As a side note: ancient Athens did not have tv but but they had plenty of demagogues. So they used to say the phrase "democracy requires virtue and courage" (meaning it's pointless if the people dont support it). They also needed measures to force people to care about politics. The word idiot in greek literally means "he who cares only for his personal afairs" and it's negative connotation survives to this day.
@inventgineer2 жыл бұрын
I just looked this up elsewhere online to confirm (not being the kind of rube or dolt, or......idiot 😉 that does not do his duty properly to others, in this case in terms of independently verifying info before passing it along)....and man, lmao, THANK YOU internet friend. I had absolutely no idea that was its origin, but that fills my heart with a MASSIVE smile, because as someone of Italian-American ancestry? The only thing other than fire than runs through my veins is DUTY. So, most definitely (excuse my crudeness): f*ck all the idiots (aka savages aka barbarians) that are too dumb or weak to have the strength for anyone but themselves, lol. If one can't fathom a purpose and design larger than just one's self or one's family, then one isn't of much more worth than any other dumb farm animal. Complex life didn't arise because every cell just fought only for itself, and, indeed, what we refer to as "cancer"?.....is literally basically just a very broadstrokes term for "whenever a cluster of cells starts going retarded and fighting only for themselves, no matter the harm to the rest of the body". And that's what people who don't believe in democracy are: just uncivilized cancer, threatening the wellbeing of the whole just to suit their own passing interests.
@inventgineer2 жыл бұрын
Also, somewhat related: "retarded" comes from Italian and it literally just means "slow" -not even necessarily having to do with thinking, per say. So basically when everyone's SOOOOO upset and in arms about people using the words "retard" or "retarded"?.....All they're literally doing is teasing someone for being somewhat slower mentally than others. And, craaaazy fact about reality: some people DO think faster or slower than others, lol. Everyone's SO offended by the use of that particular word, but......kids still call each stupid in a million other ways (stupid, idiot, smoothbrain, moron, shortbus, etc), and curiously enough: you'll find no self-righteous outrage over all those 😆. This horrible trend of self-righteous moralizing in society is so extremely toxic -such a race to the bottom of who can be the most smug, self-important, and unyielding in their ideology.
@mbern45302 жыл бұрын
@@inventgineer The word is still used in things like fire retardant material and other uses. That has been happening for years, not just for laws, but also for news coverage. People at the left end of the political spectrum could loot, maim, murder, commit arson or make the president to retreat to a bunker, with no real consequences or outrage. Democrats could openly call to arms, deny elections and be as divisive as they wanted, and no one cared. Houses of Supreme Court justices with the "wrong" opinion could illegally be besieged with nobody shutting it down or locking those people up. (But hey, at least they stopped that one guy from murdering a justice, however there was no outrage over it) Oh right, and the president of the "good" party could be evidently corrupt (among other things), but suddenly that's okay... or has to be hidden away and the people gaslight over it. The current state of law and media coverage is already extremely partisan. Just because the other party did the same when it gets into power (although it has less media control), wouldn't mean it's the end of democracy.

Why they are supporting these concepts I still don't know. It doesn't and won't benefit them in the coming years. Instead, it's going to backfire on them badly. They seem afraid of change and people who don't look, act, think, dress or pray like them. Many of these people are middle age and older, not wordly, and appear really unhappy and downright miserable with their personal lives for reasons that have nothing to do with politics or other individuals. However, instead of realizing the cause of their unhappiness is due to themselves, it's easier for them to scapegoat minorities, women, lgbt, Democrats Biden. For example does Trump look happy to you? For all his money, degrees, children, attractive wives and mistresses, he seems like a miserable and unhappy person and it seems like he's been that way most of his life.

