I think its absolutely possible to play competitive with not much money. You just need to spend it right. i pay about 10-20 on the game monthly and do big purchases of crowns every 3-6 months.

I think you are correct, but you definitely need to have a really good grasp of all the game systems. If you make any significant research mistakes, you can really bottleneck yourself. I misapplied 5 points this world expecting to have to abuse buying RPs with gold, but then my military build worked out better than expected and I had a surplus of honor. Even those 5 points in Philo would be extremely helpful right now, it always feels as if I'm 5-10 points away from critical research. Having said all that, I've never played another game where theoretically a single player could beat the entire server if given unlimited funds. There's really no cap to how much power you can buy if you want.
