Yeah, but the sexual preferences of men wasn't what his monologue was about. For real though, men need to learn that it is OK to not want to have sex, even if it is available, they can say no. It took me a while to learn that, I used to think that as a man I always had to be down to go, whenever. When I was in highschool this girl I knew but wasn't particularly attracted to grabbed my head and pulled it into her chest. I was either studying or putting together notes for some project or another--I don't really remember--but I was pretty lost in what I was doing and then suddenly I was motorboating a girl I wasn't into. I don't think she meant much by it other than a quick "hey this'll wake him up" or something like that. I must not have looked very amused because a friend asked me if something was wrong and she looked kind of hurt by the fact that my immediate response was more confusion and perhaps some mild irritation rather than "Wee! I can give 3 personal experiences all in the workplace but only one of them is harassment. A guy I barely knew said in a crowded break room, "we should get a beer sometime." I couldn't tell if he was asking me on a date or inviting me to a bar everyone went to after work. I said maybe. Another co-worker said he was asking me on a date. The next time he asked I told him I have a boyfriend. It was awkward to work together but he ignored me afterwards. I flirted constantly with my now husband. There was a guy that I had guessed liked me. I wasn't interested and was cordial only. I had a bad day and was insecure about my job. He put his hand on my knee twice while I described the bad day to him and another co-worker. I felt even more awkward about having to be obvious the second time I had to get his hand off. Now who out there can't figure out which situation was harassment?

@@grog3514 Happy for you, but you have to know your situation is a rarity. And a lot depends on how long you've been married because it's not the least bit true that people don't change over time. Some people change a lot and become different people. You or your spouse may change over time and the other one might not like what the other one has become. So just be aware. Or you may say something with good intentions that gets taken the wrong way and is forever held against you, even if you explain your intentions. It could cause a divide that can never be repaired. But there's a reason marriage jokes work. It's because there's a grain of truth to them. The one about 50% of marriages end in divorce and the other 50% choose to remain unhappy is pretty much spot on.

This point was brilliant -- "it is what women want, but only from the men they want it from. Problem is we don't know which ones we are". I feel like this is at the crux of the problem with men and women. If a woman likes you, creepy is cute and vice versa if she doesn't. So you should figure out how she feels before you do anything. But that's tricky sometimes/for some people. And popular culture certainly perpetuates the idea that persistence, overly forward behavior, and trying hard is what women want. 90% of guys who try really hard and fall in the category of what women describe as "too intense" actually think women will appreciate their intensity as effort, devotion, sweetness, caring, etc. Because what's what happens in the movies. And is further confirmed by women going "awwww" when they watch those movies. In reality, if you act this way and they are not into you, best case scenario is they block your number. So popular culture is definitely to blame. And women are a little bit to blame too for having a double standard.

I was on board with MeToo when it was about rape and sexual assault. Once they started expanding the remit to the purposely-vague catch-all term "misconduct", constantly moving the goalposts, and when they started talking about policing people's behavior to the point that only Victorian-era interactions were acceptable, they lost me. Josh Dolphin consent on the surface are not consent. If you are in power, you can push some one over their limits. Honestly, I think a policy that you can only ask out a co-worker once (assuming they said no) is actually a pretty solid message to send. The purpose is to prevent unwanted attention from co-workers, not to stop relationships from happening. Clearly, if both people realize their feelings have changed, they will make a go of it. If it turns out the new feelings aren't mutual, the easiest thing is to say, "I totally understand, and I'm sorry if this made you uncomfortable."

This. This, so much. I've worked in a bookstore for years. As part of that job, I've had to keep track of the books, including romance novels, so that I could make recommendations to customers. Most of them are fantasies about everything that's forbidden in the public eye, up to and including rape. I won't pretend to know statistics on this, but in my experience, there's a lot of women who like being dominated, who are turned on by a strong, firm grip on their wrist or even neck, who want to be called dirty whores during sex etc. I know it precisely because I'm not into that. I've always been taught to be nice to women, to not overstep the boundaries etc., and then I had a woman be dissapointed in me for not being rape-y enough during sex. Go figure.

Most of my female friends are now married to men with whom they had great chemistry right off the bat and after a few dates the chemistry only deepened. There were no catfights or some dranatic pursuing involved, but that would probably not make an interesting movie in Hollywood which is why we always get shown that atrocious 'I hate you then I love you' plot.

I'm a woman & I have never understood this. Of course, I'm lesbian, but even so, I see this pattern in women. I am slow & tentative in expressing interest or getting to know someone so someone more aggressive always gets the girl. And what is it about women liking "bad boys" or "bad girls"?! I'm basically a good girl who likes good girls, so I haven't even had a date in 20 years & I'm getting old. There is someone wrong in American society that is causing all this anger. Men & women certainly don't seem to understand each other. BTW, not all men are attracted to submissive females. That rule about asking out coworkers is insane. My brother told me he got turned down by a coworker a few months ago, and then told me about that rule and I honestly thought he was fucking with me since he's always been a comedian. When I was a pre-teen and started showing interests in girls, I got turned down a lot and it made me depressed. In an effort to give me confidence, my mom used to tell me that my Dad had to chase her for months before she agreed to go on a date with him (they were coworkers). Reading down the comments and am amazed at how many people thought this bit was about movies. It's really really not. The movies are just a way to make a point about how we need to find a sane balance in the era of #MeToo. What he's saying is that not every unwanted advance is intended maliciously. People are complicated, and dating is even moreso. We need to take harassment and assault very very seriously, and it's good that that finally seems to be happening, but we may already be at the point where we are failing to draw a reasonable distinction between the appropriate and inappropriate, and that is almost as bad as ignoring the problem altogether. Hopefully, #MeToo's greatest accomplishment will be inciting a genuine national dialogue that results in a redefinition of the norms that protects actual victims while recognizing that not everybody is one.

Bill Maher hits right at the heart of the matter. Us boys are taught by movies and pop culture by the time we're knee-high that if we try and try and try and do all sorts of crazy things, the girl we like will finally yield and finally fall in love with us. Then you realize it doesn't work. And then, on other occasions, you realize it does work ! It entirely depends on the situation and the girl we're going after. But still, you can't fault a guy for just trying. The average guy rarely ever gets a girl through "love at first sight", simply because we're not such a pretty sight. So we have to rely on something other than love at first sight, which is courtship and in which we are taught to always be the pro-active one and therefore get a little pushy. If you give up immediately, as an average dude, you might as well give up on love and sex forever. You have to make your presence and interest known. And sometimes, you might also have to try a few times before knowing it's gonna work. It's the guys who go beyond that point that are the actual harassers. Most guys accept rejection. Actually, we're pretty damn boss at it.
