New R211 Train for Staten Island SIR - R211S Leaving Clifton Yard & Passing Clifton Station in 2024

Here is a video taken in January 2024, featuring the first five-car R211S unit leaving Clifton Yard then passing through Clifton station on the Staten Island Railway! The train seemed to be heading southbound to wherever for testing. Very interestingly, the unit now has American flags and "Danger High Voltage" stickers placed on the carbodies.
The R211S is a variant of the R211 railcar model that will eventually operate on the Staten Island Railway. The Staten Island Railway is expected to receive 15 five-car units for a total of 75 cars, which should adequately replace the 61 50+ year-old R44 cars that currently operate on the line.

The R44 uses 75ft cars whereas the R211 uses 60ft long cars. So I’m looking forward to seeing if the rear end of Clifton’s northbound platform will have a smaller gap, one that’s not too wide for safe boarding.

I wonder if it’s the rails themselves, since the 44s and their flat wheels constantly pound on the rails. Regardless good idea to look at both the wheels and rails

Yea it's not the R211S it's the rails themselves since the R44s has flatwheels pounding on the rails

More likely the rails than the train. Rails are probably 20 years old for sure.

Nice... We were testing this unit on F5 track in the Rockaways before we sent it back to Staten Island. Glad to see they fixed the electrical issues on 103 lol. 👍🏾

That Brooklyn and queens testing apparently happened last year so it has been in Staten Island ever since like October

Yes, the F5 test track testing was during 2023. I saw the cars depart for Staten Island by truck in October 2023 and I believe they have been on Staten Island since then. It seems like no one knows about the 30 day test start either.

I saw one passing Bay Terrace station the other day. No passengers on it and it didn't stop, so I guess either testing or training the crew on the new equipment.

Probably a little of both. SIR engineers have never operated a New Tech Train, so their experience is a bit different while training them. Some of their supervisors trained with us (NYCT) last year getting qualified on the equipment. They were blown away by the new features on this train.

Think it’s more the tracks than the trains. Other videos of these same cars being tested on the Sea Beach and Culver lines don’t have that loud clacking sound. MTA needs to lay down some new rails every 50 years 😅

Yes I suspect the rails got messed up from flat wheels from other cars, but doesn’t hurt to check
