The only reason Dumbledore took such an interest in Harry was because he needed Harry to be strong so he could sacrifice Harry for the good of the prophecy. He didn't need to like that for Tom.

As a kid I see Dumbledore as how 11 years old Harry see him, strong, wise, kind, polite and overall just this warm strong guardian. as an adult Im disgusted by him however. He is far older than Voldemort if I recall, and Voldemort is around 70 when he died. Yet he is so childish, selfish, and indecisive. He can solve everything all on his own if only he take a step to do it but he rather sit back and then die while leaving silly tips for Harry.

He can't solve everything, the moment voldemort took seriously the prophecy dumbledore can't solve anything, because the prophecy said that voldy will choose the person who will defeat him and that one is harry so harry should solve everything. Dumbledore just give harry all the tools needed to succeed, he is not a guardian his a mentor. Also if he would solver everything you would think that the harry potter books would be more boring? I find it disturbing that the Half Blood Prince movie showed Fred and George selling love potions. I hope the rumored Harry Potter tv show will show Tom Riddle’s backstory in Season 6. What is most disturbing is that Dumbledore stood by and did nothing when the wizards he know grow up to become powerful dark wizards (Grindelwald and Riddle). Dumbledore should’ve learned his past mistake with Grindelwald.

Seeing the portrayal of young Tom Riddle is chilling. All murderers and conquerors started off as children, and I couldn’t imagine walking into a 1st grade classroom, watching kids play, and have the knowledge that one of those kids would be capable, and gleefully commit tremendous atrocities. Even with so much stacked against Tom Riddle, he was still just a young child at one point.

@@thestrong2401 I don't think so. I remember when I was a kid I was so... Weirdly too 'kind'. At some point I even refused to eat anything but rice and vegatables because I cannot fathom killing animals and consuming them. I was 4 or 5 years old, and this was more than 15 years ago, back when computer was blocky and Yahoo is huge. Vegan word probably didn't even exist. Nobody thought me, nobody tell me, I just feel like that, so very strongly infact I still gag when I force myself to eat meat nowadays. If I was born like that I truly believe people can be born with a talent, or a personality that is unaffected by their surroundings. Like how some children are born terrifyingly smart to the point they can go to universities or even teach at universities when they're barely a kid. Or how some kids are extremely gifted since they're birth, their arts rival even the professionals, or those kids who can beat chess masters effortlessly. Or that 6 years old that sh00t teachers recently. I dont think every single people is born like a white sheet, there's something already there, something that make them 'them'. A personality, a talent, a quirk, anything. A bit unrelated but by 'too kind' I mean not only I can't eat meat, I also would donate everything, i mean everything I have if somebody ask. Nobody thought me this, no cartoons I watch ever do this, nobody told me to do this, I just does. I would give away all my lunch money, my stuffs, everything. Its not kindness, its just endless act of weird obsession of kindness. Infact I need to be taught that I need to stop doing it and that I need to be selfish, it blew my mind away when I realised some kids took advantage of me. Such action simply didn't exist in my mind. Even until now I feel creeped and and feel disconnected from my young self, I did not know why I did that and I feel like I was born just like that without my choice.

Who knew? Maybe deep down inside of little Tom, he was curious to know what love truly is and why some people think highly of it but he had never been given an actual reason to pursue that curiosity because he had never taste the wonders of love. So, he just left to believe it meant nothing to him since love doesn't play any important role in his life. It's sad really... He's just a lonely boy without anyone he could call "family" so it's not surprising he would choose to pursue power and immortality since those are obviously worth a lot in his eyes. I won't even be surprised if deep down he didn't really care for blood purity but pushed that ideology into himself because it's Slytherin's ideology and he so badly wanted to be an important wizard as the Slytherin heir after finding out his parents didn't want him. All of the pursuit for "pureblood supremacy" could just be a ploy to fill the hole that he is needed for something and didn't want to accept the reality of being an unwanted orphan. I do feel pity for Tom Riddle but I have no empathy for Voldemort since as he's no longer human at that point and is beyond redemption. I feel bad for the little boy who had never been given a chance to love and were forced to live in darkness and eventually, choose to walk the path of darkness. It's weird really, his situation is a little similar to Credence except Credence can feel love but wouldn't Dumbledore realized the tragedy of Tom's backstory and relate it back to his poor nephew? He may not be able to save Credence but he could save Tom if he had noticed but that's just my observation

