You don't need to install a profile when you buy one already sound fitted. It is ready to go as any other DCC loco. I don't use their app at all for these. I got straight to my usual DCC controller. Steam fitted locos have their own profile and different from the others, so did you select one of these? You may have installed non-steam with sound over steam with sound. I installed a new decoder a couple of days ago and noticed the steam profiles that I hadn't seen before. There are two: SD029 Black 5 and SD035 Black 5: (SS) Steam Generator. You had SD029 Black 5 installed (that's non-steam).

Yes, I have installed the non steam, I didn't appreciate they were different until all these messages. When I first connected to the loco, I couldn't see a profile hence why I added one. Just frustration the correct profile is not available. thanks for the advice saved me time further chasing a solution that was not there.

Four Black 5s were originally named in BR days. Hornby have recently released one as 45157 The Glasgow Highlander.

Are you sure you ordered 2023 and not 2022. I ordered mine on announcement day, 9/1/22, RRP £249.99. Club members could take a 10% discount. Price went up a few weeks later as they clearly got it wrong looking at the price of the non steamy ones. 2 subsequent increases before release, current RRP is c.£320.00.

Did you try F24? That’s the one that manipulates the steam. Or install the A3 or P2 SS profiles?

Hi Matt, great video showing this model, the reason your steam generator is not working is because you have the wrong profile installed on it, while you do have a black 5 profile installed it’s the profile for the black 5 models that do not have a steam generator fitted to them, on the app there is a separate sound profile for the Black 5 with steam generator but it will be available in 2 days time according to the App, I have just checked mine and that is what it says, apart from that though the loco does look very good, 8 added o;e of hornbys new tooled black 5s to my fleet earlier this year, the last crest version named The Glasgow Highlander and it is a stunning model, it’s my first ever black 5 as I have never owned any of the previous versions that hornby made, I have detailed mine up with some of the accessories, while it’s very unlikely to happen I do hope the steam generator will be come available as a part that can be retrofitted to models that take it, I would really like to fit it to my Black 5 but as I say I don’t think that will ever happen, as for the steam generator models I do have one myself as earlier this year I picked up the P2 Prince of Wales and it is a joy to use, the steam really is a game changer and will be interesting to see what other models receive it in the future.

So reading the replies clearly something I have done, when connected to the loco first time, I could not see a profile loaded so I assumed I needed to load one, not appreciating there is a specific one for the steam generator ! Stall an amazing model, a bit frustrating the correct profile is not available. Thansk for the message and help.

If you look at the line drawing on the side of the box it has a date that tells you which tooling it is

You did not install the loco correctly. You have installed the standard loco profile rather than install the preinstalled profile. Hornby has two profiles for this and the steam generator profile has not gone live. But..... then profile is preinstalled onto your Hm7000. This is user error I am afraid

Indeed, user error, at least by going live with the video I am no longer chasing my tail trying to fix the unfixable(until the correct profile is released) thanks to all the comments, but a wonderful model even so.

@@dustyshelfcollectables Yes, it is a brilliant locomotive, Dusty, and they have resolved the tender coupling connection issue that was present in the earlier Black 5 releases five months ago. The retooling, with sound, front lights, and steam, makes this a must-have locomotive. To assist you and others, here are some steps to follow when you install the locomotive and link it to the app: 1. When you link the locomotive to your HM7000 app,, a message will appear stating that a pre-installed profile has been detected. 2. The app will then ask if you would like to install this profile. 3. Simply select the "Yes" option to proceed with the pre-installed profile. 4. Avoid selecting "No," as this will cause you to overwrite the pre-installed profile with any profile you next select. In this case, you selected "No" and must have then selected the standard Black 5 sound profile version. 5. As emphasized earlier, by choosing "Yes," the app will apply the factory pre-installed profile to your HM7000 app with steam. Following these steps should ensure a smooth setup process. I hope this helps.

Just got mine, it has the steam generator profile pre-installed, can get it to run and make the sound but won’t make any steam. Have followed all the relevant instructions but no joy. Disappointed to say the least.

