The far left and far right have wayyyy more in common than you’d think. They both create issues out of thin air and try to fix what ain’t broken (defund the police / build a border wall). Most Americans are right down the middle, just tryin to work hard and feed their families. That’s the point of this piece on Matt Damon. The left is continuously focusing on stupid celebrity issues and police shootings (which total 1000 per year) instead of issues that affect all Americans (Inadequate access to healthcare, food scarcity, clean water, safe good paying jobs, reasonably priced housing). It was a straightforward answer that made complete sense without blaming a pandemic.
@proof.17films Жыл бұрын
Damon is wrong on that count. Films from original screenplays are being released in theaters and on streaming every year; that's fact, not opinion. Great films, whether original or adapted, are released every year by Hollywood yet many of them aren't being seen enough due to the minority of mass appeal blockbusters like the Marvel films. Original films deserve support and to not be stigmatized by labels like "Oscar bait", but cinema has always flourished and up to the present. Hollywood isn't dead.

@@proof.17films For the record, OP did a shitty job saying what Damon was actually talking about. The question was more about why passion projects/slower dialogue heavy movies have taken a backseat to the gaudy, extravagant $100M+ movies, not that they don't exist. His answer is exactly what OP said, and he specifically brings up Behind the Candelabra, which is a very niche audience and was still a $25M budget, but is only ever going to make like $5M maximum on box office, and so DVD was necessary for movies like that one in particular or something like Shawshank Redemption which flopped in theaters but is now considered top 10 all time. It's not that good movies don't exist, it's that the majority of movies are very much copy-paste plotline cliches and stick the "hottest" name you can in the starring role, and you make profit regardless if the movie is good or not. But, I hate ppl saying there are no good movies out there when Parasite, Us, Midsommar, the Menu, Top Gun Mav,...etc came out in the last 3-5 years. So basically Liam's Law is: "DON'T tell your redemption arc story. We're not interested." Why do I get the feeling those who say that would, if you did keep quiet, then if/when they found out of your past misdeeds, condemn you harshly for having kept it hidden?

Of course "merit first" isn't racist by itself. However, "We had to hire 99.9 percent white people, because merit first" is! So while the argument of "merit first" certainly can be made in good faith, very often that is just not the case.

We’ll all do a lot better in this country the minute we realize that it’s much easier, cheaper, an more profitable for these shit journalists to write quick outrage articles based on some celebrity’s imperfect tweet, which will garnish millions of clicks and shares btw; than it is to do months of actual research into something worthwhile for society but will barely get any notice. Market solutions are great for somethings but terrible for providing us with the news we need.

By extension. Who would have thought that a "Market Solution' (drama for the sake of clicks) would contribute to a political divide. Then again CNN and Fox are entertainment first news second. . How long until we get tired of the news drama and turn away. What will be the next attraction to clicks?

I have a suggestion. Turn it off. The news. Social media. All of it. If we stop engaging with this crap, the advertisers will notice and abandon ship. If we can't shut it off because we're hopelessly addicted to the false power of outrage and manufactured drama, then we're part of the problem.

I mean I agree that it sucks that so many people turn to these totally sensationalist news channels as their only source of news, however 1. There are definitely some more reliable news sources that you can turn to for less sensationalist information, especially if you read multiple opposing publications(that part is really key to get a varied and complete perspective. 2. Unfortunately the alternative to market based news source is far far worse. Government controlled news has been extremely dangerous everywhere it appears and I can't imagine it ever really existing in a free society