The true villain in making Tom Riddle the most evil wizard of all time is the system. No school were you sort students into "houses" is ever gonna make a good school. "Houses" only encourage rivalry and teachers looking too their own house first. This makes students think they are either inherently bad or good right from the start. And some students who might have been best friends never even speak too each other, just cause they are in different houses. This is especially true if one house is "famous" for producing the most dark witches and wizards of all time. Tom was never given that chance to just be with other kids in a normal way.

Lets just say Dumbledores treatment of Tom didnt exactly help the situation. Intimidating a kid inevitably makes him crave more power as an adult,so he will be the one thats feared by others Not saying he would have been ok otherwise but Dumbledore made it worse.

Not really. The kid already showed disturbing tendencies such as terrifying his own fellow orphans, killing another orphan's pet rabbit by manipulating it to hang itself from the rafters- all without getting himself caught. Those are hallmarks of sociopathic behavior, and being exhibited at such a young age. So to say Dumbledore "made it worse" is like saying throwing a drop of oil on a chemical fire blazing completely out of control on an aircraft carrier made the fire worse.

The primary difference between Harry & Tom is that Harry got to see what love is, he may have not received it like Duddly did, but he knew about it enough to crave it, especially after he got to experience Ron's family's dynamic. Harry potter wanted to give his future child what he couldn't have received from his abusive adoptive family, while Voldemort wanted absolutely nothing to do with love because his experience with love was a perverse twist of love unlike what Harry saw with Ron's family. Voldemort could have turned out decent if he was exposed to something like what Harry got to experience with Ron's family. If it was Voldemort who got to experience that love from Ron's mother instead of Harry then Voldemort would have turned out to be a decent individual, he would need a lot of therapy of course. When children's protective services show up in child neglect cases they do give therapy. Maybe that's a big failure of the ministry of magic. Perhaps if Voldemort did know about his degenerate mother's family then perhaps he would have rejected the pure-blood nonsense in rebellion because he would have seen it as the root of his suffering. If Tom could have seen his mother rot in Azkaban for child abuse then maybe he would have wanted to become a Auror or politician who pushes to ban love potions?

I wonder if it would have helped if Tom had been sorted into a house other than Slytherin? He may have been ambitious and even cunning at the age of 11, but there may have been other qualities, more submerged, that could have pulled in a different direction. Hermione, with her intellect, could have been in Ravenclaw, but the Sorting Hat recognised her admiration of courage and put her in Gryffindor. If there had been any yearning for true acceptance in Tom's mind, the Hat could have put him into Hufflepuff, and that may have taken the edge off his ambition and showed him the value of true friendship and loyalty.

Voldemort and Harry were raised in similar ways. Both were raised without loving parents or real friends, but Harry had to endure an even far worse treatment from his uncle, aunt and cousin. But only Voldemort became evil. Why? Because people are different. Tom Riddle gave hints of lacking empathy since his early childhood, when he was said to torture and hurt his orpahange colleagues. If he has raised in a loving home, he probably would became a snobbish, selfish and cold man. Just maybe not a criminal or murderer like he is now, but he still would be an unpleasant person. Because some people are just born like that: fucked up in the head. I imagine Umbridge as having the same mental condition as Voldemort. The only difference is that she had an "ok" family. That's why she didn't became a dark witch like him, but still turned out to be a cold, uncaring person. Lack of empathy is usually a trait inherited from birth. A healthy education can shape it and minimize someone's psychopathic tendencies, but not erase it completely.

