I'm a lover of movies, music (especially Bruce Springsteen), video games, traveling, the NFL, and of course, my family. I graduated from Boston's Emerson College in 2008 with a degree in Television Production / Radio Broadcasting. I'm also an Eagle Scout and occasional hiker. Yeah, remember back when being a KZbin Partner actually meant something? In terms of scummy things KZbin's done recently, I'd honestly put this somewhere on the bottom of the list.

Yep, I'm in agreement. Everybody and their little brother is trying to "make it" on KZbin these days because they have dreams of fame and money, and that's just not realistic or sustainable. You should be on KZbin because first and foremost because you have a creative personality and you love the craft of making videos. "Making it" on KZbin requires being skilled, hardworking, and *lucky*. I can see why people with tiny channels would be mad that KZbin is taking away their $2.50 a month that's kind of like the tiny carrot on a stick giving them a taste of that KZbin money, but you're right. $2.50 is tiddlywinks if you're trying to do this as a job. It probably would have been a better PR move to grandfather in the old channels, but oh well. In the grand scheme of things, this is a step in the right direction, because the 1,000 subscribers requirement now also prevents spam/clickbait channels from trying to get some quick money with garbage content/stolen videos before they get terminated.

The biggest question I have on whether I am ok with this change or not is what happens to the money of the channels that will be removed from the partner program. If google wants to take a small cut from that that's cool, I get it, but if partners don't see any of the spare cash I am going to be mad. KZbin creators have had to suffer a lot of bullshit over the years effectively receiving pay cut after pay cut as KZbin underwent the many terrible changes it has gone through. I HOPE that part of the reason they aren't grandfathering in existing partners that don't meet the threshold is to give the ones that do a raise.

I remember being one of the first channels welcomed into the "everyone can be a partner" thing back in 2010 or whatever. I got an email basically saying "hey, you made videos, never had strikes, and are small; want to be in the 'everyone's a partner' beta." Then I remember they made the threshold 10,000 views and I lost it because I'm at 7,000, and now it's back to the old partner thing where you need to actually be big. Honestly though, I'm cool with this. It's something you earn, make good content, people will eventually find you, and it will weed out the crappy channels like you said. I find it kind of ironic, remember when everyone was all "I want youtube back to how it was in the old days," now it's more like the old days and everyone's upset.

I think this is a step in the right direction to filter out those bad partnered channels. Partnership I feel is something that should be rewarded for those who work hard enough that they earn that status for the right reason. This isn't gonna slow me down from continuing to make more videos. Also, I wished I knew you had a Twitch page sooner. It's definitely becoming a safer haven from what this site has gone through in the last year or so.

I partly agree with you - I’m not earning any money from what I’ve done so far, and I’m not set to do so anytime soon. But my problem is the way that YT Just moved the goalposts. I tried so hard for my channel - mostly military simulations - got recognised for its content. I did all my livestreams, recordings, everything on that channel. Several of the people I know in the same circle who are “safe” from these rules are equally concerned because they see themselves as being only a keystroke away from YT deciding they can’t be monetised either. Let’s say I work hard and make 1000subs this year. What’s stopping YT pushing it to 2000? I just can’t help but feel that the ones who’ve “made it” are quite happy here because it means less competition in the future. As for anyone else who wanted any kind of a chance at this lifestyle - forget it.

