Even we in Kenya have a law against child marriage. And we're in Kenya!! Only 50% of us have electricity
@amandabell63566 жыл бұрын
We like things like electricity in America because a company can make lots of money selling it. Our rich people in charge don't want everyone smart enough to realize how they are being scammed by them, so they underfund and belittle education. Our founding fathers wanted free public education for everyone. They'd be ashamed to know the effects of what our leaders have done the last fifty years has made it so that 15% of Americans are now functionally illiterate. 32 million adults can't read. There are some states whose schools are criminally underfunded and around 35% of the adults are reading at the level of nine-year-olds.

I teach as a resident substitute in Southern California. I can attest to all of this. Especially teaching in a high risk, low income district. Literally, the first 10-15 minutes of the day is finding out which of my students ATE THAT DAY. It's amazing how much better a kid's attitude gets when they aren't hungry. Low income breakfast is nice, but I've seen it first hand...a breakfast stick and a thimble of milk isn't going to have a modern child full in a classroom. Thankfully, I make more than the teacher in Arizona...but not all that much. And this lack of priority in who we have teaching our kids is PRECISELY why so many bad ones are allowed to become teachers in the first place. I mean, you have to have a clean record, but many of the teachers you see on the news for some misdeed had one before they got in the classroom. I do what I do because in my own gruff, former Marine way, I give a shit about the young people in my community. And it's the direct way I can have influence...even if just for a single day. I wish he people who prioritized our public schools thought the same way. But I've seen Betsy DeVos speak...and I can't see that happening for a LONG, LONG time.

Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot I was in LA a few years back for an educational conference. At first I marvelled at their salaries compared to mine in SC... and then we got on the subject of housing costs. The high housing and transportation costs in California seem to more than wipe out any pay advantage. The price of homes in even poor areas is crazy and the rent is also prohibitive. My hat's off to you. If you want to help kids just as poor but do a little better with housing we need good teachers in SC too. The pay and benefits still suck but there is a good side too. I understand though when you feel committed to a community. Mine has over a 90% poverty index. These are mostly rural kids but they now live like poor urban kids. I came here 20 years ago from corporate work with the promise to myself that I would stay until I wasn't helping anymore or just couldn't hack it anymore... only then might I consider moving to a more affluent and better funded district. I haven't caved yet... but I do think about it more than I used to do so.

I’m a teacher in Western Australia and the average teacher here gets paid around $100 000 (Australian) a year. We are fairly well paid because we have a huge and very well paid mining industry and high salaries are needed to attract new teachers (and retain current teachers). Finland has the best education system in the world. The teachers there are paid as much as doctors and lawyers , and admission requirements to study teaching at university are as tough as medical school. The old saying is true.....’if you pay peanuts you get monkeys’.
@sirmeowthelibrarycat6 жыл бұрын
SuperEdge67 😳 Yes, indeed! In Finland the children are not ‘taught’ but educated! They are treated with respect and encouraged to express themselves both academically and practically. They organise their day under careful mentoring by the most highly educated teachers in the world, who have to possess a Masters degree. Education in Finland is ‘bottom up’ drawing the best from the children as they grow up and not ‘top down’ imposed upon them by political ideology. Sadly, here in 🇬🇧 it is the opposite, with inevitable consequences for so many of our young people. Just reflect upon the extent of mental illness being presented by children here and the woeful attempts to manage it by over stretched medical staff. As a retired teacher, I could burst into tears at the treatment of children by those who should know better.

I grew up (and went to school) in Germany, and thankfully our teachers there were paid way more than in the US. In fact, I did not know one teacher that did not own a nice house - and that is in a country where most people rent, and home ownership is a lot more expensive than the US.

You get a certain amount of basic materials. Parents are usually notified that students should have a backpack, pencils, erasers, crayons in the lower grades, etc. But if you teach in a district where kids can't even EAT at night because there isn't enough money, the idea that they're going to have all the supplies is unrealistic. So are you going to have them do without? Depend on other students to consistently have something for them to mitigate the distraction? Or come out of pocket to make sure the base is covered? School supplies, snacks...I even bought a couple of pairs of gloves for students last winter. It happens.

