My uncle was a car mechanic (back in the day) He could easily take apart the malfunctioning part, repair it or replace it, re-install it and it was good to go. That's because the parts were separate and they were not all "integrated." Nowadays; one part malfunctions and it literally takes other mechanical systems with it. It is no longer car repair, it is now computer repair.

Some 15 years ago, when my son went to Kindergarten, the father of another kid was a pilot. One day we discussed a recent plane crash and he said something, that basically explained it. When something hits the fan, you need to have pilot using the reflexes, that come from years of flying planes. The increased use of computers make that impossible - and that is a major problem. So here, Trump, and Maher, were right.

@Kelli Barnhouse I mean, I definitely agree that sometimes having a manual option is better, but like the first reply said, you're leaving a lot of grey area with sweeping statements like "new technology is bad!" You realize VHS tape incorporated new technology for its time? I'm sure technophobes back then said "VHS is needlessly complicated! Simple 8mm film is better!" And when film was new, "Film is needlessly complicated! Still images only!" We can do this ad nauseam until we regress to projecting shadow puppets on cave walls. My point is, everybody is nostalgic for the simpler past. And when the children of today grow up, they'll be nostalgic for the simple technologies of 2019 that some current adults deem "needlessly complicated."

@@danielbaqueiro7245 Then why not have a pedal (foot lever) operated tap as well? It is only running as long as you step on it. And it could a seesaw-like pedal who's ends are cold and hot water while the degrees of mild are in between. Completely mechanical, no hands required. There are examples of it actually. And while you CAN leave the regular one on and leave (so water is wasted) the leg operated one would turn off as you leave with no extra sensors needed - working the same way as electronic sensors but way simpler and energy efficient. In broader picture, this shit comes from the western consumer culture - the shit that culture invents to be sold is simply baffling sometimes. You won't see that shit coming from, let us say, Russia (just an example of an eastern engineering mind - now mostly dead due to ever growing allure of capitalism and money making). They make ugly things, simple things, but things that work and last. That is why their economy finally failed in 1980's. For each of their cheap products that work the basic function it is designed for and lasts for, let us say, 10 years, a US company would sell an overengineered, nice looking product for much higher price and you'd need a new one every 2 years because it breaks down. In the end, you have a company that makes orders of magnitude more cash out of people while, basically, providing the same service. That is how China managed to get out of the gutter - shitloads of pointless cheap crap that was practically a single-use. For a company, that is great! But for people and environment, it is a disaster. But capitalism does not care about people or the environment, it cares about the bottom line at the end of the quarter so... get used to endless sea of pointless, overengineered crap that does not work and/or breaks down easily.

Dude, that shit with the over-engineering is hilarious. And the car industry is so guilty of this, it's unbelievable. Spot on there. When they started to figure out how to make everything in your car be controlled by electronic buttons instead of mechanical means (remember actually having to crank the window down?) they had to implement secondary computer processing modules. The car needs one of them already because the motors have also gone from being purely mechanical to being these control-freak, fine-tuned things that need constant monitoring. It's a problem of twisting the concept of what a "car" is into whatever they are able to sell. You can't just have one Model T for everyone, you have to have the two-seater racing engine, the family mini van, pickup truck AND the city hopper. It used to be that you only had to apply electricity to fire the cylinders in the motor, but now you've got to specialize and tarry out engines that are built in funny ways so they can fit into cars that are built to be city-slick, and gas-mileage-efficient. Not practical. Oh, you want a sporty sort of gear feeling, but you're too cheap to actually buy the thing? Let's add it as a software "mode" that'll give you slightly enhanced acceleration. So even the basement-priced "sporty" cars that us peasants can afford are able to give you the feeling of that Lamborghini you always see on TV. And you know what? Some idiots in the early 00s had the bright idea to save some money on most car models, and to combine the computer module that handles all of your necessary car electricity with the module that deals with all the new added-features luxury items, like electronic car keys, electronic windows, the AC, the speed-o-meter, the electronically adjustable side mirrors, etc. Needless to say, it was a disaster. A lot of cars had to be recalled, and I remember Audi the most clearly, because their new PC boxes had the issue of running twice the wattage through a computer package that was still the same size. They didn't change the layout of the car at all, they just tried to put all the electronics into the little box under your dashboard that was originally designed to be THIS big, and not an inch more. False connections happened. Audis started malfunction, but there are plenty of other examples. I just remember clearly that my dad came home one day and told us that he had locked the car with the remote key, and it sat there for, like, 2 minutes after the beeping had confirmed it was indeed locked. And then it rolled down all of the windows. Fucking perfect.