Slughorn could have been more of a father figure to him too and maybe there were other teachers and students who may have been able to give Tom some sense of being included and worthwhile. It's not all on Dumbledore to mentor him but I think he wasn't headmaster at the time but likely teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts. One would think that Dumbledore might have been somewhat clued in that Tom was way more interested in the Dark Arts and how to do dark magic rather than defending himself against it and could realize that Tom needed some help. If Dumbledore couldn't take Tom into his confidence then surely it would be a public service to try to get another teacher to get on Tom's good side. Slughorn was uniquely qualified for that.

When Tom was young, he'd lead other kids from the orphanage to a cave (the inferi cave where one of his horcruxes would later be placed) and would mentally torture/abuse them. I don't think there would ever be a timeline where Riddle didn't go bad. He was born not from genuine love, but from a false connection fostered by magic, and so he himself would never be capable of understanding love. It was even shown in the movies that when he invaded Harry's mind, the feeling of "love" that Harry felt towards his friends genuinely cause Voldemort to experience physical pain

Maybe. But hindsight is nearly always easier than foresight, and keep in mind Dumbledore was not a father, had never been a father, and failed as a caretaker--to his own vast regret. What might have worked was if Tom Riddle had been adopted by a wizarding family at a very early age--by the Weaseleys for example. Best if his mother had stumbled across them, given birth, then was raised among them with love.

When kids are constantly leaving to new families and you're stuck watching them leave one by one, never being chosen for a family, you might ask why. Plus when growing up Tom lived in an orphanage it was during the Great Depression and immediately after he went for his second year at Howard, WWII broke out + everything with Grindelwald. (There's a lot that could be talked about with parallels between Riddle and Grindelwald and Dumbledore, but I wanna focus on the child.) When you're faced with harsh times and adults don't give you the time of day until you go to a magic school and they praise you for your spellcasting, the only love you've ever known is the artificial amazement and praise from power. Not trusting adults, chasing power, and creating your base of morals on your own when suddenly you realize you're the heir of this founder of Hogwarts who was powerful and had a set of morals that didn't conflict with what Tom learned about life already... It's pretty understandable how Riddle turned out the way he did.

I think Albus may have indeed seen a lot of himself in Tom Riddle in the fact that Tom was such a skilled wizard at such a young age as Dumbledore himself was. And believe he not only saw shades of himself at that age but also of Gellert and Dumbledore selfishly decided to not become a fatherly figure to Tom in fear he may set another dark wizard on their way, but in choosing to do what he thought "was right, not easy" turned out to be a bad move with Tom Riddle who did need a father figure to look up to and aspire to be like.

I think your initial statement is correct, Tom was doomed from his birth. However someone like Tom is just inherently evil. If dumbledor were to catch Harry stealing I think he would have said the same thing to Harry that he said to Tom. Harry however wouldn’t let this be a hatred for dumbledor but a learning experience instead. Tom was given parently figures throughout his life but still chose darkness. Some people can’t be saved.

I thought because he was conceived because of the love potion he was incapable of love. Not that Tom thinks love is unnecessary but that he was unable to ever feel love or understand it. I guess I always thought that Tom could never truly be anything other than evil because he cannot feel love and only knows hate. He hated everything about his life so he created a new persona to become and that persona of Voldemort was the vessel that carried his evil nature to new heights.

There is nothing Dumbledore could have done to steer Tom in the right direction. While it was unintentional from Merope, her tricking Tom Sr. into taking a love potion had consequences when it came to Tom's birth. He was incapable of basic human emotion from the moment he was born. His parents love was not genuine, it was manufactured and forced. The magic involved in his creation essentially cursed him or "damned" him, depending on which way you look at it. This is all heavily reinforced at the battle of Hogwarts, before Voldemort dies. Harry pleads with him to find a little remorse for everything he has done, Harry is attempting to give him once last chance to repair his soul because Harry seen what was in store for Voldemort once he passes away. He attempted to make Tom feel something, anything, that resembled remorse, but he still wasn't capable of doing it because he can't. Is Voldemort a victim in any real sense? Since that seems to be the point of the video... I would say he is only a victim of his mothers poor decision making in her desperation. She didn't know all the consequences that come with her deceptional magic so I don't want to make it seem like I entirely blame her for what her son became because it was unintentional, but her actions still lead to the consequences of Tom's birth and behavior. People should consider the love potion because it is a form of deceptional magic being used inside of a potion to create fake feelings of love. Tom Jr was under the influence of that magic during his conception.

