There are several good reasons to change your needle regularly, especially if you are a frugal quilter. First, a dull, bent, or burred needle can damage the hook of the machine resulting in stitching problems. That is an expensive repair, compared to the price of needles. Second, the needle can damage the fabric or the thread, which is another example of where a new needle is the less expensive fix. Finally, an old needle can make stitches look bad, which can result in wasted time if you have to do a lot of unstitching. Two preventative measures are don’t sew over pins and put a piece of fabric or paper over the feed dog area when you are changing a needle so that you don’t accidentally drop a needle into the machine. I’m looking forward to your new series of videos.

I believe I heard you state that " most quilters use 40 weight thread" I and most quilters use 50 weight thread including most quilters and the followers on KZbin. I agree is is an induvidual decission. I just wanted to set the record straight for new quilters out there. Thank you for allowing me to state my opinion also and for making this video for new quilters, You are doing a good job. I have been quilting over 50 years. I started when we had to cut our own templates and before rotory cutters they became popular a few years later as well as popular rulers, I also was taught to hand quilt my quilts. So glad I have been able to see quilting come so advanced and I have embraced the changes.

When I took my beginner quilting class at my LQS, the lady spent a lot of energy telling us how horrible non quilting fabric is. When I stepped away from that, I looked at the quilts in my house that have held up longer than I have been alive… and I didn’t start quilting until I was in my 50s…and they are holding up just fine. So I source my fabric in lots of ways now…and it’s ok. I can’t afford to gift quilts that cost several hundred dollars. Quilting helps my mental health, so I had to find a way to do it economically. Will check out the thread. Been using Hobby Lobby 50wt and I like it, but sometimes I think a thicker thread would look nice on quilting. I tried Connecting Thread and it messed up my machine. A lot of people love it and yay for y’all. I love that we don’t have to do it the same way. No 🚓 coming for me because I went to Hobby Lobby.

Ha! Exactly! For centuries women made quilts out of the fabrics they had, old curtains, bedding, etc. Were they doing it wrong?! Nope! And neither are we! Haha! I too shop at Hobby Lobby and they have lots of beautiful fabric and great deals on notions and tools.

When I was 8 just learning to sew on my mother's sewing machine, I accidentally ran the needle through my index finger. Through the nail and everything. I jerked, the needle broke, but we never found the end of the needle. For the longest time I thought it was in my finger, but it doesn't hurt so it must have not stayed there. I know dumb, but I was very young. I didn't give up sewing and really love sewing. I very much appreciate your very informative videos. Of course, computers and U-tube wasn't around at that time. Not to mention cell phones. Lol. It was back in '64 when I was first learning. My first sewing machine was a JC Penney's machine, and I never changed the needle. Never thought about it. As long as it worked, I was happy. Things we learn along the way I guess that's what makes us, us. Thanks! :)

Oh my goodness, Ouch!!! I'm glad the needle didn't cause any serious damage to your finger! I actually did that same thing about 4 years ago when I wasn't paying attention while sewing scrunchies together (I was making them in bulk for a boutique, one of my many commission jobs I did back then.) and ugh...I, literally, feel your pain! I've actually heard great things about those "vintage" JC Penny sewing machines; I kind of wish they still made them! We're constantly learning when it comes to sewing and quilting, that's part of what makes it so much fun!

I have used that coats and Clark 30wt cotton thread for years. I made a lot of quilts with that thread and never had a problem. However in the past 4 years I have switched to 50wt thread. Aurifil thread is too expensive for me. I have used Connecting Threads 50wt cotton thread for 4 years now and I love it. I have no problems with free motion quilting or piecing. 😊

Thank you for your insights. In particular I am going to try the Coats and Clark Quilting thread, Kindness to New Quilters: I am a fairly new quilter ( although I have been sewing for 50 years). I am 70 years old and took a quilting class 52 years ago (back when you use templates and quliters wonder wheel). This was before rotary cutters... I was a discouraged with the unkind teacher and the lack of encouragment. Flash forward... young quilters like you, Leah Day and Angela Walters and many others have inspired me with your kindness to try my hand again at quilting. (I also have tougher skin at 70 than I did at 18.)

We had lots of laughter and I finished my first quilt and quilted it with hand cut templates and quilted it by hand. It is in my bedroom. It was a sampler quilt.and the class was in the local (only one) quilting and needle work shop in town. So I continued my quilting journey. Glad you are starting again.

Bravo Miriam! Sitting here having my morning coffee watching your video feels like we are having a chat about a common interest. I love your no-nonsense approach to quilting. I relate this hobby to cars...a basic model car gets you to your destination & a Rolls Royce gets you to your destination. The question is: how much do you have to spend? And don't judge. Any chance you'd make that pattern available at the beginning of the series so we can do a little quilt along? I made the SEW wall-hanging you did, and your instructions were so incredibly clear; I'm looking forward to sewing up another of your patterns. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.

