100% agree. Eating has been redefined as a recreational activity in modern times. It is extremely difficult to become aware. Folks ask me all the time "How can I do that?" in reference to my obvious weight loss. I tell them. I then receive the response: "I can't do that. I like eating too much." The real gateway drug is, and has always been, sugar. That statement is in no way hyperbolic. It took me way too long to shake that programming.

All I can say is: If I hadn't gone keto for 2 years and then carnivore for the past 2 years, I'd be dead. My doc told 4 years ago my health was so bad, I probably wouldn't make it to 74 because my blood pressure sky high and I was 100 pounds overweight. Today I'm 75, my blood pressure is normal, and I weigh the same as I did when I was 23.

Before I went on a carnivore diet, I followed a "balanced" diet. My diet did not consist of 60% garbage processed foods. 90% of my diet was home cooked meals made by my wife who is an excellent cook. The 10% were my indulgences, ice cream, ginger ale, the occasional bag of chips or popcorn. Yet somehow over the course of my 40's I put on 50 lbs... exercise be damned. If you consume a "balanced diet" where the majority of your energy comes from carbohydrates, your metabolism will eventually have a rebellion, your pancreas becomes tired, your liver has no choice but to turn those extra carbs to fat in order to save you from an even earlier death. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in June 2023. I did not want to die like my father due to complications from T2D, so I decided to try carnivore. In July 2024, at 53 years old, I am thinner than I was in high school, down 60 lbs, my blood work is normal, a plethora of insidious health problems are starting to disappear, and my endocrinologist says I am no longer diabetic. I still enjoy the odd snack, but 90% of my diet is carnivore.

Hunger going away is an underrated benefit. I spent most of my life stuffing myself completely from morning to evening and never, ever reaching satiety. I would actually suffer intense despair when I reached the point where I couldn't eat any more (I was too full) but was still so, so hungry. Now I eat once a day, and am nowhere near full when I finish my meal, but I'm fully satiated. Very little cooking/cleaning involved, too.

What kept going through my mind listening to these 2 is that it is the nutritionists and their food pyramid that got us into this problem in the first place. So why would I listen to a classically trained nutritionist? And he's so sure that carnivores must eat fruits and vegetables at some point. In just over a year I have had maybe a few blueberries and very few vegetables. And Dr Westman had discussed many times after eating vegetables you get gastric upset/bloating or diarrhea. I know if I eat off I will feel it for a day or two. And get ankle swelling. Just how my body reacts. Thank you doc!

I returned to eating one-third cup of frozen kale and one cup of fresh romaine lettuce per day after trying a diet consisting almost entirely of meat, some cheese, and dairy for three months. I put on weight because I stop eating at each meal based on the volume of the food that I consume and I was eating a huge amount of meat. Too much meat for my activity level which is quite high but not high enough to eat that much meat. Adding the leafy green vegetables to two meals makes the volume of the food look so much bigger that I feel satisfied with far less meat. It wasn't until Dr. Westman stated that one of the major reasons why the keto diet works is that most people eat less calories because they are satiated with the fat and protein that I realized that the total number of calories that I was eating each day had skyrocketed to over well over 600 or 700 calories a day more than I had previously been eating while consuming far more yogurt and some grains and too many fiber-rich and thyroid-destroying vegetables. I was able to put on weight on the carnivore diet while jogging and walking and lifting weight and burning about 800 calories a day.

@alexr6114 On the SAD diet I never felt satiety. When I first started eating carnivore I was eating huge quantities because I was so hungry. Over time now though I actually know when I'm hungry or not. The amount of food I eat is about half as much now. Never been much of a fruit eater, but I love vegetables. I eat them rarely because I get so gassy and bloated. Still eat some avocado. And occasional glass of wine.

I was raised on the SAD diet as a kid, I was sickly, suffered chronic IBS, fatigue and brain fog. I altered my diet in my adult years to consume mostly vegetables, grains, lean meat and oil because my doctors all said to, I got more sick. I had Hypothyroid, CFS, FM, and if I twisted a cap off of a jar the veins in my hands would rupture. I had osteoarthritis in my hands and spine, torn meniscus in both knees, and I was in agony. I was diagnosed with clinical depression. I couldn't do anything. I wanted to die. I've been on the Carnivore diet for 5 months now and the changes in my health are remarkable. I'm now fast walking with weights for 30 minutes everyday. Never in my life have I been able to do that. My thoughts now of eating vegetables and most fruits is like taking a cyanide pill. I want nothing to do with it. I've found some semblance of health, and no one is going to pee on my leg and tell me it's raining. I won't give up meat.

