Synopsis: It's 1879 and the rector of the town church has died. A new rector from out of town is to replace him; and he's young and single. The ladies of the congregation and their daughters are pleased. But he immediately encounters opposition from the congregation's men. Will he survive as he introduces change to those set in their ways? Can he keep himself out of hot water?

Excellent. It includes a couple of olde-tyme audiobook regulars Jeremy Clyde and Gabriel Wolf, and they lead a splendid BBC gang; back when the BBC still knew how to treat Victorian drama (and melodramatic comedy) with a sympathetic light touch. '"£810 per annum .. and .. a house" ... "Just you wait .. that's all ...!"' Thanks for this .. and all the others.

Elaine...a young vicar finds himself granted a town parish. His good fortune is not what it appears as local resistance to him grows culminating in a question as to whether he was granted the living by mistake. Pleasant listening and good production values.

I’m about halfway through and finding this story two-dimensional and old-fashioned to the point of narrative paralysis. That being said, it features Jeremy Clyde (of “Chad & Jeremy”) and I always enjoy his distinctive speaking voice, so I suppose I’ll listen to the rest of this thing just for his performance. And the other actors are all certainly pretty first-class.
@michaelmoricz8422 Жыл бұрын
All the convoluted complications of the second half of the story made it far more satisfying in the end. I’m glad now that I listened. :)

What that no good. ....... (Well you can't call a rector a bastard),,, But in my lifetime, I've known priests before.they were priest, that actually were competition boxers. In my and their younger years.years. -- So the point I'm trying to get across to you is. -- He should take off his rector shirt then And then give the other rectord a very good black eye for , What he & the other guy put him through in this play. !!!! ----- YOU WILL SEE. !!! ------------- IT JUST MAKE YOU AS ANGREE. !!! ------------- AS IT MADE ME !!!! ------------- YOU"LL. SEE.....?

In an age of personal introductions, vague flirting and rigid norms comes this classic piece of English manners.and structure. However, you can feel the dark behind the felt curtain. Thank heavens that we found America which over time made all this so fake so pompus.
@iap-ug3oy3 жыл бұрын
Oh ! Dear, so you think us English are pompous…..well thank goodness for that…..I don’t think you can boast about the American people to day …fighting in the streets ,setting fire to property, and walking into shops and steeling ..You are in free fall ……Your President is the laughing stock of the world…..GOOD LUCK TO YOU…You are going to need it……GOD SAVE THE QUEEN.

@@iap-ug3oy Agreed -- thank goodness they found America and took the less desirable away to their brave new world of guns, no health care, guns, money-uber-alles, guns, racism, guns, false sense of exceptionalism, guns, Reagan, Bush and Trump-electing violent, intolerant, cultureless and morally bankrupt country.