I recently stumbled onto your videos and I'm enjoying hearing what you think on various topics. It's different than what I usually hear, which is good! I am neurotic about things so I have to keep reminding myself (and it helps when others remind me) that it's okay if it's not perfect. Some say, only God is perfect. Well I'm not religious, but I like the idea. I don't know if this is allowed, but I thought I'd mention a store (brick and mortar and online), Villa Rosa Designs, that sells very inexpensive patterns and their fabric prices are pretty good. They always have fabric on sale and that's where I go when I'm looking for backing fabric. Plus, they don't charge for shipping! Who does that anymore?!? Thanks for sharing your youthful enthusiasm!👍

If something works for you and you are “happy” with the results, doesn’t matter what others say. I use the same thread you have. I bought lots on clearance from a store that was closing. Some try to make me feel bad for not using more expensive brand. I feel better now. I buy only on sale too 😂 quilting is expensive. You have a new subscriber. Thanks ❤

It’s so nice to hear all the different ways to quilt and not just the rigid way of how you have to do it 😁 We all like what we like from fabric to thread to technique and if it works for you it’s great 🥰 I myself like you are very frugal when it comes to spending money. I love the best but sometimes the best isn’t always the best when you can find a similar item that works just as well for a fraction of the price 👍🏼 I like to piece with 50 weight Aurofil thread or 100% cotton Embroidery thread which some use to attach lace or beading on heirloom children’s clothing or hand smocked garments that I have done many years ago 😍 I find that it is strong and does not break while not taking up space in the seams. I also use 100% machine quilting thread to machine quilt. I have the Coats and Clark thread I just purchased to machine quilt and I’m happy to hear you have experience using this thread as I decided to try it out simply bc of the price 😊 I also do my share of hand quilting and have used the more pricey threads such as YLI, Mettler, ect. which are great and yet I find myself usually using C&C hand quilting cotton thread 😉 I used to use cotton covered polyester thread when I first started quilting bc of the variety of colors then a quilter told me that over time that thread can cause your fabric to wear thin bc of the strength of the polyester thread so I chose to just stick with the cotton on cotton fabric 👍🏼I’m going to purchase the C& C quilting thread from Walmart as I just saw the big difference in price having purchased my 1st spool off of Amazon wow! I’m thoroughly enjoying your channel and look forward to us quilting together as a quilting community of like mindedness 😜I also like the way you explain things without rattling on and on as many KZbinr’s do while trying to make themselves clear. Your delivery is precise and to the point and I like that! So happy I found your channel. When quilting you can do your own thing, absolutely! I've been quilting for 30 years (wow, I'm old) and the things I do today are not the things I started out doing. My preferences and abilities changed over time, and so did the tools I use. I do agree with @Carol_Sews though - don't cheap out on changing your needle or lubricating your machine - 5 minutes maintenance now can save you hundreds of dollars in repairs later! I try to change my needle after every project, especially after piecing a top that's on a foundation like paper. At the same time I clean out my machine and add a drop of oil to the bobbin - you'll thank yourself later! As for fabric, just test (give it a good tug) to make sure it isn't dry rotted - even the best fabrics, if stored badly, can end up a disaster. If it doesn't rip easily you're good to go. Have fun breaking the rules if that's what you like to do - it's your quilt!

Yes, you almost NEVER need to spend full price on anything for quilting! Unless it’s something specific for a project that you need right then. I buy batting by the roll when it’s on sale from Joann’s (Pellon Bamboo/cotton blend is delightful) and same with stabilizers and whatnot. And I buy fabric from Missouri Star frequently as stuff goes on sale. This is where I’m a fan of building a “stash”. Because it’s worth it to get some yardage (or precuts) here and there when it’s on sale and then you can shop your stash. I do love and splurge on Glide trilobal polyester and their Magna Glide Bobbins for my TL18. It truly glides like butter and the bobbins hold so much it’s worth it to me to be able to just quickly pop them in and out. Can’t wait for your memory quilt workshop!! I have so many baby clothes from my 2 toddlers saved to make quilts from and should probably start working on that 😂

I quilt with a Singer bought at Target 15 years ago. It only likes Aurofil thread. Probably because it's an older, basic machine. It gets an annual (mostly) check up from the Sew & Vac store and just keeps sewing right along. Would I like a bigger, better, more modern machine ? yes. Can I afford it ? No. So I keep it happy with Aurofil. And use old bedsheets for backing. I save all pieces of batting, zig zag stitch them together & make bigger pieces. I will use cheap fabric mixed in with quilting fabric. It's all good.

There is a big difference between using serging polyester for piecing and quilting (a big no-no) and using quality polyester for piecing and quilting from a reputable company. Hopefully you will try, for example, a quality poly such So Fine (from Superior thread). Matte finish, strong, no lint, 50 wt so no bulk, and beautiful colors.