A person's biology and upbringing can only be blamed for so much, otherwise no one with mental illness would ever be guilty of anything. There has to be some accountability on Tom's part. @@realjoemavro I agree with you but Tom had negative consequences from a love potion. He is still accountable for his actions which is why I said the only way he could be considered a victim is from the aspect of his un-natural birth, which was entirely out of his control. It's mentioned he didn't even cry during his conception if my memory serves me correctly. But the point I was driving at was he stopped being a victim once he started making his own choices. The content creator was making it sound like he's a victim and I was explaining the only example of him being a victim was the love potion and his birth. lol Beyond that, he's not a victim in the slightest.

From what I've observed in real-life stories, the worst villains, madmen, and psychotics all seem to come from a *combination* of inborn mental deficiencies and traumatic life stories. Tom Riddle was, alas, a textbook case. On the one hand, while it's been pointed out that Harry had a similarly bad start in life, but turned out better, I'd point out that he wasn't born with the Gaunt family madness in his DNA. Conversely, Luna's no monument to mental stability, but was raised with real love and kindness, and still had some valuable friendships. Tom needed a two-part interventionist strategy, including both the kind of mentoring that's hypothesized here, but also some place to go besides back to the orphanage when he wasn't at Hogwarts: just having a "host family" like the Weasleys could have changed everything.

I have to say the bad bad thing. I think Tom Riddle, in my opinion, is a pure psychopath. No amount of love or nurturing could save him. I think his hatred for himself and his race is so big that it would be impossible to change his perspectives. However if like Slughorn, more professors and students tried to teach him in Riddle’s style of learning, he could change his perspective of muggle borns and half bloods. But I still believe with his mind, he would accept muggle borns and half-bloods in his cause. I think he would always find some cause that would cause war no matter who he accepts or not. I also think with psychopaths like Riddle, they can still twist right or wrong. They know why their actions are wrong, but they may not care. They focus on their needs and wants. But it was interesting seeing his friendship with Slughorn because it came from mutual respect and learning.

Due to the 'trace' being able to pick up on underage magic, the Ministry of Magic surely must have known about him (also assuming this is how Dumbledore knew where to find him to inform him that he's going to Hogwarts). Is there really no magic-world equivalent of an orphanage that could have taken him from the one he was in? Surely it wouldn't have been difficult for wizard-kind to get him out of that orphanage and into one of their own. If he did go to a wizard run orphanage, maybe he wouldn't have developed such a high 'superiority complex' (abusing those around him who weren't magical) and would have been prevented from/punished for using his powers, the way he did, on the other children around him. This might not have fully prevented him becoming Voldemort, but it could have helped him be less evil.

Dumbledore saw a lot of his younger self in Tom Riddle in that both Dumbledore and Tom Riddle were incredibly skilled wizards at such a young age, and also saw shades of Grindelwald in Tom Riddle and treated Tom Riddle the way he did out of fear that by encouraging Tom Riddle he would set another dark wizard on their path, but by doing what he thought was 'right but not easy', made a fatal mistake with Tom Riddle who needed someone to look up to and view as a father figure.