Self lacing shoes will be awesome for athletic people. Shoe laces suck in the heat of a workout or a game. When you’re in the moment, you want a tight, firm fit. When you’re at rest, you want to loosen that a bit to relax, bring your heart rate down, and let your body recover before going back at it. Just because something might potentially be useful for one group of people, it doesn’t mean it is for everyone. There is a reason Nike doesn’t sell these things at Walmart. They are a niche product for a niche group. In the case of their first release, basketball players. Future releases will probably be targeted towards Crossfit and Functional Training and other areas where people are pushing for peak performance.

i absolutely agree on the stupidity of “improvement “ for the sake of changing something without adding value to the experience, just because “hi tech” it’s good, it really infuriates me when i come face to face with a piece of engineering stupidity. For the case of the 737 Max8 MCAS malfunctions instead, Trump got it totally wrong again, this was not an unnecessary improvement or complication for the sake of hi tech, the MCAS system was introduced to help pilots fly a new version of the 737 that had become more “unstable” after installing heavier and more powerful engines that shifted the center of mass. Fly by wire has been in use since the F 16 and all Airbus planes started flying and has helped relieve pilot fatigue preventing accidents and saving fuel, apparently the grave mistake here was the reliance on a single sensor and the poor training for the pilots, plus the poor response of FAA and Boeing to previous reports of such failures, let’s wait for the investigation results and let’s listen to pilots and experts opinions instead of talking of going back to “good old time” of which we know nothing.

Question (not trolling; I'm asking because I truly want to understand) - why were heavier and more powerful engines installed in the first place. Speed? And if they caused the plane to go significantly faster cutting travel time (did they?), why wasn't plane's structure revised to accommodate the change in the center of mass?

@Democlis
@Democlis 5 жыл бұрын
@@zeewann Not everything is made for more speed, in this case the new engines are vastly more efficient, allowing it to actually reduce fuel consumption and increase carry capacity (although part of that increase will be spent moving the engines themselves). These are the two major factors you take into consideration when buying a new plane for an airline, the vast majority of expenses they have is with fuel and maintenance, so if they can reduce the fuel consumption and increase carry weight (allowing for transport off more things/people) they can increase their profits by quite a bit. Speed is no longer a factor in plane design, we reached a point where the cruise speed reached by the planes have the best cost/benefit possible and trying to increase speed only makes things too expensive and not worth it, just see the failure of the Concord, it was so expensive despite making trips twice as fast, due to the large amounts of fuel and reduced carrying capacity, that using them would just bankrupt the companies.

@@ender003 Video games(as long as the driver can´t play them) don´t really interfere with functionality. Generally, adding new independent features isn´t a problem. The problem starts when new features that are not properly tested yet become mandatory for the basic functions of the machine, like the sensor TheBrother wrote about. Personally, I would say that having an electric car instead of a petrol car is a big enough useful innovation for me to forgive most of these glitches. Having said that, I hate these things as well. Why the fuck do I need a sensor to check if my door is ajar? Can´t I just check it myself? And even if the sensor makes sense, why the fuck can´t I start the car anyway? What if I need to get away quickly and don´t have the time to close the door? Why does everyone need a reminder that their kid is still in the back seat? I could list a thousand other features.

Making things better electronically: I've been in the appliance repair business for almost 40 years. My own washer & dryer are old~25-30 years old. They have analog timers, the kind you turn and they click. I can turn the washer to "spn" and it spins. I do NOT have to wait for it to decide to maybe drain and then spin~~MAYBE. You can move them to do exactly what you want them to do. Then there are the electronic controls from hell. They are DESIGNED TO FAIL. In some of these P'sOS, you cannot get them to do exactly what you want. Then there are the ranges and refrigerators with a read out for "fault codes". They say F1, F2 and/or etc. I always tell my customers to wait a minute or two and it will say FU~2.

Lord Nanfoodle I was trying to wash my hands in a supermarket restroom just a week or so ago; there I was, waving my hands under the faucet and could never get any water to come out but with every wave the soap dispenser kept squirting soap on the back of my right hand in the sink!😐🤷‍♂️ I finally gave up trying to get any water to come out, so I dispensed a paper towel, wiped all that soap off the back of my right hand and left. It was crazy; I kept wondering if it was a joke and whether someone was laughing their butt off watching the whole thing on hidden camera.🤦‍♂️

Bill did praise tech that analysis your pee but a toilet that puts you in the mood?! And he's also right about how it's hard to wash your face on those automated faucets. And why is that even needed when you're in a hotel room. That's useful in a high traffic area, but in a hotel room? I do some UX design work and it's mostly about common sense. Not all technology is perfect or meant to be. After all, they're all made by humans who last I checked, also make mistakes.