I have been quilting off and on for over 30 years so I feel like I know a lot but I found this really informative. On the subject of thread, my latest favorite is the Missouri Star private label thread. I would also note that over the years, some of my machines have been picky about threads and switching to a different weight or brand could often solve a lot of problems. So, with my current machines, the Missouri Star is working great but I might try something else if I had another machine that was giving me problems.

Thank you for so much practical information. I recently tried out your glue basting technique on a small quilt for one of my grandchildren on polyester batting and it worked beautifully. I read a comment from another of your followers who said they use an old credit card to smooth out the glue before attaching the fabric, and I will try that next time so that I don’t end up with occasional blobs that dry kind of lumpy (the batting may have played a role in that). I don’t normally use polyester batting but wanted the quilt to be very washer friendly as the quilt is a floor mat type car racetrack panel. It was one of my first home machine quilted projects and came out just as well as I had hoped, so thank you for introducing that glue basting technique on your KZbin channel. Anyway, I also want to say that I feel that unless I was going to enter a quilt in a competition, much of the advice we find on some quilting channels doesn’t apply to those of us who enjoy quilting for the shear pleasure of creating, so like you, I believe we should use what information and supplies work for us so we can continue to find joy in our quilting. Looking forward to your next segment!

I’m so glad the glue basting worked well for you! The credit card is a great idea to smooth out the glue a bit. I bet the quilt you made if adorable! I love that idea to make a play mat with streets and things for the kiddos to play with! So cute! And yes, I 100% agree with you! Most of us aren’t entering our quilts into a judged competition. We’re making sweet gifts for our loved ones 💖 even when I was making custom quilts for clients, they NEVER noticed the little imperfections. I was the only one who noticed them. I think that might be what taught me what the true importance of quilting is. 🥰

Love your videos. I agree with you - I need to use the fabric I have. There's no room for more fabric. Also I suffer from SABLE - Stash Accumulation Beyond Life Expentancy. Actually I reached that years ago. So I need to sew it up or destash before buying more. The only fabric I buy is something that I need to finish a project. Rarely I will buy fabric specifically for a project for family - e.g., double wedding ring for my grandson and his wife that I've been working on for over 2 years. It's finally almost done - just needs borders. I will send it out to be quilted. I cannot handle quilting a king size quilt on my domestic sewing machine. I am interested in learning about making a memory quilt.

I enjoy your channel. I like that you had confidence to take on commissions as a fairly new quilter, took your dad's suggestion of starting on youtube, and write for a publication. Thread: I learned quilters use cotton thread because it will break and not your fabric. The real savings on quilting, other than prices of fabric, is to quilt it yourself. I quilt my own but need to improve my basic quilting skills. Fabric at JoAnns: Their premium cotton fabric in the quilting section seems really nice. Mostly I buy Keepsake aka Calico and non-premium novelties. Now and then though I see a bolt of Keepsake where the weave does not look as tight. Quilter's Showcase is thin and also can have a loose weave. There are some cute ones. I think it is too thin for quilting, but it is more affordable. I would probably use it for gifts like mug rugs and tissue covers.

When I hear the only use 100% quilting cotton. I point them to the Victorians and their crazy quilts made from all the materials. I would recommend if a person is just learning how to quilt to use 100% quilting cotton because it is easier to work with compared to other fabrics. But it doesn't have to be designer fabrics. Especially if you are just starting out.

Exactly! For centuries quilters used whatever fabric they had on hand. It’s just recently that there’s been this weird movement of, well to be plain-snobbery, when it comes to fabric. Designer fabrics are beautiful and wonderful to work with! I use a lot of it, but I also like experimenting with lots of other types of fabrics. People shouldn’t be made to feel bad because of their fabric choices. That’s my opinion anyways 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am going to check out Missouri Star Fabrics. I will visit the website and see what they have. I am on a fixed income, so I am always checking for sales so I don't pay full price!😅

Haha!!! 😂 Zelda! Yes, changing out the needle is more of a “feel” thing for me too. I think you I’ll like Missouri Star’s fabric selection! They have SO much fabric! Plus you’ll get an extra 15% off whenever you use my link so that’s a great way to save even more. I totally understand being on a budget!

Boy you sure like to break all the rules, but I am also frugal, due to having no extra finances, I will try coats and Clark, aurafil gets a lot of hype, so I have bought a lot of aurafil, but had trouble with popping thread in my old designer 1, then Becky from power tools with thread, suggested gutterman thread, which is what I used to use so I still have alot left, tried it, guess what no more popping thread. As for needles I change needles about once a month or if I hear a difference, and I sew aprox 3 hours a day

I’ve heard great things about Gutterman thread also! Thank you for sharing your experience! I like to think I’m coming up with my own rules rather than being a rule breaker 😂😂 quilting isn’t a “one size fits all” hobby, and I think it’s kind of silly to act like it is 🤓💖 thank you for watching!!!

My Walmart doesn’t have a fabric section! 🥲 I have used their prepackaged solid fabrics before and those are great!