and sought power so he could never feel that way again. I mean, growing up in an orphanage where he was alienated for being different, there was a high chance that everyone made fun of him until he started scaring them, and thus learning that fear was a good way to protect himself. Growing up the middle of a war, he would have feared for his life at any given moment and would have developed a natural fear of death desire to become powerful like those who controlled the war. Then came realization he wasn’t ‘weird’ like he had been told his whole life, but even in the eyes of another wizard (Dumbledore), he was still being treated like he had done something wrong before he even did it. Coupled with the discrimination all Slytherins face, then how the Slytherins must have treated him horribly at first, thinking him a Muggleborn, every part of Tom Riddle’s life was set against him from the start, and he was never shown a world where he was allowed to be vulnerable and trust other people. Dumbledore certainly didn’t help when he told a boy living in the middle of a Muggle war that he was not allowed the safety of Hogwarts despite most of the magical world probably being safer in the face of the Blitz. Hogwarts was also part of Tom’s heritage, in all technicalities, he could have been allowed to stay because he was the Heir of Slytherin, and Dumbledore knew this. Tom had been denied the safety, reassurance, and stability he craved so much since birth, over and over again by adults and treated as ‘different’ his whole life, leading to his distrust of people and desire for power. I think there were many things that could have changed the course of his life, but his childhood ultimately would not have changed regardless of how Dumbledore and those at Hogwarts treated him, because the orphanage trained him to crave power and care only for his own self-interest. On the other hand, Harry grew up a lot worse than Tom, being treated like a slave and probably being abused by the Dursleys, but unlike Tom Riddle, the Dursleys became an example to Harry of what love and caring was like. Harry craved something he could see and define, and despite being alienated, Harry was made to be naive due to how the Dursleys attempted to dumb him down to protect Dudley’s self-esteem. Tom had no such example, and so he thought: ‘If I don’t have it, and I’m doing just fine, doesn’t that mean I don’t really need it and it’s not as great as everyone says?’

I think Tom didn’t have a chance. I agree he was never meant to be born. His callousness and inaccessibility to experience love was the magical “karma” of being conceived via magical compulsion. The child born of magical compulsion and not love is born damaged in their ability to experience love. I offer 3 cases of circumstantial evidence in addition to Tom, yea, some are a stretch, but… Leta was conceived and born while her mother was ensorcelled away from her true husband by Leta’s father. Leta had that piece missing. I think Newt was kind and patient with Leta because he somehow understood that his love was unrequited because Leta was constitutionally hobbled in the ability to love. His love for her was selfless. It did not require reciprocation. It was a gift. I bet she might have even married him, and not his brother, but I think Newt is a man of the heart and while he could love her, he needed a life partner who could love him back. It might even be that he fixed her up with Theseus. THE BIG MOMENT when Leta said “I love you.” before going into the blue fire was not a mystery as to who she said it to, but a triumph of knowing the feeling of giving love due to a profoundly loving pair of brothers nurture. The next two are intertwined and highly speculative. Goldie deeply loved Jacob. Was it a potion or something else she cast on Jacob that manipulated him. Even though Jacob loves her, Goldie has demonstrated she has boundary issues in term of manipulating Jacob magically. We’ve had tons of speculation that Goldie is Snape’s grandmother. Could it be that Snapes mother was a bit ‘love hobbled’ as Goldie messed with Jacob and may have been magically forceful about starting a family? Snapes mother also would only have Goldie as a magical role model, as Jacob is not a wizard. She would have learned her magical morals from her. Maybe Snape was very ‘love hobbled’ by how his mother dealt with his muggle father, magically speaking. Lilly was SO IMPORTANT to Snape because love did not come easily to him as an adult. It was only the innocent love of childhood that he could experience. “Always” could have also been because it was “Only”.

