Yeah, but the sexual preferences of men wasn't what his monologue was about. For real though, men need to learn that it is OK to not want to have sex, even if it is available, they can say no. It took me a while to learn that, I used to think that as a man I always had to be down to go, whenever. Now I know I can put on the brakes and not enter a situation I don't feel like being a part of.

The thing is i agree that guys need to stop being childish and when they are rejected. But girls can be blamed because as bill said, we have no idea if they reject us because they dont like us or if they want us to try harder. Women expect men to be a mind reader and if we cant read their minds, they would call us insensitive or something. Basically, both genders must learn to compromise where guys need to grow up if rejected and girls need to learn to just say what they want and dont expect guys to be professor x or somethin. When I was in highschool this girl I knew but wasn't particularly attracted to grabbed my head and pulled it into her chest. I was either studying or putting together notes for some project or another--I don't really remember--but I was pretty lost in what I was doing and then suddenly I was motorboating a girl I wasn't into. I don't think she meant much by it other than a quick "hey this'll wake him up" or something like that. I must not have looked very amused because a friend asked me if something was wrong and she looked kind of hurt by the fact that my immediate response was more confusion and perhaps some mild irritation rather than "Wee! Boobies!" I spent the rest of the day feeling bad about the way I'd made her feel by not being into it. It's only in remembering it now that it occurs to me how absolutely fucked up that is.

Consent either verbal or cued is the part Bill and others don't get. Bill should understand the difference between feeling sexy and feeling objectified. I can give 3 personal experiences all in the workplace but only one of them is harassment. A guy I barely knew said in a crowded break room, "we should get a beer sometime." I couldn't tell if he was asking me on a date or inviting me to a bar everyone went to after work. I said maybe. Another co-worker said he was asking me on a date. The next time he asked I told him I have a boyfriend. It was awkward to work together but he ignored me afterwards. I flirted constantly with my now husband. There was a guy that I had guessed liked me. I wasn't interested and was cordial only. I had a bad day and was insecure about my job. He put his hand on my knee twice while I described the bad day to him and another co-worker. I felt even more awkward about having to be obvious the second time I had to get his hand off. Now who out there can't figure out which situation was harassment?

This point was brilliant -- "it is what women want, but only from the men they want it from. Problem is we don't know which ones we are". I feel like this is at the crux of the problem with men and women. If a woman likes you, creepy is cute and vice versa if she doesn't. So you should figure out how she feels before you do anything. But that's tricky sometimes/for some people. And popular culture certainly perpetuates the idea that persistence, overly forward behavior, and trying hard is what women want. 90% of guys who try really hard and fall in the category of what women describe as "too intense" actually think women will appreciate their intensity as effort, devotion, sweetness, caring, etc. Because what's what happens in the movies. And is further confirmed by women going "awwww" when they watch those movies. In reality, if you act this way and they are not into you, best case scenario is they block your number. So popular culture is definitely to blame. And women are a little bit to blame too for having a double standard.

tbh isn't this a much more universal things, not only being applicable to men but also other situations? e.g. if a long-time friends asks me to meet up and do something, but upon me being hesitation, becomes a bit more pushy about it, I would absolutely perceive this differently from a co-worker that I hardly know doing the very same thing. because obviously the way we perceive behavior is dependent on our relationship to the involved person(s).

Once they started expanding the remit to the purposely-vague catch-all term "misconduct", constantly moving the goalposts, and when they started talking about policing people's behavior to the point that only Victorian-era interactions were acceptable, they lost me. Now it's just a lot of screeching. The voices that actually make sense (usually the 40 and over women writers) are being drowned out by the 20-something neo-"feminists" that cling to double standards, shout on Twitter, and can't make intelligent arguments if their lives depended on it. If the clearer heads wrest control of MeToo away from the idiots, I'll pay attention again. The purpose is to prevent unwanted attention from co-workers, not to stop relationships from happening. Clearly, if both people realize their feelings have changed, they will make a go of it. If it turns out the new feelings aren't mutual, the easiest thing is to say, "I totally understand, and I'm sorry if this made you uncomfortable."

A lot of those creepy neckbeards claim they put women on pedestal also, but they tend to have bizarre Madonna/Whore complexes. Girls who go for men who are cruel to them tend to be a certain kind of woman and have issues of their own. It doesn't represent women as a whole.
@Chris-nu5bk6 жыл бұрын
+Letty Lunasical wrong. all species have primal instincts designed for our specific sex. Males are atracted to submissive females who tend to younger and femaled are atracted to males who are agresive, dominant and are very malicious.