Former nurse here. Nutritionists don't always know best, and I found this out when I was working in long term care and had about 12 diabetics under my care. A few of them had hyperglycemia episodes daily due to poor diet and desserts offered at the end of meals, so I was injecting extra insulin units daily. One resident would have a fit each time her sugars were high because I didn't allow her to eat dessert. The nutritionist actually told me that regular desserts would not cause a problem, but trust me, they did! She was not the one taking care of the diabetic residents on dialysis, many of whom had various amputations.

What's sad is that you can easily incorporate desserts if you change them up a little. I love desserts, but had to change up my desserts when I switched to low carb. That lead me in the direction of heavy cream desserts. Possets are awesome, versatile, and easy to make in batches. I just use allulose instead of regular sugar. Some carbs from fruit, but it's a very small amount when you compare them to normal desserts.

CArnivore 4 + years - nearly 57 - I was so crazily sick before with strange things that I thought was normal - eg no sleep, voices in head, dropping things, biting my tongue, mental confusion, brain fog, memory loss, anxiety (began in 40Ss) depression, suicidal thoughts (began late 40s) apathy for life, negative head, anger, mood swings, fell out with people, arthritic 2 fingers, tinnitus began, hot flushes, chronic cystitis, adult spots, major hair loss, brittle nails, rigid lines on nails, white spots on nails, stigmatism developed, teeth crumbled, allergies heightened, chemical sensitivity got crazy, very grey hair, dry eyes, receding gums, bleeding gums, heart palpitations, shortness of breath - UK size 10. so not overweight, gout in toe, ear wax, acid reflux, major headaches for years and years. knee pain, scoliosis diagnosed, neck pain - it would crunch and my head felt too heavy for my neck, knee bubble wrap popping, vertigo, procrastination, paperwork confusion, making very bad financial decisions, compulsive erratic buying, binging on carbs and sugars all the time, but in my head I was not a sugar person as I did not take it in my coffee. Veggies made me sick - poisoned by oxalates. ALL above gone - also I am de ageing - best for me is FATTY lamb ribs, FATTY steak, butter, smoked salmon, eggs and raw egg yolk and raw beef. I did in the beginning eat a lot of liver. Way of eating change over the years. Realised dairy does not help with mood swings makes it 100 times worse.

The Carnivore way of eating is only considered a ‘fad’ diet because only a few people have been doing it for many years. As time goes on some will revert back to eating a varied diet with carbs etc., but anyone who has healed/reversed their health problems will most likely stick with carnivore for life. I certainly intend to.

Dr Westman thanks to your teaching from January 2024 at Adapt Your Life I have held fast to eating with cup of veges. Have MS and took a bad fall in February at the conclusion of the course but kept on :) I stalled a bit and attribute to MS complications but decided to try Carnivore (stricter Keto) on June 1st. I was eating meals from a "healthy meal program for older adults and others who want it need assist with meal prep". I was throwing out the potatoes, rice, carrots and only eating green beans and asparagus in a meal. After severe gastrointestinal issue and (incontinence of stool which could be the MS). I was horrified and decided to trial a stricter diet and try cooking myself after 4 years. Exhausted at first and full time with secondary progressive MS but notice a couple of days ago a teeny bit easier. Weight down and though not my primary goal to start all this was overweight but no amount of salads and healthy foods did a thing until carb restriction. Hoping the benefit continues and with more carb restriction will see. You gave me hope by your professional and kind presentation to everyone with whom you interact. Thank you! Long ramble but listened to this and your take and all I just expressed is confirmed. Did I say thank you? :)))))) !!!

I read this paper a few months ago and was interested but also tickled. I was in college in the late 60s, and the school had a heavy social/behavioral science emphasis. Very frequently there were surveys about our knowledge/experience with counterculture -- dress styles, music, hair, drugs, whatever. I thought it amusing that they found it necessary to "study" us in that way. After all, there we were, living our lives pretty much in plain sight, but I guess we seemed alien somehow. I had a hint of that same perspective when I read this paper. Carnivores are everywhere -- maybe even in the house next door. But the researchers seemed to treat them as an exotic species. I am glad that folks thought carnivore was important enough to look at, but still amused, and also a little saddened that it is apparently not natural to just talk to neighbors.