I was born in Afghanistan. My grandparents and many others in their generation, were farmers. They had lots of land that they farmed with primitive methods (more cows plowing than tractors and more donkeys irrigating than water-pumps)...it was pre-globalization and pre-war era, so farmers were not rich..had to labor and were extremely busy year around. A couple of decades of war and disruption of life later, the next generation didn't know how to farm, how to labor hard, how to be content. The one thing they got going for them was sky-rocketing real-estate prices (thanks to oodles of cash infusion by US) and inherited land from their poor farmer parents. So, they started selling these lands to the businesses and the wealthy..one piece at a time and lived lavishly. For some, it lasted 10 years. For others, 20. But it finally ran out. Prices crashed and they didn't have much to sell. What was worse though is that their kids, having been raised by bunch of dead-beat brats, are completely lost. Fearful, cowardly and completely at a loss towards life itself. Yeah, somewhat like America. So far removed from founding fathers and that it is impossible to reconnect the dots.

People are already suffering even with Dems in the majority-just look at where all the wealth is going! Then look at the major cities even those run by Dems-homelessness is EXPLODING. Does Maher have to worry about job security? Housing? Retirement? Doctor bills? Who really knows if these elections are accurate? How could any one person possibly know for sure, unless that one person personally talked to every voter to confirm what their vote was? An impossible task. I think it's legitimately suspicious that a computerized, SECURE website isn't used to tally the votes. Banks have been using secure websites for years now. If these websites weren't secure, the world's greatest hackers would have successfully hacked in, and electronically stolen everyone's money by now. That same system the banks use to keep track of customer transactions could also be used to keep track of every voter's vote. You could vote from home over the internet the same way you make transactions at your bank. Anyone too poor to have internet service could go to their local library to vote on their computers. After voting, the system would send you an e-mail to confirm your votes. Just the way banks do now when you make a transaction. You would also get more voter participation from that kind of system, since that makes voting easier. The fact that those who control the system, HAVEN'T switched to that kind of system, tells me that CORRUPT people are benefiting from the current antiquated system. So they keep that BETTER SYSTEM from happening.

Not enough for us to keep Congress. That will have real, genuine ramifications. No more Democrat bills will pass until at least the next Presidential election, and if the Republicans win the White House? Then it could be said no Democrat bills will pass for the foreseeable future. By "Democrat bills" I mean those bills which do not have any Republican support, and if you have been paying attention, that would be 99% of all bills put forward by Democrats. Basically, I think Bill is afraid that Democrats are simply unwilling or unprepared to defend against the kind of hardball tactics Republicans are fully willing to employ in their desire for victory. Republicans will commit illegal and immoral acts to achieve victory, things Democrats will not rightly mimic. So, in some ways, the battle for Democrats has already been lost---because we are unwilling to break the Rule of Law, in order to save the Rule of Law. Republicans have shown they have no respect for such ideals and would simply prefer they be the only party in power. Alas, far too many voters look no farther than their local news, spoon feeding them... Why think for one's self? And so? They blame their present President instead of exercising their brain power to research the truth. The largest domino of democracy might get pushed over Tuesday. Gawd help us all then!

Bingo! If a majority of Americans voting for Biden in 2020 was an expression OF democracy, why wouldn't a majority of Americans flipping the House of Representatives to the Republican party not be an equal expression OF democracy? How does it equate to the end of democracy? Trump's election denial only got traction with less than half of the American people. And that number is NOT growing. It got no traction with the MSM or the judiciary. What the hell is everyone panicking about? Trump will loose again. He'll make the same noise as he did before. And it will have the same lack of effect. Only this time you will have a Democratic President with a Republican Congress -- assuming Repubs hold the Senate, which is hardly assured. That doesn't feel like the end of democracy to me. It feels like a preservation of it.

Bill Mayer's epilogue is that inner sense when at the high school senior prom you realised as the last slow dance was being sung that a very special time was coming to an end. It was not going to be graduation when it was officially over. The feeling of the beginning of the end was weeks before at that prom. That's what it has felt like since 2015.

The bottom line is lack of education and media literacy. Knowing how to process facts and understanding context are able to keep greed and power in check. Once there's not enough intelligent vigilance to counter blatant hunger for power, those checks are smashed. And it's happened already.

But it's the greedy and powerful elites and corporations are the problem. I don't see people on either side being the problem other than they keep drinking the Kool aid. We are constantly exposed to influence and lies from media. The only thing is citizens have to do is turn it off and start showing each other a little respect. We have so much power united and almost nothing divided and that's the key to their power and ours.