I'm a woman & I have never understood this. Of course, I'm lesbian, but even so, I see this pattern in women. I am slow & tentative in expressing interest or getting to know someone so someone more aggressive always gets the girl. And what is it about women liking "bad boys" or "bad girls"?! I'm basically a good girl who likes good girls, so I haven't even had a date in 20 years & I'm getting old. Sometimes I feel frustrated, but mostly I've given up & don't even try or expect to meet potential partners anymore. I just don't understand. I'm NOT boring! I'm curious, I have a lot of interests, love to learn, am a good storyteller, have had all kinds of adventures, & I make people laugh. People of both sexes & all ages enjoy my company, think I'm fascinating & funny, but no woman ever seems romantically interested.
@DonnaBrooks5 жыл бұрын
BTW, it sucks to be placed on a pedestal, b/c you INVARIABLY fall off & then the person is disappointed and sometimes just breaks up b/c they were never really interested in YOU, they were interested in their IMAGE of you. I wouldn't date either of the extremes you mention. There's a way to respect, support, & admire someone w/o turning them into an object of worship or some kind of trophy.
@DonnaBrooks5 жыл бұрын
@@Chris-nu5bk My father was a good man. He was not aggressive and not malicious at all. My parents were married for 40 years when my mom died. I know there are good relationships out there. There is someone wrong in American society that is causing all this anger. Men & women certainly don't seem to understand each other. BTW, not all men are attracted to submissive females. Lots of men like strong women. You make it sound like we are all still living in caves. Throughout the animal kingdom there are a multitude of different dynamics in mating & reproductive behavior. Today, I think women are more attracted to men who are good providers, b/c they'd make good fathers, and it has little to do with being dominant or aggressive. The idea that women are attracted to men who are "very malicious" is ludicrous, even from an evolutionary standpoint. Malicious men aren't good husbands & fathers.

This. This, so much. I've worked in a bookstore for years. As part of that job, I've had to keep track of the books, including romance novels, so that I could make recommendations to customers. Most of them are fantasies about everything that's forbidden in the public eye, up to and including rape. I won't pretend to know statistics on this, but in my experience, there's a lot of women who like being dominated, who are turned on by a strong, firm grip on their wrist or even neck, who want to be called dirty whores during sex etc. I know it precisely because I'm not into that. I've always been taught to be nice to women, to not overstep the boundaries etc., and then I had a woman be dissapointed in me for not being rape-y enough during sex. Go figure.

The point here is this: *people, not just women, accept all kinds of behaviour if they find someone hot* That is just the way it is. Is it hypocrisy? I don't know... So folks, you don't get to call "sexual harassment" just becasue someone asks you out/tried to court/pursued you when you don't like him BUT AT THE SAME TIME guys shouldn't cry "feminazi!" when you're rejected! OBVIOUSLY, I'm not saying sexual harassment is just when a person doesn't find th eother person attarctive, but I'm talking in the context of New Rules... We all need to GROW THE HELL UP AND ACCEPT CERTAIN PAINFUL TRUTHS ABOUT WHAT PEOPE LIKE, WHAT PEOPLE DON'T LIKE, HOW YOU SHOULD BEHAVE AND COPING WITH REJECTION. It is hard, but that is life....
@HexIsme6 жыл бұрын
DITTO. I'm honestly kind of shocked at the amount of people here who seem to think that only women accept otherwise creepy behavior if it's done by someone they think is hot--which of course, even then, #NotAllWomen. I've seen guys literally fuck up their lives over a hot chick. Not because they knew her at all or could name a skill or hobby that he shares with her or a personality trait that he likes about her, but because sHe ThIcC. I see a lot of "Women are attracted to power/money" comments, too. Like men aren't...? It's also kind of amazing how many people here seem to think they know all about the other sex when what they have to say generally disproves that attitude. Guys are multi-dimensional humans. Women are multi-dimensional humans. To claim to know anything about what's going through their heads based on limited if not zero experience or solid data is just... silly. We set our own boundaries, our own limits, and we as individuals decide whether or not to tolerate X behavior out of X person.
@satyasyasatyasya57466 жыл бұрын
I'm reminded of when 50shades movies came out at first (or when any romcom etc. comes out). I was like *"keep everything the same, EVERYTHING, but make 1 change...make the guy ugly as hell. Now tell me it is in any way, a sexy story or a legit seduction or whatever you want to call it." It would be the worst thing ever, or super unrealistic or boring...or rapey or whateve the hell is truly wrong with it.* It is not that men or women want x.y.z - there are no general rules- we are all different, but what we do want, is the attention of someone we find hot. What that is, is again, individual. Madness I tell you! haha