@veek.64636 жыл бұрын
Not always. I am very educated and very religious and very progressive. I have travelled the world studying religion. I love it. I understand it. It's not something "out there" to me. It's identifying my true nature within and living from there. It helps that am autonomously taught in part and that I actually contemplate deeply the concepts and put them to the test. I question everything. And when deeply pondered and investigated, much of it rings true. Good Religous understanding requires good education and critical thinking skills. Otherwise it's fake religion.
@Eliphas_Leary6 жыл бұрын
Vee K., there's a difference between understanding religions (and as a result being able to offer translation between the different religious perspectives) and being stuck in a religious mindset. People like you are important, but unfortunately also the exception.
@veek.64636 жыл бұрын
Thanks Eliphas. I hope someone will read this. What ai have come to learn is so simple- in all religions there is a very black or white choice to make. The one side is love and setting selfishness aside long enough to see how we all are virtually identical in wanting to be happy and not suffer, and then acting out of compassion for others. The other side is aversion or hatred or jealousy and greed- those afflictive states that make one really cling to self interest and not care for others who don't fit the exact mold we want. The result of either of these mindsets is often not clear in this life though one who practices compassion certainly has a deep joy from benefitting others even when their personal life is tough. I think what is really going on here is that we are in degenerate times. I think fundamental values are excellent- and they are the same values across religions and across worldly societies as well: don't kill or harm or steal or make sad others. Help others, rejoice in their happiness, be a good person to know and offer to assist others however possible. i got into this early in life as someone who had very vivid dreams and visions and later in life went through the death process twice naturally due to my body circumstances and also had two seizure like experiences where I went beyond my body as well. I have seen heaven with my own eyes and experienced being there. My feeling is it is a reflection of the mindset of compassion. That after this life our awareness sets up shop in a reality we are most accustomed to. Therefore, I believe there is no protection for one's self as great as compassion for others, and no injury to one's self worse than hatred of others. My feeling is hatred stems from jealousy which leads to resentment and then full blown anger/hatred. My fear is many teachers in this world of religion are not enlightened at all and are misleading their students and parishioners. Am really not trying to be judgements but they seem to have some bad feelings toward me when I tell them what I know. They seem to get angry. They themselves are often misguided by other teachers. I have met and sat and loved win many amazing people like Mother Theresa, yogis and lamas and women teachers in other countries, Mystics, people living in caves and ice caves and in remote places and people like you and me who live in society have profound wisdom as well. I can tell you I have met with the Pope and the Dalai Lama on some occasional and I have found both of them to be exceptions to many teachers- they are both truly loving beings. Both very good hearted and happy to share what they don't know as much as what they do- and yet they don't get power crazy. But in general, I think most evangelical Christians are actually totally going against Christ teachings. They look too far "out there" and focus on the little insignificant shit, don't do the real work of religion, are prejudice against others not just like them, and make a big deal out stupid crap. Christ himself was very progressive mentally. He clearly said the only way to heaven is through him and then identified himself as a vessel of pure love. Therefore the only way to happiness is love. Also, more people should realize cause and effect is physics. Karma is science. sonmy biggest warning to others after going through the death process twice and coming back is : what you wish for others becomes your fate. So wish them happiness. It ultimately all comes back on us. Thanks for reading and understanding and saying something nice. I wish you profound happiness, love, great health, wealth, and everything your heart desires. I have faith we have a solution to this degeneration. I think we have a whole new species coming up in the world. I am calling ten homo universalist. I think it won't be long now before Homo sapiens goes the way of the dodo and that is why right now the afflictive aspects of Homo sapiens is on such display. A candle burns brightest right before it runs out of fuel. Now ai look like a crazy person writing so much. I hope someone reads it if it helps. It's comforting to know we understand what is going on. Personally, I think Trump is the incarnation of the Devil. I truly do. I think it's that serious. And I think Good will win.

Wow, those are shocking and disgusting wages for your teachers. In Canada, you can earn more than that teacher's posted salary, working at a Walmart, which is a minimum wage starting pay. And btw, the people who do work at these minimum wage jobs in Canada, along with the rest of us, are fighting for them to have higher wages than they already do. Be strong and stand united teachers of America. You deserve much higher wages, benefits and respect.

Thank you for this rule Bill! Before my husband passed away I was able to make it because of his income. Now as the sole income provider I'm struggling and still trying to provide supplies but not as much as I did before. Looks like SC MIGHT be giving us a 2% raise ... except it's not because our benefit cost increases will wipe it out. Politicians keep trying to impose ridiculous measures of teacher "accountability" and having us jump through hoops and kids taking faulty assessments so they can say they did something. Actually it has all only harmed educational quality. For the first time in my career I hesitate to encourage any of my students to enter the field of education.

These Teachers' Strikes are evidence that we desperately need unions. Unions generally might have a few negative side effects, but they are a huge net positive on society. I would rather have my tax dollars (and even pay extra in tax) go towards taking care of people who can't afford rent despite working 2 jobs, than have it go towards Wealthy Wall Street jerks or Tech Companies like Amazon getting away with tax-payer funded government handouts. This is pathetic for even a 3rd World country, let alone the "Richest country in the history of the World". Especially considering that these teachers need a teeny-tiny fraction of the money that went towards Wall Street bailout from the Obama Administration. And shame on both Republicans and Democrats for not raising more awareness about this... While Republicans stab you from the front, Democrats like Diane Fienstein and Joe Manchin stab you from the back. We need more Elizabeth Warrens, Bernies Sanders, and Ro Khannas.

@223Drone6 жыл бұрын
@Michael Anderson Again your still not paying attention. The on strike have to take multiple jobs because they underpaid and are unable to sustain themselves. Add to that they have to supply all the schools equipment with their own money when they should clearly be supplied by the state. Also don't try to shift criticism onto Obama when the state leadership are the ones who refuse to give them a decent wage.
@223Drone6 жыл бұрын
@Michael Anderson Except you have no evidence to support such a claim. The fact that teachers have to strike in order to get a decent wage in in states Oklahoma disproves that notion.

50 plus years of corruption; demonizing unions and getting rid of them; gerrymandering, pitting everyone against the so-called other; chipping away at everything that made America great and the land of opportunity. Those immigrants Americans are so worried about taking their jobs is becoming and will be the new reality, not because they are working illegally or for less money but because they are the only ones qualified for jobs. Property taxes on homeowners while business gets abatements cannot continue to fund schools, most of which goes to administrators who have very little contact with students(same as CEOs lack of interaction with employees). Another funding method must be found. KY gave their 1% a tax cut though so I am sure that helped to give teachers pay raise. NOT. I don't want my child to go through metal detectors to go to class with their clear backpacks. And I don't want teachers armed for war to read Dr. Suess. Other civilized countries don't have this problem. But of course they are better educated and have healthcare that covers mental illness than good ole USA, #1 my ass.

Back in the day, it was hard to be a woman who was bartered for marriage. Dowries, replacing women who died in childbirth, left no time or inclination for education. As birth rates fell and fewer women died and started outliving the husbands, we started seeing the creeps who felt entitled to a young wife. Because there was more where they came from. This country tried polygamy, and I believe those men who cheat would jump at the chance in a minute. How many young girls are flattered by the attention of an older man? How many young girls get "sold" by their parents? Ask Ivanka.
