A few years ago I mocked the local Walmart Stores because many of them had a "Fine Jewelry" department. I wondered if anyone would really buy things like expensive wedding rings or other "fine" items at Walmart. But, to be honest, it was nice to know that there was a portion of the store dedicated to jewelry and watches, even if I didn't expect those products to be high-end.
I found a lot of interesting deals at Walmart stores, especially when they might offer extreme closeout discounts on watches that had spent too much time in the display cases. Where else could you find a Casio Duro watch for under $15 or a G-Shock discounted from $99 to half that price... or less?
In recent years, however, the local Walmart stores near me have eliminated their jewelry departments and now they just have a small "Accessories" area. They generally don't carry any G-Shock watches nor any other Casios that cost more than $35. They also carry watches from unknown brands like "George" or "Time and Tru". And, just this week, I discovered that the inexpensive Casios they carry have either been locked inside glass cases or they have had large, plastic security tags attached to them.
It just makes me sad. I used to have fun browsing the inventory of Casios at Walmart stores. Sometimes I'd find great deals and enjoy a nice impulse purchase. It seems those fun days may be gone forever. I don't know when I'll find another place where I can check out G-Shocks and other Casios in person before buying them.