Comparing the two, the steam on the black 5 is not as strong both appear to suffer from the 'blocking issue now and again, but when working ok both are amazing. Steam generator does not work? It has this bug or glitch for my A3 flying scotsman too . But now I have solved it. I suggest sir to push the loco and the tender closely ,especially makes the chips slot closely ,you may see the vapor comes out .

If it’s anything like the Flying Scotsman I have, a careful dab of twisted paper towel down the funnel usually gets the steam coming out again.

You mentioned F23 to enable steam - its actually F24. Might be worth a try even with the wrong profile. I had the same issue with my Hush Hush Steam I just received. During installation the profile was wiped and the new profile is not available for a few days, so I installed the Prince of Wales Steam profile and at least it’s steaming now. You could try installing the Flying Scotsman Steam profile until the correct Black 5 Steam profile is available.

Very disappointing with it not working Check you have the profile for the steam version I thought it was supposed to be updated from the earlier models. The lamps are supposed to be smaller and the tender connection improved. I’m not sure looking at your video that they have been With the steam generator models. I had the flying Scotsman and like you I had the issue with the chimney blocking I did try a couple of changes to the CVs but nothing worked. I contacted Hornby who said to use a small amount of vaseline or petroleum jelly on the inside of the chimney as it stops the water droplets from sticking I put a small amount on a cotton bud a ran it round the inside of the chimney. It now works much better with the full steam effect at the default CVs . I’ve found that it need to apply the vaseline every four to five fills of the tank Hope this helps

Edit I’ve just had a look at the hornby website and it’s the SD035 profile you want. There’s two profiles for the back 5 . Hope that helps

Thanks for the advice, indeed its the wrong profile I have loaded , frustratingly the correct one is not available yet. I have tried the oil trick I used WD40 on the Scotsman and it does work to some extent, but will give the petroleum jelly a go.

Yep I agree you deleted the black 5 ss profile and installed just the normal profile without steam generator your gonna have to wait till they release it which is soon 2 days time if you look in all locos on the app

I’m 90% sure you erased the Black 5 STEAM profile, that should be pre-installed on the chip when you get loco, when you downloaded the one from the App. The steam generator ones have their own profiles eg Scotsman says A1/A3 ‘FS’ (Steam Generator), vs the normal profile that is just A1/A3 Flying Scotsman. Same goes for the Prince of Wales P2.

@@modelrailwaynoob Yes he has over written the steam profile. If he installs any other profile with steam it will work but not with Black 5 sounds. The issue is this has been sent out over Christmas with Hornby shut and not releasing the profile is someone like Dusty overwrites the profile by errors. Mine works fine and is a brilliant loco.

However, if you overwrite, as Dusty has that specific profile cannot be redownloaded from the HM7000 app at the moment. Due to the Christmas period, it seems that no one is available at Hornby to release the new sound profile, so my statement is correct.

Maybe if you had followed the Hornby forum (not FB) you would be aware as they are over there that the SS locos will only function correctly with the SS profile. The standard profile will not work with the SS locos and vice-versa. You will now either have to load a P2 or FS SS profile until after the holidays when Hornby return to work and can release the B5 SS profile to the app. Self inflicted and totally unnecessary In my opinion.

Interesting fact- steam locos have metric parts. Injector cones are normally 8, 10 or 12mm as built by whoever built them. I hate the lamps on this model. Especially the one on the tender. It ruins the model in my opinion.

Hornby R30225SS BR Stanier 5MT Black 5 4-6-0 44726 w/Steam Generator Era 5 Loco I ordered mine on 30 January 2022 at the price of £253.98 almost 3 years ago from Jadlam so hopefully I should receive it soon. I’m quite surprised at the price you are saying you paid for yours surely that cannot be right ? Let’s hope the quality is nothing like the ones without the steam generator, that we’re released not so long ago

I've just check the invoice £224.99, al I can think is I would have been a member of the collector club so maybe I got the 10% off, it doesn't show on the order or invoice and way too long ago for me to remember. The loco is wonderful, just some teething issues the appear to be user error.