Great video as always, I understand why the changes happened but they have annoyed me temporarily. I joined KZbin years ago and was made a partner in 2010 based on videos with almost no views (now all deleted). I think my monetisation only ever got to $0.61. Then I stopped posting for years. About 2 months ago, I decided to regularly turn out content. It turns out I was still a partner but I couldn't monetise until I reached 10,000 views and 100 subs. I was planning on trying to grow my channel over the next year to achieve monetisation. With my 2 months of content, my analytics indicated I'd reach that target by November / December this year assuming no negative growth. These new requirements have crushed these goals and I am unlikely to reach it anytime soon. I aren't making KZbin videos for money (I don't have the time / equipment / skills to make a living from it) but it was nice to think this hobby I was doing might eventually lead to payment. It's certainly a pain for me that these changes have happened. Still, KZbin has done a lot worse to its creators in recent years.
@DynamixWarePro
@DynamixWarePro 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I was around when the partner program was first rolled out (not this channel I had a previous one which I have since deleted) and knew what it meant to actually work hard and earn partner status. I think if that had have stayed this way instead of KZbin allowing anyone to monetise their videos, there probably wouldn't be as much of the problems we see now. Hopefully now this might make people create better videos as they will have to work hard to get the subscribers and views and this should make KZbin better instead of using click bait just to get views and easily earn money. I get why people are upset, but then again as you said they are probably not earning that much if they have been demonetised as 4,000 hours doesn't equal a lot of money. I do get it with the 1,000 subs though as subs shouldn't matter as much as views and watch hours should. You could have a video or more with thousands of views but if you have less than 1000 subs, that would mean nothing as you couldn't earn anything from those videos with the large amount of views until you got those subs. I think one reason KZbin might be doing this is trying and get back some of the advertisers they have lost when they left as KZbin is a business and they have to earn money and need the advertisers to help them do so. I wonder if in the future if this could make the amount that people earn from monetisation, go up since a lot of videos that once could be monetised will not be under the new terms?

I certainly agree with the need for a threshold, but isn't 4000 hours of watch time per year a lot for channels uploading short skits or animations that are only a few minutes long but take weeks to make?

I have to agree, it sucks because on my first channel I've worked my butt off for thirteen years and the best I got was fifty subscribers, yet didn't get anywhere on this platform. But I was going to produce amazing content, and use my earnings on better equipment and work harder with more supporters. But as soon as last year and earlier, there has been shitty youtubers rising up the rankings that have been toxic and cancerous. It's been a big issue and there had to be something done about it. I just wish there was a way KZbin could identify quality and garbage, but that'll take forever to work on. I watched you since 'Is it a good idea to microwave this,' and had the idea, although you did beat me to it in all fairness to say, plus you, Riley and Jory made an amazing team and would've done better than me overall; I would've been a one man show. I wish you luck going forward.

To be honest, and speaking as someone who's just gearing up to do a KZbin channel, I completely agree with what you're saying in this video. I'd rather compete with quality that makes me want to improve what I'm gonna be doing. If just anyone can get on board there's too much room to abuse it and it makes it harder for fresh faces that are serious and want to succeed.

Back first when I started watching KZbin back in around 2010/2011 I remember how big of a deal it was for a channel to be a partner there were very few small channels that were ones. Every one on KZbin who was big back then built there way to the top, hopefully these changes will improve KZbin and bring back some of the things I used to like about the site.

I 100% agree with KZbin and you. You gotta have some kind of requirements and thresholds to get creators to work hard and produce quality content to make money. Not a bunch of people trying to clickbait their way to getting a $100 check from google. I've heard some say that "KZbin used to be a place where anyone can make videos and money, but not anymore." That's just not true. Just like before this requirement, you have to put in time and effort on your videos.

The only thing I wish KZbin would add for their partners is the ability to directly communicate with advertisers. We're all familiar with the advertiser friendly side, but what if creators don't want ads on their videos that are somehow contrary to their brand (such as beauty channels that are opposed to companies that test on animals)?

I think the watch time requirement is a bit on the high side, I'd rather see 2000 hours on that front. Maybe even 1000, but that might be pushing it. The best solution that would appease both sides would be to grandfather in to AdSense anyone that was eligible under the old requirements, and then going forward have KZbin's new requirements be the new goal for people to reach. On the subjects of partnership being an achievement and the Pauls, I think there was instead a bit of a shift as to what was seen as an "achievement". Instead of a partnership at all being an achievement, it was more so getting a partnership deal through an MCN instead of directly through Google. I don't think this change would've stopped the Pauls at all, since Jake would've had his Disney buddies at Maker hook him and his other goons up with Maker MCN partnerships on their channels. I doubt any future Paul-type jackasses would be stopped by it either. Some MCNs seem to attract more douchebags (in a general sense, when compared to a Paul) than others, BroadbandTV sticks out to me as one example. And speaking of MCNs, it's really stupid that KZbin yelled at Social Blade to stop showing which channels are affiliated with which MCN (or not). If anything, this seems like it'd be geared to stop something like the "creators" that are involved in ElsaGate dead in their tracks. That I can definitely get behind. I'm definitely a bit biased in the matter seeing as I'm someone that is eligible but then wouldn't be under the new requirements, but you've got valid points Jon. Might it make the site better? Maybe, tough to say for sure. Will Google do anything in response to the outrage of the ordinary everyman? I doubt it, just like other significant site changes that pissed a lot of people off in the past (Channel 2.0, anyone?).