Well, I mean, you kind of get that in Deadpool. It's still kind of messed up that the female lead clearly doesn't give a shit how he looks when so many other ladies would bail...and I say that as a lady. It's like, there's this weird expectancy for women to accept guys however they may look, but women have to be hot to be loved/accepted. EDIT: Can you imagine how the movie might've gone if she'd been the disfigured one? On the flip side, there are women out there who are like that--who would totally be down with that guy, regardless of how he looks. It's the same with men, even if the ratio is questionable, in either sense.
@mendingwall38236 жыл бұрын
That is not what the movement is about. Its about boundaries ams u understanding that no means no. Asking a woman out isnt rape. But if she says no, move on. And perhaps you should consider power dynamics when asking a subordinate. What was wrong with google saying dont ask a person out again if they say no?

Brilliantly said, real human relationships are complicated and messy. There inst only love involved, there is power, influence, money, friends, connections, families, orthodoxies, traditions, cultural and racial barriers and of course religions playing a role and sometimes there are no villains in bad stories and horrible dates. And it would be easier to see the real bad apples, predators, psychos and maniacs if we didn't react only on first sight :)

Reading down the comments and am amazed at how many people thought this bit was about movies. It's really really not. The movies are just a way to make a point about how we need to find a sane balance in the era of #MeToo. What he's saying is that not every unwanted advance is intended maliciously. People are complicated, and dating is even moreso. We need to take harassment and assault very very seriously, and it's good that that finally seems to be happening, but we may already be at the point where we are failing to draw a reasonable distinction between the appropriate and inappropriate, and that is almost as bad as ignoring the problem altogether. Hopefully, #MeToo's greatest accomplishment will be inciting a genuine national dialogue that results in a redefinition of the norms that protects actual victims while recognizing that not everybody is one.

That rule about asking out coworkers is insane. My brother told me he got turned down by a coworker a few months ago, and then told me about that rule and I honestly thought he was fucking with me since he's always been a comedian. When I was a pre-teen and started showing interests in girls, I got turned down a lot and it made me depressed. In an effort to give me confidence, my mom used to tell me that my Dad had to chase her for months before she agreed to go on a date with him (they were coworkers). To think, I wouldn't exist and you wouldn't be reading this right now, had those laws existed back then. In fact, I'd bet some of you wouldn't exist to read this either. Heck a lot less of us would be here..... ....... ....... ....... .......come to think of it, maybe that would be a good thing, lol.

3:00 That 'ok for him, but not for you' thing is real... women dressing up, tits out, barely legal miniskirt, and pumps to the sky... heading tot he club and calling one guy a pervert for smiling at her, because he's old, or an ugmo, while a young, hot guy slides his arm around her waist without even asking, and she batts her lashes at him. There's a difference between inappropriate behavior deserving of disdain, and someone you just don't want that attention from not psychically knowing that they aren't allowed, but the guy beside them is.
@xxxaragon4 жыл бұрын
but again, this applies to everyone, doesn't it? like, I'm pretty sure that a lot of heterosexual men that "dress up" would be irritated or even (with more uptight ones) downright appalled if another man looked at them in a "flirty" way.

Bill Maher hits right at the heart of the matter. Us boys are taught by movies and pop culture by the time we're knee-high that if we try and try and try and do all sorts of crazy things, the girl we like will finally yield and finally fall in love with us. Then you realize it doesn't work. And then, on other occasions, you realize it does work ! It entirely depends on the situation and the girl we're going after. But still, you can't fault a guy for just trying. The average guy rarely ever gets a girl through "love at first sight", simply because we're not such a pretty sight. So we have to rely on something other than love at first sight, which is courtship and in which we are taught to always be the pro-active one and therefore get a little pushy. If you give up immediately, as an average dude, you might as well give up on love and sex forever. You have to make your presence and interest known. And sometimes, you might also have to try a few times before knowing it's gonna work. It's the guys who go beyond that point that are the actual harassers. Most guys accept rejection. Actually, we're pretty damn boss at it.
