We had one of the "neatest" civil wars in history -- nice neat border line, nice neat battles with guys nice enough to wear one of two uniforms. Only in a few places like Missouri and Kansas did the sh** get weird. So yeah, a typical civil war is where everyone's on top of one another -- or regional in very fine-grained way -- and the killing and destruction (and did I say killing?) is happening all around you. England's civil war was a bit like that -- and I maintain you can still see the collective PTSD almost 500 years later.

True. In Spanish Civil War almost more people died executed behind the lines rather than in battle. Families tear each other apart, and in many places the battle were regional: there wasn't a frontline, but two sides fighting for the same region until one would triumph and purge the other side, so they could join the general frontline. You could see a milita band coming to a village, they asked the locals about known leaders or sympathisers of the other side, so they could go to their houses, drag them out and shot them. Most of the time, they took them to walk around the village, so everybody would know what happens to the other side ("el paseíllo"). A Nationalist general accused all the reds of being homosexual, and encourage his troops to rape every woman to show them how manly the Nationalists were. Civil wars are fucking hell. I would prefer to lose a war against a foreign enemy than win it against my own.
