It's utterly absurd to consider disposing of two fully functional ships that were likely a few million three decades ago. It seems illogical, especially when you take into account that replacing them could potentially cost a billion Pounds and necessitate waiting until 2050, given the current pace of ship construction. It's wiser to retain and make optimal use of these vessels, employing a more strategic and thoughtful approach.

The Future of the Royal Marines is Me...I'm The True King of England What needs to happen....Herr Charles ,who is my affilliate at the Kings Arms Pub in Arundel West Sussex...This is the Person who Impersonated a Royal Marine at StoneHouse Barracks Plymouth, along with his Henchmen....They were given marine uniforms to wear by Alex Seymour, who was a storeman ,at the time. This Group of Civilian Villains, then decided to disarm Marine Jerome Michael Rogan, Whilst on Guard at StoneHouse Barracks Plymouth.....Marine Jerome Rogan Obeyed the Orders of the Guard commander, and was Disarmed by Civilians dressed as Royal Marines. The person responsible is Herr Charles, the manager of the Kings Arms Pub, in Arundel, West Sussex"

Grant shapps asks, what is the purpose of the royal marines?, wrong question shapps, what you should have been asking is, what is the purpose of me?, and the short answer to that is there isn't one.

they are bankrupt. Their airforce is no more. there may be lots of sabre rattling in the media to stir up patriotism, but its all bogus. falkland islands are firmly british and the uk enjoys support from chile & brazil in the ownership of the islands. Ironically the uk and argentina were best friends for a long time before.

If they get rid of those two ships there's no real way to employ the Marines in their actual field until there are replacements. They'd be highly trained, specialist troops without their primary means of operating. Expensive troops!

Grant Shapps? Think?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Never underestimate the duplicity of the Tories. Cameron stood on the Ark Royal, gave a stirring speech about the value of defence then scrapped her the following week. A few months later Tornado’s were flying from Scotland to Libya to bomb Ghadaffi and kill him, leading to civil war, humanitarian catastrophe and mass migration across the Med So I would be a bit concerned if I was a Royal Marine

Makes me laugh given Didnt the conservatives recently champion the idea of more spec force type units , as Grant shapps tries to emininate another crystal ball gazer Philip Hammond former Defence Secretary, who was the hatchet man who culled front line units to form his new look Army based on recruiting 6000 new reservists , aka week-end warriors , sheer folly , he was warned big time , and of course it never happened , even the men and women he made redundant gave him the middle finger even after being offered cash indusements to go part time , all of the above becuase some nameless shirt decided that all future wars would be insurgency ones , which of course must have raised a big smile from Putin , and again today Shapps is in the news re: recruitment problems ! calling for greater female representation in the military amid a collapse in the flow of new recruits . the said problem created by the conservatives when they culled the Armed forces , serious I wouldnt trust him or the other white shirts in Whitehall with action man toys in a sand pit !

The deeper reason of course is why were the cuts so big. And the answer the banking crash. The spivs in the City of London near bankrupted the country, we all had to pay for it and they got off the hook totally scot free!

The fact that Shapps has been shunted from pillar to post speaks volumes. That idiot has had so many cabinet jobs, Home Secretary, Business Secretary, Transport Secretary, Energy and now Defence. At least Ben Wallace previously served in the Army and had an understanding of the Defence world. It beggars belief that Shapps is now in the hot seat.

I'm an Aussie so I don't have any actual skin in the game. I know too, just how difficult budgets & staffing are across the West right now. Still, this whole discussion makes my skin crawl. I hate the idea of the Royal Marines losing such a huge capability. Paras are of course not anyone you'd want to have to fight, however they can't come close to doing a fraction of the things the Marines with their large scale ships can achieve. Also, as an antipodean, I am also very sensitive to the relief operations only ships like these can provide. There are very few countries who have forces like the Royal Marines, so I feel it would be a real loss for the global West if these vessles are deemed unaffordable.

Completely agree with Buster, the guy has legendary status in the Royal Marines, I was proud to serve at the same time as him and under his command. He really should be listened to, of course I am biased as I am an ex Royal Marine, but I also understand the serious capability that the Royal Marines can deliver at short notice when operating from these specialist ships. Also, they are relatively new, which is bonkers, considering the world seems far more unstable now compared to when they were commissioned? Seems like nothing but a financial decision and not a strategic decision to build resilience into our (once great) nation. Also, I am also a taxpayer, so I’m cheesed off that all this investment has gone into these ships, which are going to be potentially scrapped? And, if it does generate a saving to the uk economy, where will the saving be better spent? Hopefully increasing our border security? Come on, someone needs to have a hot cup of common sense here and make the right decision……

Why did the Parachute Regiment have to be trained in amphibious landings for the Falklands war instead of being inserted by parachute?

You know the answer , tyranny of geography, not enough transports nor air to air refueling… no fwd airbase to launch an airborne assault from… paras can air assault, para assault and amphib when necessary. I had an NCO tell me that it’s just a ride to work sir… (helo, para, vehicle…)? God bless the Royal Marines and the Para Regiment…. Heck, all of the UK forces 🙏

@@Mike-xh7wb why do you think that it is utterly ridiculous in response to a comment that amphibious assaults could be replaced by airborne assaults? Do you think it would be possible to insert over 4,000 troops and all their support equipment, ammunition and rations and then keep them resupplied by air, at a distance of over 8,000 miles? I don't think you understand the practicalities of any sort of military operations.

This is painful to watch as an American. It’s like a sick joke to watch a government that doesn’t represent the British people very well, cut away at a military that represents the British people extremely well. A weak British military is not only bad for the British, but the whole world. Especially now with the state the world is in, it feels essential to have y’all ship shape and Bristol fashion

The government has a very short memory, the Falklands proved the need of a waterborne force. The use of amphibious platform is invaluable to any force. The USA has proved that an amphibious force is the key to any successful establishment of a beach head . The use of airborne forces are limited and the need for heavy armour to backup infantry is best done by amphibious assets. They also need to be minded of the specialist area of operations of the Royal Marines. The government needs to think back to the mistakes made prior to both world wars the UK reduced its armed forces. I would prefer the thought that in peacetime any responsible government should prepare for war.

i think the phrase is ... thrown under the bus... is appropriate here. Its like scrapping the old carriers we had before the new ones arrived. When we lost that skill set and trained people, starting over again was much harder. This is one of those cost cutting exercises that will cost much more to fix later on.

@jamesshipp401 The Falklands saw the 🇫🇷 being the perfect ally. They refused to give 🇦🇷 any more air launched Exocets they'd already bought, limiting their delivery to 5. They fully briefed 🇬🇧 on all the technical details of the weapons & systems they'd supplied to 🇦🇷. They flew their jets with the RN & RAF to give them real world experience against sea skimming Super Entendard. Meanwhile the Yanks were pretending to be neutral while passing intel to both sides & lobbying for 🇦🇷 in the "negotiations" they ran. If things had gone worse for the UK in liberating their territories, it would have had a permanent impact on NATO IMO.