KZbin as a career is not sustainable, but making some money on the side can't hurt. Want to know how they're screwing over the smaller channels? Every little bit helps. I never expected to make a career out of this, but $3/month can help cover the last bit of utility bills. Why does KZbin have to screw over everyone when there are only a few bad apples in the barrel? Why not tap off the teat these abusers, big and small, are putting a high pressure pump to, and make the process more selective?
@Jon
@Jon 6 жыл бұрын
@Joshua - I'm sorry you're offended, but my attitude isn't "shit" - it's accurate. The Partner Program is something that should be EARNED. I created content for YEARS without earning a nickle. If you're in this for the $3/month, you're doing it for the wrong reasons. > _others who were happy to make a few bucks_ They should be happy to MAKE CONTENT! And what? "fast forward ten years"? You just completely ruined your own argument. KZbin *WAS* sustainable. For an entire decade! Yeah, it isn't now - but I have NEVER suggested this would last forever. Don't lump me into your strawman arguments, please.

@SpannersGerm669

Interesting video Jon, although i dont agree with everything. In my opinion, this isnt KZbin turning on the quality control switch again. Just because a channel is tiny, it doesnt mean they are shitty and just because a channel is incredibly popular, it doesnt mean they are great. Logan Paul for example. KZbin has been a popularity contest, it isnt about the quality. Someone can wear a bin on their head and run over a cliff and get millions of views. That doesnt take any talent whatsoever. Its whoever can get their foot into the latest craze. It sucks what happened to your channel with your money, but that doesnt mean that someone else cant feel disappointed if they are losing money as well. Shit happens, thats life. Some people will have it better than you and some will have it worse off. The reality of it is, being a KZbinr as a full time job is an easy gig. You enjoy it while it lasts, but thats the thing with this platform ... you need a back up plan.
@Jon

"Easy gig" -- You sound like someone who has no fucking idea what they're talking about! Also, who said anything about tiny channels being "shitty"? Strawman argument much? I agree with you some of the content is suspect and you tube is cleaning up. I am a very small channel who was trying to get my 10000 views. Granted I'll never make money to live on but it's a little disappointing. But I'll stay with you tube . If I get my 1000 subs it will be an accomplishment for me. But that's it nothing more. I have fun making my videos and interacting with others. What rules are so be it. It's their choice. With all the negativity going on with their fussiness you cannot blame them. It will be interesting to see what happens with all the competition with Amozon and face book making plans. I go on with my fun making videos. That's really what I am here for. Tough on those who had plans to make a business of it. Ligitmatley of course. The others with click bait and bad content ...,good luck to them. Oh I do disagree with your pint of you tube did not have any requirements. They just were to easy to get. The long time channels will carry on, but you tube will see a loss of channels with competition. Of course depending on the requirements of the competition....I go on...lol. thanks for the heads up.

No more $2 for me, hahahaha. I don’t really care. People with as many views as me don’t get too much anyway. I haven’t even hit the $50 threshold to cash out haha EDIT: Why are most of these comments about Jon “coming back”? I don’t remember him leaving...

The people I see bitching about getting monetization taken away are channels that sporadically posted videos and low sub counts....... sorry if you got “fired” , but this is the equivalent of showing up To a job and doing no work.....and it doesn’t matter previous management let it slide......

It took me 8 years to get monetized, we should be grandfathered in. They better pay out those who get kicked out or there will be lawsuits out the ass.

"pay out" what? You signed a contract. "Lawsuits out the ass"? HAHAHAH - that's hilarious.

Hilarious how Jon is still so salty about how youtube made it easier to get into the partner program and complains about shitty channels when his own videos from the last 5 years are boring rants with no more than 10k view each. Talk about gatekeeping.

Are you saying my channels are shitty? And shitty channels deserve to be Partnered, right? Kind of confused as to your point here. 🤣