I’m dumping oxalates- it’s rough….and I love all foods , I enjoy a piece of fruit every few days, and I use a bit of onion or garlic on my meat….but I feel alienated from most people…..but all medical has told me “at my age….etc.,” so I’m on my own ! I don’t want my eyes cut, and I’ve yet to find evidence that carnivore mammals get cataracts, also one vet advised. ‘If your dog is developing cataracts eliminate his carbs to slow that process….”,……so maybe I should just go to a vet for bloodwork .?? Thanks, I get, grass finished beef ( not grain fed ever ), water buffalo yoghurt, lots of water - more than 4 litres/day, Pasture eggs, various cheeses….. yes I fall off, for chocolate, fructose and suffer with hives/rashes overnight when I do…..

I have learned that food does not have to be entertainment. It is nourishment and fuel for our body. Food company and cuisine marketing has brainwashed people into thinking food has to be novel and varying. Does a dog or cat or any animal you can think of complain that they eat the same thing every day of their life? No. They eat for survival. Yes, that makes humans different but that kind if thinking can also be detrimental.

The Inuit ate meat(fish) raw(frozen) regularly, they just chewed on sticks of fish basically. Vitamin C is known to be not particularly heat-resistent. So the question is if we still get enough Vitamin C from meat if we eat it well done mostly. I guess carnivores also eat butter and some "raw" yolks when they make fried eggs and might have medium steaks, so the meat/yolk isn't losing most of its water soluble vitamins. Also from what I've read in the past it seems like our need for Vitamin C is not very high, it's just that the sailors of old that got scurvy basically got no Vitamin C at all, as they mostly consumed canned foods and nothing fresh on their months long trips.

Carnivore is not a "fad" diet, it is the ancestral appropriate diet we as a species ate for hundreds of thousands of years. The high-carb diets we eat now are the fad; a result of an extinction event that happened 10,000 years ago that required us to start eating plants to sustain ourselves. Vegetables, essentially stems and leaves, have NEVER been a part of our ancestral diets. They offer nothing for survival; not protein, no fat, no crabs. We can't even digest them. Just ask anybody with a colostomy bag. Vegetables in our diet are a modern convince brought to us by the 7th Day Adventists. Most of the vegetables we eat are also man-made.

About vitamine C. Consumption of raw reindeer meat and blood is not only an age-old custom of the peoples of Northwestern Siberia, but also a prevention method for scurvy. The cause of scurvy is a deficiency of vitamin C, and there are few other sources of it available year-round in the tundra besides meat and blood. Therefore the early Russian explorers who settled lands east of the Urals also began to eat the same diet as the locals.

Thanks Dr Westman - another really interesting and thought provoking video. Does vitamin C truly exist? The sailors that supposedly had scurvy were very far from home and had almost certainly eaten all the live animals (and eggs from their chickens) they took with them - they would have been living on barrels of long gone off salted meat, ships’ biscuits and the remains of their barrels of water. (it was always the lower deck crew who got sick first by the way as the senior officers had the best food.) Were they vitamin C deficient or were they starving and just deficient in fresh meat? When they found land they would immediately hunt for fresh meat/fish as well as collect what vegetables and fruit they could. They would be back to fresh meat and fish not just random fruit that happened to be available. These men with scurvy supposedly got better with fresh fruit but they would have also been back to eating fresh meat and fish. The trials of the chemical they call vitamin C found that fresh whole fruit cured everyone but the chemical vitamin C only cured some - how were those trials run? Did some have fresh meat and some didn’t? Were they even remotely scientific trials as Dr Westman would understand them or were they biased trials run by the makers of vitamin C? These things are important as we have a world now where people are obsessed with ‘vitamins’ and I’ve seen, on medical FB groups for example, that many people think that we mainly eat to get vitamins and if they take a multi vitamin (chemical cocktail) then they are some how safe whatever they eat. We also see people even in the LCHF and carnivore world who are obsessed with vitamin D where that is that just a level in our blood that shows our level of sun exposure? They found a chemical concoction that raises that ‘number’ in blood tests and they call that concoction vitamin D but are people genuinely healthier if they have higher vitamin D levels in their blood from taking the concoction?? Is the whole belief in vitamins another misunderstanding (con IMHO) like official dietary advice, virology and most of allopathic medicine?

It has amused me that some people say how to get enough energy as a carnivore. Ok, eat 200g more fat and you've got quite a bit of energy and it wasn't a very big portion to enjoy.
