on cosmetic elegance and continue to use European sunscreens that offer PPDs in the 30s and 40s, since UVA protection is the main reason I use sunscreen in the first place. Edited: spelling.
@J_Mock92
@J_Mock92 3 жыл бұрын
@@marcia6010 I can definitely understand that, but don't feel the same way personally. My skin is oily and doesn't fare well under heavy occlusives, so I'd much rather use something with a lighter and more comfortable texture day-to-day. I don't burn very easily or have any irregular pigmentation, so SPF and UVA-PF ratings of at least 15 are typically fine unless I'm going to be outside a lot
@tojin
@tojin 3 жыл бұрын
@@marcia6010 actually European sunscreen doesn't necessarily mean the protection is better, as shown in lab test. The elegant texture achieved by the Asian sunscreens are mainly because of their more advanced spf filters used that are created to give high protection & the texture.

As a Korean I confirm that popular “korean” skincare brands in the U.S. or elsewhere don’t exist most of the time or are not popular in Korea. This always drives me nuts.. I had never heard of Purito prior to coming to the US and other brands like Farmacy, peach&lily, Pyung Kang Yul, I’m from, I dew care, Soko Glam,… none. In reality Koreans love French skincare brands like La Roche Posey and American brands like Cetaphil, along with Korean brands like Dr Jart, Innisfree (used to be popular but now gets revenues from outside korea), and some exclusively domestic brands. You never know.. these “korean” brands might not even be korean.

I've definitely seen non-korean ~korean skincare but they were pretty easy to spot (turned the packaging around and it said made in Great Britain, quick google search confirmed that it was indeed a british company that had slapped some korean on their products) Idk I'm inclined to believe that those popular brands are indeed korean (I'm sure they would have been exposed at this point otherwise) I just don't trust them all that much anymore 🤡 But when asking why they're so popular abroad you have to consider that the easily to young ppl in europe/usa accessible skincare is so bottom of the barrel that any small newcomer brand that just mixes water, glycerin and hyalauronic acid without alcohol manages to impress. It was probably just easier for them to go after low hanging fruit instead of trying to enter the harder domestic market

I used to always park as far away from a cart corral at the supermarket as I could. My husband suggested that I should park near them because he felt people would be more likely to return their carts if they were closer to the corral. This is kind of the way I look at this sunscreen. They are under so much scrutiny right now that I would think they’ve gotten it right this time. ??

Apart from LG Group and Amore Pacific, which have better R&D and in-house manufacturing facilities., Kolmar is another reputable sunscreen manufacturing company. Cosmetic manufacturer of a product is supposed to be information that is made available in the company's website. For example, my Nature Republic Jumbo Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++ is manufactured by Kolmar and distributed by Nature Republic. But in Purito's website, manufacturing company is not available. It seems like the *combination* sunscreens are the ones that pose this problem, and only with certain organic filters (e.g. avobenzone); sunscreens that are purely physical weren't examined in this study, so if you're using sunscreens with purely physical filters, this would not pose a problem

I know that they released the test results from independent labs, and quite frankly it would be a business suicide if they try to cheat on the test results this time around. If I made a judgement based on the science the first time, it should be judged on the same ground, i.e. the lab test results.

@@mkryu which sunscreen? They didn’t reformulated their watery sun gel to my knowledge.. they have a new sunscreen is that what you’re talking about? The Isntree leaves a nice glow but is not shiny for me
@mkryu
@mkryu 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnsskincarereviews not sure if it’s a reformulation but one that was manufactured in 2021. It’s the Watery Sun Gel sunscreen. I just assumed most of these smaller brands had their sunscreens recalled due to the controversy and reformulated for this year. I liked how this sunscreen applied and the texture was nice and light. It just made me too shiny and I ended up layering it with a mattifying sunscreen.

Any sunscreen from a brand that's under CJ, LG, or Amore Pacific is going to be pretty trustworthy. Those are HUGE, huge, huge conglomerates that have multiple brands in different sectors (including beauty). Big labs, lots of money for R&D and they are under much, much scrutiny from the public and investors. They're akin to Johnson & Johnson or Estee Lauder, but even bigger (within Korea).

@@stephpain It depends on what you're looking for but the Missha Waterproof one is good and the Etude House ones are amazing for the price (one is a nanoparticle mineral sunscreen with zero cast, one is a hydrating milk-type chemical sunscreen, both for around $10).

I always lean towards Japanese and European sunscreen. Most Korean sunscreens have too much ingredients. It serves more like a moisturizer to me than sunscreen filter. I always look at the ingredients, the simple, the better for me. Zinc is a must in my list. Thanks for the insight Dr. Dray.

I'm actually really excited to try this sunscreen and this video reaffirmed my decision to go with this one! I'm inside all the time now because of Covid and the winter. I was looking for something to wear daily and indoors that didn't feel heavy or annoying to put on when not even leaving the house. This seems great for that 😁I'll use something more reliable for the summers/outdoors.

Speaking of combination sunscreen, I am very, very curious why most Asian combos use titanium dioxide instead of zinc oxide? Especially when you can get transparent ZO that doesn't leave a white cast, and ZO protects against UVA1 while TO2 does not.
