@@ZekeMagnar it's not just the charging (I use a lot of electronic stuff and tools with Li ion batteries), but it's also the trouble shooting in the case of a problem. Mechanical derailleurs can be maintained at home, you can adjust everything and if it don't work properly you can find out why. If a wireless groupset don't work any more you can't even do measurements with a multimeter, you can just replace parts to find out which part is broken. Non disc was $2000cdn. looking at msrp group prices (not online discounts) you are probably at $4000cdn just to get the di2 part on the same bike. So yeah, not far from double the price. In reality they will kinda mask this all by not putting it on aluminium frames at all. This is partly cause of the new di2 upgrade pricing, and partly cause of the new reality of bike pricing overall. You can expect non di2 105 (if there is one) is going to be several hundred more than the old r7020. It is a bad time to buy a bike really, if you are looking for good value.

I’ve definitely noticed a restructuring in the past 4/5 years in the cycling industry in regards to how they organise the hierarchy relative to price. A bike with Dura Ace Di2 used to come on bikes under £4000; Ultegra Di2 could be had on bikes under £2000. Both perfectly possible just a few years ago. Not now though: Dura Ace Di2 is reserved to justify the £10,000 bike boom, and Ultegra Di2 is seen on £8000 bikes. This, despite Di2 now being cheaper to manufacture and the fact Shimano must have long since recouped all the R&D costs over the course of previous iterations. There is no excuse whatsoever for the entirely arbitrary price hikes. At my local club there are guys, on low wage incomes, riding around on 10k bikes that they’ll never average a ride over 18mph on. Which is to say that the industry’s unscrupulous marketing and clever confirmation bias science is very potent stuff indeed. The industry has waged war against consumers and won. Push bikes are now priced in line with motorbikes. “Hello Sir, how can I help you….”would that be the Ducati Panigale or the Specialized S-Works you’d like for your £16,500?”…. It’s that ridiculous. The markups are an affront to the cycling community. Their practices are up there with Pfizer’s unethical hoodwinkery. £20k bikes will be next, you watch…

The sticker price was 2k *more* than a brand new 1000cc motorbike cost me in 2005, and 20x what my previous car was deemed worth as a trade in 😂😂😂 Now, I held my nose and bought - because the cycle to work brought the price down to less than 1/3rd of sticker price in terms of the loss of net income. Basically - I could end up with £2500 out of £7500 gross earnings, or have a £7500 bike. Sod it then - I'll have the bike. But would I pay the full price? 😂 You must be joking. So I've read Cycling Tips article on the release of 105 Di2 and watched the Bike Radar and GCN videos as well. First of all, I like how Shimano has presumably put everyone that runs 105 into a group that 1. Does Not race. 2. Doesn't do mechanical tinkering/maintenance. 3. Never had a bike before. The second issue is the fact that 105 was supposedly the affordable option. For around $1800 (US) that has been circulating around; you could have a Campagnolo Chorus, which is substantially lighter and much more customizable in terms of features. Again, the price of an entry level groupset from Shimano is now higher than a mid to high level Campagnolo groupset. Let that sink in!! At the same time, 105 doesn't offer the variety that it's suppose to offer. By grouping everyone who runs a 105 to a non-racer, mechanically inept, not bothered with weight, and generally clueless cyclist, Shimano has effectively boxed them into a corner. You want more options, pay for Ultegra; otherwise. shut up and ride this. It used to be that you would get options in this marketplace. With this new 105 you have exactly two options, get the 11-34 or 11-36 and no you can't have 11-28. Since, they don't race; they won't mind 400g to 700g weight penalty either (comparing to the Chorus). Then they think hey, may be we should have a 52-36 for those people who definitely don't race. All in all, this is a disappointment all around! Expensive, not enough variety in gearing options, no mechanical option, no rim brake option, and missing many of the features of Ultegra but Di2.
@marcvb33642 жыл бұрын
Fully agree with all you say. Most people I know that run 105, do so because of the unreasonable price bump to Ultegra, not because they're not competitive, don't race or don't care about weight. Guess Shimano is simply becoming a less attractive option for a lot of people now.
@fukawitribe2 жыл бұрын
Re : gearing. If you want more options, can you not just use the Ultegra or 3rd party cassettes ? (or DuraAce, although that seems perverse). The ability to microtune the rear mech per cog is brilliant. I have never used Di2 but I was apprehensive about the small switches on the shifters, particularly when wearing gloves. I actually have grown to love the SRAM shift logic. Right shifter = Upshift, left shifter = downshift, both = front mech. I also can see which cog I'm in on my Wahoo Bolt. I’ve worked as a professional mechanic for bike shops and race teams, and I can promise you that Di2 is far less maintenance than mechanical.