That is similar in Avatar when Aang was asking Iroh to teach him Firebending. Iroh repay I am not sure if I am right teacher for you. Albus failed both Harry and Tom. The Love Charm is not just related to blood. We see this clearly at Battle of Hogwarts. We make our own family. The Love Charm would been strong with Sirius Black over Petunia Dulsey any day. James and Sirius where spiritual brothers which is far more powerful of Love Charm then blood sister sibling of Lily and Petunia. I find it funny that Tom and Harry are distant cousin that line up well with prophecy. The universe does have funny way of bring balance. The Dark Lord well mark him as his equal. I am not on board with well Harry Potter being destined to go after Voldemort(Or as you put it the universe keeping voldy in check via Harry). However even in the most realistic of situations of a boy like Tom who just remembers being in an orphanage(And that kind of life isn't really good for a child). Like take out the Magic world and the kid would probably still get in trouble and follow a similar path. Its not necessarily Dumbledore's responsibility to watch over him but....if he's doing bad things, technically there is some imperative to teach him right and wrong. This would also apply to the people at the orphanage. TLDR: Tragic past can lead to really bad futures if people around said child aren't diligent in making sure the boy/girl is raised right.

Well he's very fictional character so he could as well have been destined to take dark path because the author has freedom to do whatever he wants with fictional characters. In real life nobody's destined for dark path but Voldemort came out of Rowling's imagination not from reality, so she just made him incapable of love to save herself the trouble of making him somewhat pitiful.

it's not dumbledores job to take the role as a psychologist, but he certainly needed one

Your point is well taken. But I had a theory of my own: Tom came to Hogwarts s fully practicing dark wizard. Who trained him? Gellert Grindelwald operatives. Like Al Qaeda Gellert Grindelwald had use for orphans. Grindelwald was aware of orphan Muggle-borns in Muggle orphanages. He then sent operatives to approach and train these abandoned Magical kids. Tom Riddle was especially talented. When Tom was approached by Dumbledore he was trained to conceal his knowledge of his nature.

Tom first learned to conceal his nature after his meeting with Dumbledore.

you have to recall Tom was tormenting and torturing his fellow orphans before Dumbledore arrived. Coupled with the stealing and his words I think Dumbledore was right to avoid getting to close to a clearly dangerous and manipulative person

And that's why Slughorn hadn't died by Voldemort.. The only teacher that showed him some interest

Although he was likely to always grow up with that darkness given how his life was to that point, it's possible that given the right guidance from Dumbledore maybe, and encouraged to participate in activities with the shy kids so he felt he was helping others, his life could have been very different. Proper integration into the magical World, into Hogwarts, would have given him the structure his life needed. So he may have become a teacher later (defence against the dark arts so he could research darker magic and find ways to protect against it). But if he felt like the people at Hogwarts are his family, even just a few of them, would he have then stood with them against Grindelwald? We could have had a Grindelwald-Riddle duel with Dumbledore trying to defend both his ex boyfriend and his pupil from the worst of each other's spells! It's also possible if Riddle was being guided by Dumbledore and treated like a son then Grindelwald may take notice (he was jealous of Newt's relationship with Dumbledore) and might then decide to manipulate Riddle into joining him to protect himself and even (force?) Dumbledore to intercede (just to have Dumbledore's attention for a time?).

There is a fic about this called Rectifier in which Tom is the defense teacher and he and Albus are friends and Tom views him as a mentor.

I think that the real reason Tom left slughorn alive is bc maybe in a way unknowingly to him, but slughorn was a small father figure.

I don't know if Merope was capable or knowledgeable enough to do the imperious curse, she probably just had a snake bite him near the home using parseltongue, Tom Sr freaks out, she tells him it's poisonous but not to worry because she has the antidote (which was the love potion)

I think he couldn't change. Harry never tried to get back or hurt people that are mean and treat him badly. Tom was already in printed with if he could he would. So no redeemable traits at the point of Tom and Dumbledore first meeting.

Maybe Tom Riddle could've been saved, he could've been adopted by a good wizarding family and could've been raised to be a good person, but it didn't work that way for him, it's not really his fault that he turned out to be a powerful evil pratt, but that's how it worked out for him, Harry Potter was raised by his non magical family and they treated him like a slave and one that had a freaking debase and a total embarrassment, but they were the embarrassment, but Harry turned out to be a pretty decent kid, and grew up to be a decent young man and father,