I have the mechanical 105 on my base model Canyon Aeroad, and I have no idea why you’d ever need a “nicer” groupset. It shifts perfect every time, feels smooth and has never failed me. Maybe the weight, if you are racing, would be a reason. But to me it’s more than enough.
@a1white2 жыл бұрын
Expect, in order to keep costs down, bike manufacturers moving to spec bikes up with lower end groupsets. When the new 11 speed Tiagra comes out that will likely be at least as expensive as the old 105.

I’ve always gone for 105 and dreamed of Ulteg and scoffed at Durace, but then bought a Ultegra RX derailleur, nearly bought the Durace last gen cranks. Feel like the dragon just showed up and asked, “what are you chasing.” But here’s the thing, I’m riding all steel, 1x cabled, rim brake, nearly rando set ups and can’t picture buying a whole groupset. Not enough tinker time. All said, when I bought a Giant 2 full 105 in 2001 (the Once team look a like) I was levitating for two years on those weekday 50m rides and beating those older gentlemen who could afford a car AND a bike AND the fancy parts. It feels bad ass to ride 105, still, nuff said.

The mechanical has better shifting ergonomics. It's a lot easier to differentiate up and down inputs when wearing thick gloves. You can shift down 3 gears in one motion when hitting a hill
@gcn2 жыл бұрын
Interesting point! The flip side of this is, when your hands are tired or cold DI2 is easier to shift 👀

A tip for those who miss the additional switches on the 105 Di for operating the bike computer. I only ride the 105 Di2 in S2 mode, why do I have this shifting system? The switches on the left lever are therefore more or less useless. I have therefore assigned them to the D-Fly channel and use them to operate my Edge 830 with 6 functions. It works perfectly, both hands are always on the handlebars and the view is more forwards.

My first road bike was with 105 and rim brakes (still miss that Caad 8), I paid about half the price of the new 105 groupset for for that entire bike. Fair enough, it was 8 years ago, but still..

I'm sticking with my Dura Ace 7800... flawless and bombproof... and will still be working perfectly in 5 yrs when the new 105 Di2 starts falling apart.

Well at the moment I can get SRAM AXS 1x groupset for under £1200 and a 2x groupset for under £1400 (that includes pretty much everything like crank/cassette). AXS has the 10 tooth cog (an advantage for 1x setups) and a much easier setup, not really seeing much of a reason to go 105 Di2 at the kind of prices some are saying.

Out of context 3kg is a lot but 361g more than Ultegra isn't a huge amount

@@gcn but ~500 grams more than the r7000 11 speed one is a substantial weight los. Especially when you pay more than 2 EUR/gram lost. A r7000 will cost you around ~500 EUR. Imagine how many Latex innertubes that is, or beers, or hours spent on the bike instead work. And you’ll be less aero because of the disc brakes. Hard core for one more sprocket and electronic shifting, especially since r7000 has such good shifting qualities.

When smartphones exist it's hard to understand the crazy pricing of electronic bike gears. Seems somewhat low tech in the grand scheme but priced higher than a Macbook.

Yeap that's what I've said and why are things not cross compatible use a better processing unit with upgradeability in mind and I don't see why gear can't be future proof (I'd programmable indexing distances to allow equipment to go from 11 to 12 speed as long as the limits are okay).

Hi, GCN, maybe just a small remark. Grams in weight, are usually marked with small "g" , not with capital "G" . Capital "G" is usually used with G-forces . :)

Even adjusting for inflation it's considerably more expensive than Ultegra Di2 was 5 years back, this ain't helping nobody go electronic, all it allows for is bumping the prices of Ultegra and Dura Ace even more.
@nickporter35312 жыл бұрын
“Affordable” is a relative term here. It is a lot more expensive than it used to be. Whilst electronic shifting is more efficient than cable there are a few other things here; batteries need replacement and have to be dealt with;!Di2 won’t work with all frames (unlike SRAM which is fully wireless and frame agnostic) meaning if you want this at the “affordable” group set then you may need a new frame; Repairing an electronic group set or replacement is expensive - and rather than unscrewing something and replacement of the dud part will result in throwing the part away and buying a new one. Yes, it’s nice to see BUT this is no longer the group set of the people and it further reduces choice, repairability and potentially forces change to systems that you don’t want or need if you are not mechanically minded.
